From the Mouth of Babes

A few weeks ago, I had a bug bite on my leg and Bean saw me scratching it.

“It’s a bug bite,” I told him.

Now, Bean thinks everything that itches is a bug. He’ll be rubbing his eye and announce, ” ‘s a bug.” Or, he’ll scratch his ear and complain, ” ‘s a bug, Mom.” Then, the other day, we were in Target (naturally…) and Bean was scratching his head and he yells out, “It’s bugs, Mom!” The women in the aisle where we were standing gave me this grossed out look and quickly walked away from the kid with bugs in his hair.

The other night in the bathtub, Gracie tooted and bubbles came up in the water. She sat there for a minute and then looked at me and giggled. Girlfriend is going to fit in just fine around our house…

Bean has become obsessed with boo-boo’s. He thinks he gets them all the time. What he is really after, though, are the Cars 2 Bandaids that he gets when he has a boo-boo. The other day we were at the splash park and Bean got into the box of Bandaids I carry in my diaper bag. He proceeded to put about 10 Bandaids all over his legs. Later that day, we were at the grocery store and he started peeling the Bandaids off his legs and offering them to people as they walked by us. Mortifying doesn’t even describe it. I need a new word to describe how embarrassing it is when your two-year-old son offers used Bandaids to strangers.

When Bean is using the potty, I sit Gracie in her Bumbo seat on the bathroom floor so she can hang with us (sometimes we’re in there a while…). This morning, Lucy walked into the bathroom and stood about a foot away from Gracie. Because Lucy is so short, she was just at Gracie’s sight line and it was the first time that Gracie got a good, long look at Lucy. What Gracie was really fascinated with was Lucy’s tail. It was wagging right in front of her. Suddenly, Gracie lunged forward and grabbed at it – and caught it! Lucy didn’t know what to do and neither did Gracie. She just sat there staring at Lucy, holding on to her tail, not sure what was going on. Finally, I had to pry her fat, little hands off so Lucy could be free.

In Lucy’s world, you get ONE freebe. That was Gracie’s. Next time, the gloves are off.

On Saturday when I took Bean and Gracie up to the festival at Chris’s work, I decided to make this our first outing in big boy underwear. Bean was super excited and I made a big deal about it, too. I was really worried about the car ride to the theater, which was a half hour drive. I kept telling Bean in the car not to go pee pee on Mr. Incredible and to wait until we got to Daddy’s office. When we parked at the theater, I was so proud of him for not having an accident and so I went on and on as we walked up to find Chris about what a big boy he was for having dry underwear. Bean got so swept up in all this underwear talking, that when he saw Chris, he yelled out, “DADDY! DRY UNDERWEAR!” and right there in the middle of the festival, he pulled his pants down to show Chris his dry underwear. I quickly pulled his pants up, but not that didn’t stop Bean from beaming with pride in his dry Mr. Incredible underwear.

    Hysterical!!
“and right there in the middle of the festival, he pulled his pants down to show Chris his dry underwear.”

Thank u for remembering all this and sharing. This is worth GOLD. GOLD!!

Too adorable…enjoy these moments while the kids are still young enough for it to be funny. The other day a 5th grade student I was talking with started telling the group about all of this embarrassing stuff her brother did. I said “it’s okay! Little kids do stuff like that sometimes because they’re still learning.” To which she responded…”He’s 13!!!” Yikes.

So funny! Now your job is to convince Bean that the bandaids from the dollar store are the bomb………then stock up. This phase can last awhile and nobody wants to go broke buying “good” bandaids 🙂

I can totally relate! My son pulled his pants down as soon as he got to daycare oneday to show his friends his new cars 2 jocks!
Little kids are so funny – certainly keeps life interesting 🙂

I’m crying I’m laughin so hard. Idk what’s funnier, Gracie tooting (am I the only one that still laughs at fart jokes at the ol’ age of 28?) or Bean showing daddy his dry underpants (it’s mostly funny bc it didn’t happen to me).

Too cute! Gracie seems to be a growing girl. Do you have her 4 mo. stats from her doctor’s appt? Just curious.
Thanks for being so faithful to your blog. I love reading it! Congrats on the move.

Hahaha! Kids are so hilarious! My nephew told my sister in law to look at his banjo, as he pointed to a scrape on his knee. It took her a little while to figure out that he had just learned the song “…with a banjo on my knee”. LOL

Love it! They are just so adorable. It amazes how much Bean has grown in what seems like such a short amount of time. Thanks for the great post!

I just snorted out loud, which means your stories are hilarious, and of course too cute!!!
I have to tell you a little story, when I was about three I asked my mum (at the top of my voice naturally) why the cashier (a lady) had a beard. About 16 times apparently. In fairness, she did have a very hairy upper lip, and I was being a right pain in the behind that day. Mum finally decided to say, “Well, some ladies do have them” and I was happy. She said she’d wished she’d just said that after the first time I’d asked. Lol

I love that he’s so proud of himself! My son comes in our room about 10 minutes after we put him to bed to show us that he didn’t pee in his Pull-Up. Duh! He’s been potty-trained for over a year now but still needs a Pull-Up at night.

I laughed hard at the Target/bugs story! That’s just awesome. My 3YO has taken down his pants in many public places before to show me he was dry. Gotta love them!

I absolutely love that he pulled his pants down in the middle of a crowd to show off his dry underwear…that must’ve been ridiculously cute. And my husband’s dog seems a lot like Lucy…one freebie and that’s it. I’ve threatened her numerous times, but she doesn’t even seem to notice. And finally, Bean seems like he’s turning into a little boy…he looks so grown up in that first picture!

  • Nate's Mom @ Nate is Great

My faux nephew, Jack, came to meet Nate when he was born. Jack was three at the time and was wearing big boy boxer briefs. As everyone oohed and aahed over my newborn babe, Jack announced that he was a big boy and had on “big boy underwears.” And then he proceeded to show us all. He was quite proud. And, since he was with family, we all commended him on his nice dry pants. What a struggle that must be in a kid’s head. I have these totally awesome big boy pants that everyone tells me makes me wicked cool but I can’t show them to anybody? Seems like a waste of a cute pair of pants… 😉

Hi Katie! This is my first time posting, but I have been reading your blog for a long time. I love the mini-story about Lucy and Gracie in the bathroom. My little one is 2 1/2 months old and our bulldog, Bugsy, loves to wander over to her bouncy seat. I am waiting for the day that she reaches out and grabs him (although Bugsy does not have a tail to grab on to; his tail is curled into a little ball).

You have inspired me to begin blogging about my little one, husband, dog and our crazy adventures, so thank you!

  • Tara

I had to read the story about bugs in Bean’s hair to my husband! We were both laughing out loud! LOL He is always asking me if Bean has done anything new. Bean is quite a character!
