Hair, There, and Everywhere

Beanie is having some issues lately.   He’s got a sinus infection, an upper respiratory infection, he’s teething, and he’s on Week Three of not sleeping through the night.   But more important than any of that nonsense, his hair is having some problems.

Travel with me for a moment back through the Land of Bean’s Hair.   Its a magical, mythical place.   I didn’t even know babies could have hair like this kid.

When Bean was born, I didn’t really get to see him right away because I had a c-section.   By the time he made his way over to me in the operating room, they had already shoved him in one of those little hospital caps to keep the heat in.   It wasn’t until a couple hours later when we finally made it to our private hospital room that I thought to pull the hat off and see what was under there.

Holy moly.

From then on, I refused to put him in a hat.   Hair like that should roam free.   By the time he was a few weeks old, we started to have fun with those luscious locks.

But lately, the hair has been going through some changes.   Its starting to thin out a bit.   In fact, underneath that top layer of long hair, Bean is completely bald.   He’s like a reverse bald man.

Can you see the bald patches under there?

And as if those weren’t weird looking enough, the back of Bean’s head is fuzzy.   Like a duck.   He looks like a completely different person from behind.   Thick, luscious hair in the front.   Fuzzy, furry hair in the back.   He kind of looks like Kate Gosselin.

He’s also balding in the back from where he lays.   I keep trying to explain to him about rotating which side of his head he lays on, but he doesn’t seem to care.   Secretly, I think he’s hoping to go completely bald so that he can be a biker.   I think he likes the leather.

And as if all of that doesn’t complicate his styling enough, he’s got his dad’s cowlicks.   The kid looks like some cow has been sucking on his head for days.   Poor dude.

For the last two weeks, Chris and I have been saying that maybe its time for Beanie to get a haircut.   Maybe this situation calls for some professional help.   I was hesitant at first.   He’s only four months old.   Wasn’t he too little for a haircut?   But Chris convinced me that it was the right thing to do.

So, I agreed to the haircut.   And that’s when Chris bamboozled me.

(I have always wanted to use the word “bamboozled” in a sentence!)

HE wanted to cut Bean’s hair.   Beanie was too little to go to a salon.   And Chris didn’t trust anyone else with scissors around him.   For a week, it was all Chris talked about.   “I can cut his hair.”   “Just let me cut his hair.”   “Bean, can I cut your hair?”

Finally, I gave in and one day last week Chris cut Beanie’s hair.

He really didn’t take that much off.   How much damage could have been done?   At first, with Bean’s hair still wet, he looked pretty darn cute.   Like Opie from The Andy Griffith Show.   Or like Chris.   Or Chris’ dad.   Or Chris’ granddad.

But when the hair dried…   Well…   It wasn’t good.   The front hair was really choppy.   And the back stuck straight up.

Bean was pissed.

We changed his diaper right after this picture, Whitney.   Don’t worry.

The worst part is that Chris refuses to admit that there’s anything wrong.   In his eyes, he’s a fantastic barber.   And under normal conditions, with normal hair, I’m sure Chris could have a stellar career as a barber.   But he’s not so great with the baby hair/fuzz/mullet.

This weekend, I think I’m going to take him up to my hair girl and see if she can clean up Beanie’s look a little.   Until then though, Bean is refusing to take off his winter hat.

How precious!! I LOVE all of that hair 🙂 It’s so crazy to look back at that first picture and see how much he has already changed!!

I was busying “awwing” over how cute his hair cut was while wet. . .so sweet and opie like indeed. . .only to bust up laughing at it dry. . .suddenly it’s like a bad toupe! (and I probably didn’t spell that right) You still have the sweetest face ever Beanie!

Reading this made me laugh so HARD for like 10 minutes. My stomache still hurts. During my laughing attack all I could I kept saying was “make it stop…make it stop”…but I couldn’t stop because all I could picture was little Beanie with Kate Gosslin hair.

    Omg.So.Hilarious.

    WAY. TOO. FUNNY.
Bless Beanie’s heart. He does have hair issues!
But, maybe it will come back thicker than before! What then will you do with ALL THAT HAIR!?! Can’t wait to see how you guys can style it then!
It’s amazing how much he has changed in 4 short months.
    I’ll say it again, he’s adorable! 🙂

It’s normal. My daugther too, had the back of her head bald at his age. It’ll grow back couple of months later, you dun need to do anything about it. Love all the hair pics.

He looks like a prep student with the hair cut Chris gave him 🙂

I had about three times more hair than Bean when I was born – I had a full head of thick, jet-black hair, so Beanie is in good company!

OMG!!! That’s the funniest thing I’ve read in a while (since the cupcake post of course). I loved his ‘freshly cut hair’ picture. What a sweetie! I kept saying that my little guy looked like a cancer patient when he was losing his hair like that. It came out in patches.

Someday it’ll all grow in…until then….take lots of pictures!! 🙂

Porter was born with hair, but not nearly as much as Bean has. But by 4 months old, P went totally bald. Our daycare provider thought he looked like Charlie Brown with is perfectly round bald head. Last month, though, it started to fill in again and it looks like he will have quite a head of hair by Christmas.

    God, babies are so weird…

I have referred to our 5 1/2 month old’s hair as “Kate Gosselin hair” too–he has a kind of combover in the front and the back was sticking straight up for quite a while. He was bald/fuzzy in the back too, but it’s growing back in now that he’s on his tummy more. Once they can sit up, it really grows back in!
