Christmas Week, Part One

Well, Christmas has come and gone in the Brown household and it was the best one yet.  We spent Monday through Thursday at my parent’s house and then on Friday we headed down to our house so that Bean could have Christmas morning there.  My sister and her husband, John Michael, came down from Virginia and that might have been the best part of the whole week.  Since moving back to Florida, we’ve had our whole family together more often, but it makes us all miss my sister even more so it was really nice to be able to spend time with them.

We started the week off by doing a whole lotta nothin’. We sat on the couch and watched movies, we rode around in the golf cart, we ate more food than any human needs to in a lifetime. So by Thursday, we were ready to do something productive. With my sister venturing in to the Mary Kay industry, we decided to have our own Mary Kay party at my Grandmother’s so that she could practice her party throwing skills. And so that we could pamper ourselves while the guys played golf.

Of course, we kept the coolest guy with us. But apparently make overs and facials bored Bean because he napped most of the afternoon, which was just fine with me!

My Grandma had a beautiful lunch for us that was perfectly girly – quiche, fruit, and mimosas (made with sparkling grape juice and orange juice instead of champagne…really yummy!). After lunch, we sat ourselves down at her kitchen table and my sister started her demonstration.

We even got individual consultations on our skin type. We did microdermabrasion treatments and silky hand treatments and moisturized ourselves from head to toe.

Everything was going great and so professional until my sister referred to the lines around your eyes as “crow’s eyes,” instead of “crow’s feet.” And then we all got the giggles and it went downhill from there.

And even when we tried to get serious again so Ginny could finish her show, we laughed through the whole thing. My Grandma was the worst one! She couldn’t even get her make up on for laughing so hard.

I have to say, after months of feeling a little low and definitely not taking care of myself, it was good for my body and my spirit to spend that day with the ladies of my family. I laughed more than I had in a long time and by the time we left that afternoon, I looked bright eyed and refreshed, another thing that hasn’t happened in a long time. Some of that was the magic of Mary Kay, but most of that was the wonder of family. They really are the key to feeling better and it was the perfect way to kick start my Christmas season.
