Eleven Years

This afternoon Chris, me, and the Bean were out running some errands and somehow we magically ended up at Target.   I don’t know how it happened.   I guess what’s meant to be will be.

Anyway, we parked in a parking garage under the store since it was raining and we rode the elevator up.   In the elevator, there was a woman and her young son with us.   She very politely commented how sweet and cute the Bean looked sleeping in his stroller.   I laughed and said something like, “Yeah, they’re always cute when they’re sleeping…”   She laughed back and then put her hand affectionately on her son’s head.

“Just enjoy it all now – even the crying – because before you know it eleven years have gone by,” she said motioning to her son.

I smiled and we all got off the elevator when the doors opened.   As we walked into Mecca…I mean, Target…I glanced over at Chris who had this horrified look on his face.

“What’s wrong, sweetie?” I said, stopping the stroller.

He just stared at me.

“What is it, Chris?”

“We’re going to have him for ELEVEN YEARS!” he said.   “ELEVEN YEARS.   I don’t even know what eleven years looks like!   ELEVEN YEARS, KATIE!”

“Alright,” I said, trying to calm him down.

“ELEVEN YEAAAARS!” he yelled out.

“OKAY!” I said, grabbing his shirt and pushing him over to the side of the store.   “Yes, we are going to have Bean for eleven years.   Hey!   We might even have him for eighteen years!   We MIGHT even have him FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES!   Now get it together!”

“Okay, you’re right,” he said, coming out of his haze.   “Alright.   I’m better.”

“Good,” I said.   “Now let’s head over to the Baby section.”

“ELEVEN YEARS!!!!!!!”

And that’s when I knocked Chris out and shoved hm in the bottom of my stroller and continued shopping for teething rings.

THE END.

And to think when I opened this post I thought it was going to be about how you and Chris had been together for 11 years! My husband and I will have been together (dating, engaged, married) for 12 years on Christmas! It’s funny that Chris reacted that way. Good thing kids change a lot–it never gets boring!

I was one who would sort of roll my eyes when people would give me those “treasure these times….” speeches. But, let me tell ‘ya, my two boys are now 9 and 5 – and it TRULY feels like just yesterday that they were babies snuggled up in my bed just like your Bean is! We want them to grow up and do new things so badly…..that sometimes we forget to savor what they are doing now!

    Ha Ha Ha!! So cute.
It does seem like 11 years is a long time, let alone 18 years…if thats when they decide to fly on their own. But from a mother that has two in college, it does go by VERY FAST. One day you are buying diapers, the next month sending them off to college. Only hoping and praying they don’t do what you did in college! Right Chris!?!?! 😉

And then you turn around and Beanie will be 16 and driving or 26 and having a baby of his own. It all goes by so quickly, but it’s very cool watching your kids grow up. I’m sure he’ll make you proud.

A few weekends ago, Aaron and I were in NY for a wedding. I was in the wedding party and Aaron attended the rehearsal at the church with me. On our way to the rehearsal dinner, Aaron said, “I got all teary eyed in the church.” And I thought it was because he was thinking how we were just married 3 years ago and that he was so moved by thinking about how much he loved me that it brought him to tears of joy. But no. I asked him why he got all emotional he said, “Someday Porter is going to get married.” And then I freakin’ lost it–“How can you think about that NOW?! He’s not even 6 months old yet! Don’t make him grow up so fast–I can’t take it!” And then I was crying to. Stupid emotions…
