Fourth of July on the Seventh

We celebrated the Fourth of July at my parent’s house with my sister, Ginny, and her hubby, John Michael.

John Michael is close to seven feet tall, so I worried that when Bean got on his shoulders the air would be too thin up there for him to breathe.  Glad to find I was wrong about that.

We had a tiresome day on the Fourth and so Beanie was headed to bed before the real fireworks started, but before we put him down for the night we had a mini-fireworks show just for him with sparklers.

Bean loved the sparklers.  Loved ’em.  Loved ’em so much, in fact, that I have now hidden anything flammable in our house just in case he gets any ideas.  Although, with Bean’s gas situation, he is probably the most flammable thing we have…

And what’s the Fourth of July without me singeing my hair with a sparkler?  It’s an annual event in my family.

But even that couldn’t damper Bean’s fun.  He thought the Fourth of July was awesome.  And I fear he will now take after his father and become one of those kids who likes to set G.I. Joe’s on fire just to see what happens.

He just has that little glint in his eye, don’t you think?

I have a friend who seems to set her hair on fire every time she’s around a candle. At least your hair singeing is only once a year…right? Bean looks like he had a wonderful time! Cuteness!

I was thinking wow Bean is SO big..and then I saw him on John Michael’s sholders..and he looks like a teeny Bean! So glad he enjoyed the holiday 🙂

Your sister is adorable! And I love that you used real sparklers. Seriously, some people have found these “safer wooden sparklers” which don’t get as hot or burn as fast. What a bunch of junk that is. The 4th just wouldn’t be the same without those hot, metal, smelly, real sparklers! I’ve definitely singed my hair too. Don’t feel bad 🙂

Great pics Katie! These are the kind of family pics I wish I could take but never manage to be able to. With a little one on the way I am REALLY feeling the need for a great camera so that I can start practicing taking great pics. I’ve done a little searching and (unless I’m COMPLETELY missing it) I can’t find where you mention the kind of camera you use.

Do you mind sharing what kind of camera you use and how you like it?

    Thanks!

Sorry, I’m blind. Just found the post about your Canon. I’m really pretty camera-dumb so I’m not sure I’ll ever get the hang of setting all the controls for every different situation. Do you feel like the Canon takes great pics even when you set it up as a point-and-shoot and let it do the work for you?

      • Katie

Yep – I used it primarily as a point-and-shoot and Chris does the manual settings. Both of us take really good, clear pictures with it.

Agreed about the necessity of real sparklers. We had them too.. it’s just not the 4th without them! Glad y’all had such a fun family celebration. =)

First off, Bean looked adorable with those sparklers. He certainly had that ‘glint of sudden realizaation of how cool fire is’ in his eye. Watch out for that one. Secondly, your post brought back somewhat traumatic memories for me of my first experience with sparklers. I was terrified of those things and my parents made me, and I do mean “made” me, play with those death sticks every year in some feeble attempt to rid me of my fears. All I remember is hot sparks landing on my feet. Good times. 🙂

Oh yes…the glint is there! Be careful…very careful! 🙂

I should have taken the sparkler only route with Q-Tip. She might have enjoyed it a little more. I decided to do a couple of small fountains and she didn’t like them at all…not a tiny little smidge. She had a death grip on her daddy and was shaking like a little leaf so we gave up and took her in for bath time.

And then I continued playing with the fire. lol…

Thankfully…no hair was burned in the popping of our firecrackers.

Too cute. I got to teach my two year old niece all about sparklers this year. Only, the sparkler wouldn’t light, I burnt my thumb trying and my niece? She was too busy yelling at my other sister to “go home! You have your own candy!”.

She was amused with the big fireworks as long as nobody tried to sit on her blanket with her.

I love that big smile on Bean’s face!! SOO CUTE! I would also like to say that John Michael is HOT. Good catch Ginny 🙂

Very cute 🙂 I always loved fireworks but my sister used to be very scared of the big bangs as we were growing up. I just loved the promise and the fizzy lights 🙂

Katie, I love reading your blog just for the fact that I am learning so much about babies and how they grow up! I am an only child so I never had the chance to learn a lot of what I am now learning from reading about Beanie’s experiences. My husband and I can hardly wait to have children and your blog is helping me realize just how much we have to look forward to!

  • Sara

Wow, that kid gets cuter every single day! I can’t believe how big he’s getting! Listen to me, I don’t even know him but feel like I do through this blog. Great pictures! Looks like a great weekend!
