Welcome to the Fam

This past Sunday morning, we had Beanie baptized at our hometown church where Chris and I grew up and were married.   I, of course, cried like a baby and Bean – who is the actual baby, in case you forgot – took it like a champ.   I couldn’t help the tears though.   If you are of the same faith as me, then you understand the importance and significance of that morning.   Beanie was welcomed into Christ’s family and to me there is nothing sweeter or more profound.

And, while certainly not equally important but still pretty high on the scale of important events, I am happy to report that Bean’s hair did not deflate when they poured water on it.   And, lets face it, that is just one more shining example of God’s presence in his life cause the dude has some fluffy hair.

My hair, however, did not fare so well.   The minute my hair hits humidity of any kind, I remember why we moved 1,000 miles away from Florida.

None of our family got pictures of the actual baptism because they were boo-hooing, too.   But right after The Dunk, the minister took Bean and walked him down the aisle of the church to introduce him to the congregation.   There are no pictures of this part either as the entire family quickly went from being moved to tears to be too terrified to move.

Was Bean going to scream?

No way, man!   Little Dude cooed and giggled and looked out over the congregation as if he were the Pope looking down on St. Peter’s Square.   (Though we aren’t Catholic, so I’m not sure how he learned to wave like that…)   It was a beautiful morning, both inside and out.

And as is the tradition in the South, we followed the beautiful morning both inside and out with food.   Lots of food.   Chris’ grandmother hosted a huge brunch at her house for his whole family and my family.

Halfway through the brunch, Beanie decided that dedicating his little bitty heart to the Lord and eating cheese biscuits was just too much excitement and he fell asleep right on my shoulder.   So, I toted him around the brunch for a little bit while he snoozed and about 30 minutes later, he popped his head up, eyes wide open, and smiling like crazy.   Apparently, he just needed a little cat nap and then he was ready to go again.

Sunday was a great day.   It was a day of fluffy hair and food.   It was a day of faith and forgiveness through Christ.   But it was also a day about family.   Families of all kinds – big and small, blood and chosen, those who are close and those who are not – play an important role in our lives.   They teach us through their examples and they nurture us through their love.

Beanie came into mine and Chris’ lives and made us a family.   And to now see him as part of our larger family and as part of my Christian family…well, its just more than any mother could ask for.
