Olive Garden Review

A few weeks ago, the kind people at Olive Garden sent me a $150 gift card so we could take friends and family to enjoy a nice meal out. Which was funny, because we had gotten two Olive Garden gift cards already for Christmas. Basically, we will be eating at Olive Garden for the remainder of 2012.

Not that I mind. I’m a big fan of Olive Garden!

In college, my BFF, Emily, and I used to eat their soup, salad, and breadsticks for lunch at least once a week. And Chris is a Fettuccine Alfredo junkie, and Olive Garden is his all-time favorite. Even Bean likes it. When we pulled into the parking lot for dinner one night, he looked at the sign and said, “We’re eating grapes for dinner?!?!”

Olive Garden Review

The first night we tried to go to dinner, I’ll admit, it didn’t go well. We had a party of six, and we waited over an hour before we finally gave up and left. The wee ones in our group were gettin’ twitchy. We ended up going home and ordering pizza. Not to be deterred, we tried again a couple nights later with our friends, Sarah and Scott.

Olive Garden Review

Sarah and I are old pros at Olive Garden. We used to go in college, too (apparently, I walked around looking for people to go to Olive Garden with me…). You can’t beat the AYCA soup, salad, and breadsticks deal!

Actually, they are getting ready to run another deal that might actually beat it. Starting January 23rd, for $12.95 you will be able to get soup or salad, one of five new entrees, and one of five Dolcini desserts. (Want to see all the delicious options available with Olive Garden’s 3 Course Italian Dinner? Visit olivegarden.com/specials)

In the past when Sarah and I have gone as poor college students, it was usually just the two of us and occasionally a random boy or two to accompany. But this time, it was kind of a different scene…

Isn’t it funny how that happens over time? It never ceases to amaze me. We started our meal with an appetizer of Bruschetta, one of my all-time favorite appetizers. And I love Olive Garden’s because they bring the tomatoes on the side and you build your own at the table, so it’s not all mushy. This is CRUCIAL to perfect bruschetta. Trust me. I have sampled thousands in my pursuit of perfection.

Olive Garden Review

Bean and Gracie started with a sampler platter of blue Play-Doh. Although, both of them ate their weight in breadsticks, I must confess. Any time I’d stop feeding Gracie, she’d start flapping her arms in the general direction of the bread basket, knocking over anything between her and the bread. Clearly, she is of my loins (ew, I said loins!). (Speaking of loins, please ignore my man-like features in this picture. I didn’t want to be the weirdo with the camera at the restaurant, and so I insisted we use Chris’s camera phone, which now I regret, as I look like a man in every picture.)

Olive Garden Review

After appetizers, we dug into our meals. As always, Olive Garden did not disappoint. Sarah had Ravioli with Portabella Mushrooms. I’m not a fan of mushrooms myself, but she said it was delicious.

Olive Garden Review

Scott had the Tour of Italy. I swear, every time I go to Olive Garden with people, someone always orders this. It’s a crowd pleaser: a taste of this and a taste of that. For a taste of everything, it sure is a lot of food!

Olive Garden Review

Chris had his favorite, Chicken Alfredo, because he’s like a fifth grader when we go out to eat and orders the same thing every time. (I love you, sweetie…)

Olive Garden Review

And I had something I’d never tried before: Shrimp Caprese. It was diiiiiivinnnnnne. I love shrimp, and the sauce for this was perfect. It was light and delicious, but still hearty enough to sop up with (what else?) breadsticks. And – bonus! – it was awesome reheated the next day for lunch!

Olive Garden Review Olive Garden Review

Even Bean Man had a delightfully Italian meal of mac ‘n cheese. Gracie, too. And they shared some grapes, which thrilled Bean because he had predicted that we would eat grapes at Olive Garden! But seriously, they have a great kids menu!

Olive Garden Review

Dinner was a lot of fun. I think we were there for almost two hours. The kids had a great time, we had fantastic service from a lovely waitress who laughed at all my lame jokes, and the atmosphere was comfortable and homey. We even sat at a big round table, just like in my kitchen when I was growing up!

In fact, we had such a good time, we went crazy and ordered this amazing dessert! It was a trio of dessert “shots,” and let me tell you that the caramel chocolate cake/brownie/thingy was to DIE FOR! I drooled. Really. Sarah liked this amaretto tiramisu number that tasted like almond clouds. If I hadn’t been up to my eyeballs in caramel, I might have had more of that one. Chris, knowing better than to fight the womenfolk for dessert, stuck with the straight chocolate cake with this mousse on top that was thick and creamy and rich. Or, so I heard. Chris isn’t very good at sharing.

Olive Garden Review

It had been a while since I’d been to an Olive Garden and I’m so glad that I was able to go back and remind myself how awesome it is to have a restaurant that can grow with you from your skinny salad-only days of college up through the years when you fill your dinner table with babies. It’s nice to know that some places stay the same. That’s comfort food to me.

The last time we went they were having their never ending pasta bowl and it was awesome! This is a tough one. Either I would take my husband out on a date, or do a girl’s night! I haven’ t been out with the ladies in a LONG time, so I might have to choose GIRLS NIGHT OUT!!!!

I’m taking my husband b/c I still owe him his 30th birthday dinner! (I was enduring morning/all-day sickness.)

  55. I would take my husband- he’s getting his MBA while working full time and the poor man is working himself to the bone.

  56. I would take my husband for sure and some new friends for church. Our girls play really well together so maybe we could get a sitter for the whole brood and enjoy a night out with just grownups!

  57. I would take my husband, of course! We rarely go out to eat at sit down restaurants (it’s usually more of a Chipotle or subway type thing), so it would be fun to go out and order everything from appetizer through dessert!

  58. Chrissy

  66. Katie G

I would definitely have to take my fiance! Life has swooped us up and gotten chaotic, so a night out with just the two of us at our fav restaurant would be FANTASTIC!

P.S. I had to laugh at Chris ordering the same thing every time…*guilty* and it’s alfedo for me as well!

  67. DV Aunt Rose

I would take my awesome fiance Nate! We don’t get to spend lovely nights on the town, since we’re working on paying off those old debts. 🙁

  73. Yum! All of your food and descriptions looked amazing and were making me drool a bit on my phone (not pretty I know, but I’m pregnant so I have an excuse, right?!). I would most definitely take my sweet husband to dinner if we were to win the wonderful Olive Garden gift card. Being parents of a one and a half year old, we don’t get to get out much so it would be a wonderful treat!

  137. Aubreylaine

my husband because he is so good to me!
    littlegray88 at yahoo dot com

  138. Megan

I would take my mom, if she wasn’t across the country! My boyfriend will have to do…luckily we both love food more than anything.

  139. How fun!!!! I would take my husband and friends out. Date night with no kids, yes please! 🙂

  140. JenniferLO

I would take my sisters and my parents out the next time we are all together. We all LOVE Olive Garden, but our brothers…not so much, so it’s always a fun treat for us!

  141. I was just at OG the other day for the first time in a couple years and loved my meal! I forgot how delicious the salad is too. I went with girlfriends- I would love to go back with the husband for a date night.

  142. Melanie

Just my husband. We’re expecting our first child and my reasons for wanting to take just him are two-fold: 1) I suspect that our opportunities for meals out together are about to get VERY limited when baby arrives, and 2) Hungry, pregnant me thinks that specials menu looks awesome, and I know my husband would let me share his food too! 🙂

  143. Sarah663

I would take my hubby and my 4 very hungry step-children who love to eat!

  144. Taylor M

I would take the hubby on a nice dinner out. We love OG!

  145. El

I would take my hubby and our boys, and our friends and their twin girls!

  146. Mallory

I would go on a date with my boyfriend …and I’m about to get Olive Garden for dinner now that I’ve read this post…I love that place!

  147. I love love love Olive Garden! It’s my absolute favorite restaurant! If I won, I would take my husband and my best friend (her husband is at tech school and she’s pregnant with twins!).

  148. I would take my husband and another couple that we owe a dinner date to!

  149. Olive Garden’s Fettecuine Alfredo is my favorite too! I would love to win to go eat some, I haven’t been there in years. I would take my husband and parents.

  150. Jessica

    I would take my coworkers!

  151. Elizabeth

It’s been so long since I’ve eaten at Olive Garden! I would take my sweet hubby and two adorable girlies, ages 3 and 5 months. And my parents, so they could help corral kiddos 🙂

  152. Well with $100 I could take both my kids (and my husband of course). We hardly ever ever ever take our kids to restaurants (um, now that I think about it, I think never…) because of a tight budget. But I think they would love it!

  153. Melinda

I live an hour and a half from the nearest Olive Garden. My son and I used to meet and eat there fairly regularly. Now that he has his own family, I don’t go as often because I don’t like to eat out alone. They try to take me there for my birthday, but we don’t always make it (though we talk a lot about how much we miss it!). I would definitely treat my son, his wife, and two little girls. I always pretend I’m going to order something different but end up with my favorite – fettucini alfredo.

  154. Ashley Drown

I would take my hubby and kiddos and some of our friends, we are military and don’t get to spend that much time together. This sounds like the perfect way to do just that!

  155. Anne

If I were to win this gift card, I’d take my husband and our newborn son. We’ve already said ‘The OG’ would be our first meal out when we are ready.

  156. I would take my husband & kids because we never go out! I deserve to not cook for once, right? : )

  157. courtney b

    i would take my husband!

  158. stephanie shoemaker

I would take my husband and boys. They love Olive Garden. It would be a great family outing.

  159. My family and L.O.V.E some pasta from the Olive Garden! With a hungry 2.5 yr old and one on the way, we can put away some groceries!

  160. Rs Mom

I’d take all my girl friends who keep saying “We should get together for lunch”

  161. I would take my husband! Since I quit my job, we have had to cut way back on things like date nights and dinners out, so this would be lovely!

  162. KC

I would take my boyfriend and my parents.

  163. I would take my hubby. The closest Olive Garden is 3 hours away and we always stop when we go to Denver. Sometimes twice! We are so addicted that we even buy the dressing to take home. I love to pour it over freshly picked tomatoes.

We actually were there Monday night in Denver and we had their $12.95 special. We loved the food and the dessert! I had the Limoncello. OMG!!!!!!!

  164. Sara

I would take my husband to celebrate the birth of our baby and the start of a family of 3!

  165. While taking the kids seems like a fine idea, I’d love to take some friends for a “grown-ups only” night out. We don’t get enough of them round these parts.

  166. Elizabeth

I would love to take my family out for a great dinner at Olive Garden! It’s my favorite of all of the chain restaurants!

  167. ZZBenn

I would take my family of 4 and my parents! We love going there for a nice family dinner, and my son LOVES olives, which the nice waiters always bring him on a separate plate, so it’s not covered in salad dressing 🙂

  168. Jana

I would take my mom! She has been through a lot of hard things the past few years and a night out would do her some good!

  169. I would take my family of 6! I don’t think we’ve all been before. It has been years since I’ve been. I love their salad! YUM! I guess for $100 gift card we could go more than once, huh? YAY!

  170. Elisabeth Anders

I would get together with some friends for a fun girls night.

  171. Kristin

I would love to take my family and some friends of ours to dinner! We are getting an olive garden in our town, too!

  172. I would take my parents out for a nice meal. We don’t live really close to one so the rarity of it would be a bounus as well! Also, thanks for the heads up on the three course deal. What a great offer!

  173. Carrie

I would take my parents out – they never go out to eat and this would be a fun outing with my kids!

  177. Jessie C.

I’d go with hubby and kids. We all love Olive Garden.
    tcarolinep at gmail dot com

  178. Debbie B

I would take my husband and my daughter because its one of our favorite places to go!

  179. Lynne

I would take my husband out to Olive Garden…..the one drawback to Olive Garden is that I love their salad so much, I eat it until I burst, so when the entree comes, I am no longer hungry. Of course that just means I get to take it in my lunch the next day, so I guess it is not all bad!

  180. cw

I would take my mom’s group to dinner because we always laugh when we go out together and I need a mom’s night out

  181. Sarah H.

I would take my new Mom friends and their husbands (and of course my husband!) to a nice dinner—we can even bring the kids…or not!

  182. Sarah H.

I tweeted about the give away 🙂
    https://twitter.com/#!/Sarahhash

  183. I’m thinking we are over due for a couple’s date so probably our best friends since college, Joel and Christine.

  184. I would take my hubby and our 5 adult children (if we can get them all together at the same time), oh, and 2 grandsons, too!

  185. Heather Michelle

I would definitely take my family out for my brother’s post-graduation dinner which will be taking place in the end of February! His absolute favorite place is Olive Garden and he would be absolutely thrilled!

  186. Janalynn M

As much as i love my hubs and son, this calls for a girls night out with my BFF’s and hopefully involves some Sangria! Yum!!

  187. I would take my in-laws out on the town. Because I think it’s the only way to get them out of the rural areas and into a city! I love Olive Garden, it’s right next to my gym and it’s always to tempting to go there and binge on carbs after a workout.

  188. Brittany N.

I would take my hubby out on a date! It’s been over a year since we’ve been on one!

  189. I would invite another set of new parents, our friends Cat and Steve. We’d get to have a night out, sans our precious babies (paging grandparents: we’ll need a babysitter that night!)… and we’d raise a toast (or two) to surviving our first year of parenthood!

  190. I’d go out with my girlfriends, Emily, Amy, and Julie and treat them to dinner and a girls night out!

  191. jennifer h.

I would take my lovely husband of course. Then I would take my friend Tiffany and her husband whom I haven’t seen in months! I would also bring my in laws because they are always good company.

  192. Sherine

I would take my mother, father and sister. Since my sister and I left the nest, it’s been a while since we all got together for an old-fashioned good meal!

  193. Peggy A

I would take my family of 4 plus my son’s darling girlfriend who adores Olive Garden!

  194. We are going to celebrate my daughter’s debut on the Wheel of Fortune this Thursday night by going to dinner after at our local Olive Garden. Love the food but am sad to hear they might be doing away with unlimited bread sticks!

  195. My husband, of course! And my kids, if they act nice…

  196. Elizabeth

I haven’t been to an Olive Garden in years, but your post is making me hungry for a visit! I would take my 10-year-old daughter who would love the place, I have no doubt!

  197. Heather O.

Love OG! We don’t get there much because there is just one in our town and there is always a 45 minute wait. No matter the time of day you go and with a 7 y/o and 4 y/o a 45 min way just isn’t going to work. I would probably take my hubby and my cousin and her girlfriend. They are both a little down on their luck and I’m sure they could use a good family meal.

  198. Sarah

I don’t remember if I entered once already, but I would love to bring my husband. Thanks to our D*sney schedules, we don’t see each other much because I’m always going to bed way earlier. Plus, we don’t make enough to go out to eat as much as we could.

  199. Joanne

I love Olive Garden! I would totally bring my hubby – and see if the in-laws could watch the kids 🙂

  200. You had me at bread sticks… 🙂

I would take our family — that isn’t usually the type of restaurant we would choose (3 small kiddos) but this would be an awesome opportunity to check it out!

  201. I would love to go with my Husband. We don’t get to go out to anywhere ‘fancy’ all that often.

  202. BrookeC

I would take my husband and kids. My husband lost of his job recently so we never get to eat out anymore.

  203. Kitty

I would take my husband and only living brother. My brother is disabled and lives in a group home. He just loves to go out in general but really enjoys going to restaurants. He has loved my husband from the moment they met and they talk non stop when together. Olive Garden is a family restaurant and there sometimes animated conversations would not be out of place. I know we would all have a great evening.

  204. I would take my 6YO daughter… she is always asking me when we are going to Olive Garden for dinner, it’s her favorite!! and we might get a couple visits out of $100 Or, I would go as a family… all of my kids love that place and so do my husband and I!!

  205. Ginna

Oh what a fun way to treat the man and maybe some friends to dinner!

  217. Ashley Herlihy

I would send (it would be considered inappropriate for me to take them) a group of my most hard-working students. I teach at a rural high school about forty miles from my home, so even though I am five seconds from OG, it is likely that many of my students have never eaten there.

  218. KatieLM

I would take my best friend, and perhaps my parents…

  219. I would take my daughter, my hubby of 42 years, my DDIL and son. I LOVE their chicken Marsala! YUMMMMM. Thanks for the giveaway chance.

  221. savannah s.

I’d have to take my mom and my boyfriend’s mom out for a nice meal. Both have recently gotten laid off from their jobs, and it would give them time to commiserate as well as become closer with me!

  222. Jeanne Medina

I would take my husband, kids, and parents. We all love Olive Garden! The service, (at the one near us), is always great, and if we go during “off ” times, there’s rarely a wait for a booth.

  223. Lyn Brewer

We love OG! I would most definitely take my precious husband, my son and new daughter-in-love and my daughter and our soon-to-be son-in-love! I MISS my family around the table as they are all grown up and it would bring this mama’s such joy to be together eating yummy italian !

  224. Leann Lindeman

I would take my husband for sure and maybe if if was feeling very generous I would take my daughter and her fiance.

  225. Natalie J Vandenberghe

  231. Ann

OG is my kids’ FAVORITE place to eat, so I would take the whole fam for sure!

  232. Jenna

I’d take my mom (multiple times, if I got the giftcard – $100 goes a long way for two people!). She works so hard and eats so little – I like to make her eat real food whenever I can.

  237. Kristin
