What You Don’t Know

Because I’m high on muscle relaxers tonight, I thought I’d share some intimate secrets with you. Things that you may not know about me, no matter how long you’ve been reading my blog. Cracked out pregnant women like to get real.

1. I am scared to drive in rain.
2. I usually stop reading books about two chapters from the end. Once I know how it’s going to end, I stop reading.
3. I’ve had the same Bible since I was about 12 years old. I gave it to Chris when we were 18 and we went off to different colleges. I remember being so worried that I’d never see that Bible again because I was SURE we’d never make it through long distance dating at such a young age. And then when we got married years later and we were moving into our first apartment together, I came across my Bible as I unpacked one of Chris’s boxes of books. How divine.

4. I am a terrible cell phone user. I never hear it ringing. I forget it all the time. I leave it places. I drop it. I shouldn’t be allowed to own a cell phone.
5. I want to buy the dogs bark collars, but Chris won’t let me.
6. I collect etiquette books. I’ve always been fascinated by etiquette.

7. I can eat an entire jar of Classen’s pickles in one sitting. For real.
8. Over Christmas, my sister and Chris’s sister gave me all kinds of pampering goodies. I got a ton of Bath and Body Works products, face wash, lotions, make up – everything I need to feel good. I like to set it all up on my counter top so that I can pretend like I’m in a salon every morning.

9. I don’t keep my shoes organized in my closet. I wish I did. But I don’t.

10. I listen to Christian radio in the mornings on my way to work as my devotional time.
11. Once a year I convince myself that I can pull off a short, trendy haircut. I can’t. And every year I cry after I’ve cut off all my hair.
12. My Grandma gave me this make up set for Christmas. I’m not a big make up person, but I’ve been using almost the whole thing when I do my make up in the mornings. Purple eyeshadow makes me feel powerful.
13. I keep a stack of books by my bed that I want to read (or re-read) next. My pile keeps growing and growing, but I haven’t had time to read much lately. I miss it.

14. I’m so tired of my maternity clothes. I can’t wait to wear real clothes again.
15. Sometimes when I pee, I’m afraid the baby’s foot or hand is going to pop out and scare me.
16. I’m taking a class right now for my teaching certification.
17. I am really getting used to Florida and am starting to love it here. Especially considering the weather they’ve been getting in Connecticut this winter.
18. I bought the Walmart brand Swiss Cake Rolls at the grocery store this week. They taste like stale chocolate-covered popcorn for some reason. They’re gross. And yet, I eat them.
19. These muscle relaxers make me feel like Gumby.
20. It’s Girl Scout Cookie season and my third chin is VERY excited.

Today I am grateful for Gracie Girl’s strong, healthy kicks.

I love The Red Tent. That needs to be on my re-read list as well. I read it in high school for a book report and it immediately became a favorite.

Maybe you could do a quick post about what you think?

  • Margaret

Ha! Awesome list! Re: bark collars. Look into the Citronella variety! We didn’t want to use a real one on our dog, but the Citronella ones work in a similar way, they just spray a little citronella, which dogs don’t love. Our dog isn’t a barker, but he had an annoying habit of waking up at 4am and barking horrifically, even though he didn’t need anything. He was cured. Now we don’t even refill it, we just put the collar on if we start to notice he’s barking inappropriately and the problem is solved!

My brother-in-law is the Little Debbie guy… As in, he’s the guy who sells and stocks ALL the Little Debbies at every grocery store and Wal-Mart in our area. Interesting bit of trivia: Little Debbies are still good WEEKS after the “sell by” date. Because of that, I have stacks of “expired” Little Debbies at my disposal.

Other fun fact – my pants don’t fit.

  • Beth

So out of all this I saw The Red Tent! I love this book! If you want a recommendation on another read “A Lineage of Grace” by Francine Rivers. Just wonderful!
We did a bark collar, eh, if done right, they are great. and I only own 2 pairs of shoes – Birkenstocks and a pair of Doc Martens for when I am finally (if ever) forced to take the Birks off. and i live in PA

  • Deepa

Ah! I saw The Red Tent on your shelf and got so excitied! Love that book. I should reread it too… I too hate driving in the rain (hate. it.). My hair is not nearly as long as yours is but I do the same chop off around March and regret it every time…. 🙂

Hang in here! Two more months!

  • Lori @ I Can Grow People

I was never scared of driving in the rain until we moved to Florida. Something about the combination of heavy, tropical rain plus completely flat terrain and super high speeds on the highway–all of that made driving very scary for me! I’d rather drive in a snow storm any day!

  • kk

i am also not a phone person. My husband is constantly irritated why i can’t hear my phone and why i leave it all over the place. but i recently paid a really expensive price for losing my phone. booohooohooo

#7: Love Claussen’s pickles! Like, love. Seriously, I can’t buy another brand.

#10: Me too! I love Christian music on the radio. Well, the contemporary stuff, anyway.

#20: Will those Girl Scouts get here already? I feel like I ordered my cookies ten years ago.

  • Al

Love this post! I am an English teacher and have read Teach Like a Champion – it’s fantastic and will really give you some solid techniques for the classroom. Eat Pray Love is also one of my favorites, but the book is SOO much better than the movie 🙂 BTW – claussen’s pickles are THE BEST! Have a good weekend, darlin!

  • Elizabeth Kirk

I love this! I thought I was the only one who would love to organize the shoes in their closet, but just can’t.

I love samoas, so I don’t even order them because I have no will power around them. Thanks for writing this post under the influence!

  • Jen @ caved in

I have never read The Red Tent but after reading these comments I think I might have to pick it up. I was also ready to be out of my maternity clothes but now I’m in that evil in between stage where my maternity clothes are obviously too big but I can’t fit into my regular clothes yet. So I’ve been wearing super large yoga pants for 5 weeks. Awesome

  • Sarah

Hmmm….I love Swiss Rolls. I am glad I am not the only one. When I was pregnant, I acted like I could eat as many as I wanted because the calories did not “count.” 😉

  • Life of a Doctor's Wife

Love knowing this stuff about you! I do the same thing with books – I have a huge stack by my bed. Sometimes my husband comes by to thin it out and I get mad. How will I know what to read next?!?!

I also love etiquette. I have that one, the wedding one, and a business one. All fascinating!

The story about giving your bible away and having it come back to you made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. That’s such a sweet tribute to your love!

  • taralee

so i LOVE claussen pickles – we have a huge jar that we just got last week, and it’s nearly gone!

also – the red tent was an interesting book. i’m not sure i liked it, mostly because of how i viewed the story in Genesis after i read it.

  • Casey

Fun post, thanks for sharing! I listen to the Joy FM on my way to work in the mornings… I feel like it helps me start my day with my head in the right place.

  • Maggie

Thank you. Thank you so very much. You don’t know what the shoe picture has done for me. Recently I’ve become can convinced that certain areas of my life indicate that I have not yet become a real adult and these things must be remedied before I can do anything adult-like…like make a baby. My shoe storage situation is one of those things. The frequency in which I clean my refrigerator is another. But as you’ve shown, shoe organization obviously doesn’t affect your ability to raise children. Thank God.

  • erin

You should really prioritize reading Teach Like a Champion (or at least the videos). It seriously gave me teaching ideas I used the NEXT day!

  • Bonnie

I could eat an entire jar of Clausen’s in one sitting, too! I also tend to cut off all my hair once a year and hate it… And number 15 made me spew diet coke onto my monitor… 🙂

  • Amanda S.

This is the first time I’ve commented on your blog even though I read it almost every day. I had to because a) I have the same problem with my shoes and b) I have read Laura Bush’s book and I am a huge fan! Love her and love this blog! 🙂

  • Sommer

I’m halfway through the Laura Bush book. I borrowed it from my Grandma 🙂 It’s ok so far but I think it will get better as I get further in. So far I’m only up to age 6.

  • Sarah H.

I loved this! Have you read The Red Tent, or are you waiting to? I LOVE that book. One of a very few books I’ve read more than once. Religious fiction may be my favorite genre. I listen to the Christian Radio station whenever I’m in the car alone–it helps relieve stress, anxiety and to remember the important stuff! I’m glad you’re enjoying Fl. I bet 3/4 of your reader would be down there in a heart beat!

  • Kat @ Living Like the Kings

This is the funniest list. I mean not all of it is funny but I’m sitting on my couch cracking up while my husband eyes me suspiciously. BTW We bought our dogs the “humane” bark collars – they spray Citronella when they bark. They used to work really well but lately the dogs have learned when they have the collar on and when they don’t. That’s what we get for having a Yorkie. PPS- CT weather is just HORRRRRRIBLE. Can I move in with you? Peanut will have to come too. Husband and dogs are optional.

  • Angie

Funny funny funny! I am so glad we don’t have girl scout cookies in Australia otherwise my third chin would be very excited also, lol.

  • Julie

Ok I’ve never commented before, but I just had to laugh at your fear of the baby’s hand/foot popping out when you pee. My husband always jokes that our baby is going to do the same thing and maybe through the belly button haha. This is one of your best posts!

  • Ashley Harris

I’m cringing over your pile of shoes!! Ahhh!! I have 2 three-tier shoe racks and although I’m sometimes lazy and leave out the few pairs that I wear in a week, I’ll usually put them back in their proper place on the weekend.

And the visual image I’m getting from #15 is amazing!!! You crack me up.

  • Elise Anderson

I *love* The Red Tent. Such a beautiful vision of sisterhood, a look into what a woman’s world was possibly like millenia ago. I read it a week or two before spending several days with the women in my matrilineage, and I feel like it made me feel even more grateful for the women in my life.

  • Sharilyn

Okay, so I’ll be odd man out. Hated The Red Tent. Ridiculous take on the whole story as far as I am concerned. It was entertaining yes, but not plausible and sure painted all those women as big non God-fearers. Were the patriarchs really the ONLY ones who followed Jehovah? And none of the women did? And frankly, I really don’t enjoy thinking about menstruation that much!

  • Kathleen

Hi Katie! I read all the time but don’t comment often (this is Justin’s sister btw), but I love your blog and when I first started getting baby fever a year and a half ago, your blog was my fix, since we weren’t ready to have one yet. Your journey with little bean man has made me laugh and cry. A smart, funny, intelligent blog you write. I’m so happy to hear that you are settling into Florida!(when you wrote about CT’s winter I felt very jealous of you guys in FL, we’re in CT and this year has been BRUTAL) Hope to see you guys soon! Maybe we’ll have our little one by then too! I’m 4 months along! Send my love to bean and Chris!

  • Nikki

You had me giggling next to the Fiance, so of course he had to read the list. He was laughing so much! I’m glad your enjoying Florida’s weather! I usually get to brag about the weather being awesome this time of year living in Texas, but we actually got snow! We had a snow day in San Antonio. It was amazing!

  • makenna

Katie, read Teach Like a Champion when you get a chance! I’ve read parts of it, but it has some great classroom management tips that might help out with those unruly middle schoolers 🙂

  • Abigail

2 things: this post made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Also, I loved “The Red Tent” when I read it and hope you get the chance to start it soon!
