Conversations with Bean and Gracie,  Parenting

Next Stop: Steak

“Hey, Beanie,” I said.

“Yeah, Mom?”

“Tonight we’re going to have something a little different for dinner.”

“You mean, no bottle?” he asked as he got a little nervous.

“I really love my bottle, Moooom,” Beanie whined.

“I know, Bean,” I said.   “I just mean we’re going to add a little something to your dinner.”

“I don’t think so, Mom,” Beanie wimpered.   “I really don’t like change.”

“Here, Beanie,” I said.   “Try this cereal.”

“Oh my gosh, Mom!” yelled Beanie.   “This stuff is weird!”

“Well, wait a minute…” he said.

“I mean, its not that bad…I guess I could eat this….”

“Oh, good!” I said.   “Then let’s try another bite.”

“I don’t know, Mom.   This stuff just tastes…funny,” he said.

“Funny?” I said.   “Like it tastes like it tells a good joke?”

“Oh, Mom…” said Beanie.   “You’re so silly.”

“Alright, Beanie.   Let’s try another bite,” I said.

“Wait a minute,” said Beanie.   “How much of this stuff do I have to eat?”

“A small little bowl,” I said.

“How often?”

“Every night and then in a few weeks we’ll add a morning bowl, too,” I said.

“WHAT?!?!” Beanie shouted.   “I don’t want to eat this stuff all the time!   It tastes like paper!”

“Its okay, Beanie,” I said.   “Calm down!”

“I DON’T WANNA EAT THE PAPER!   I DON’T WANNA!   I DON’T WANNA!” yelled Beanie.

“Alright, alright, alright…” I said.   “Maybe we can put this on hold for a couple weeks and we’ll try again later.   Okay, Beanie?”

“Yeah,” Beanie sniffled.   “Lets try again later, Mom.”

“Okay, Beanie.”

“Can I just have my bottle now, Mom?”

“Sure, Buddy.”

I know you didn’t ask for any advice, but rice cereal can definitely contribute to constipation, and given Beanie’s recent experience I imagine you would want to avoid that. Those first feedings are so fun to watch (and photograph) but it’s not a bad idea to wait till 6 months when his digestive system is more mature. If he seems hungry, you can always give him bigger bottles.

Did you get him sleeping regularly again?

Actually, these pictures are from a couple weeks ago. And we stopped the rice cereal because Bean didn’t like it, but also because our doc told us just what you said! She said to lay off until he gets regular. We’ll try again in a month or so…

Weebs didn’t do so well with the spoon at first so we do as much with a spoon as he will take and then throw the rest in a fast flow bottle and he gets after it. Also, we give him banana flavored rice cereal and he never makes a face at that! I just cant imagine eating that stuff. Yucka.

Its thinning out. And he has bald patches. And Chris tried to cut his hair. And I’m doing a blog post on it soon. Bean is having hair issues.

my son had great hair when he was born and now it is thinning out as well:( On top of that, we need to have an Indian ceremony that will SHAVE HIS HEAD. I am quite vocal in my opposition to this, so my mom said we can just trim it a lot, as a compromise.

I hear it grows back thicker after it all falls out!

My little one never really dug the rice cereal so we just started trying veggies and she scarfed them up. Good Luck! I love all the pictures, he is such a cutie.

When you’re ready to try cereal again, instead of using formula or water to make the cereal, try using fruit juice or fruit baby food. That’s what worked well for us, anyways.

  • Nate's Mom

Hey, Beanie! It’s me, Nate! I LOVE THE PAPER CEREAL! It’s so papery!!! My mom said that, next up, is ORANGE PAPER! Something called Sweet Po-tae-toes. Apparently, I’m allowed to make a mess with the Sweet Po-tae-toes because I’m damn cute. Bean. I bet your mom will let you make a mess too. Can’t wait to compare messes. Your pal, Nate.
