Out of the Mouths of Babes

-6
On Mother’s Day afternoon, I was sitting on my parent’s porch with my mom, Grandma, Sarah, and the kids. We were eating strawberry shortcake and enjoying the beautiful weather, while Bean and Gracie puttered around their little picnic table my mom bought for them.

Life was grand.

Sarah and I were talking about something when all of a sudden, we both heard Bean say (quite loudly), “HOLY SH…” Immediately, it was silent out on the porch.

“What’d he say?” Sarah whispered.

“I don’t know,” I whispered back. And then turning to Bean, I said casually, “What’d you say, Buddy?”

He looked right at me and clear as a bell said, “Holy shit.”

Now, I know the appropriate thing to do in these situations is to ignore your child. Bean wasn’t doing it for attention, and so I didn’t want to call attention to the phrase unnecessarily, but I turned to look at Sarah and she was literally falling off the front porch swing where we were sitting because she was laughing so hard.

Which got me laughing.

Which got Sarah laughing.

Which got me laughing.

Which got BEAN laughing.

And then we had to stop. Because if he knew what we were laughing at, there was a good chance he would say it again. So, we stopped.

And then Sarah started laughing again.

And then I started laughing again.

Goodness, I never knew inappropriate language from a toddler could be so funny! NOT THAT WE ENCOURAGE THAT, but still. It was good for an afternoon giggle.

Imagining that in the innocent, high pitched, angel voice I hear on your home videos I’ve seen, I’m laughing too!

Kids, they’re wonderful for an inappropriate laugh 🙂

It’s so hard not to laugh when they swear for the first time! Our oldest says the f-word on a daily basis, and now we ignore it but she still does it.

I would have been guilty of laughing too – just as I did when C spouted out the “damnit” that I am known for tossing out from time to time. She said it just the way that I do too – short, quick, and kinda under my breath.

Haha, I would have laughed as well. That is my fear as my husband swears like a crazy. I’m pretty sure it’s only a matter of time before we get a call from daycare. He also says “truck” but it comes out sounding like the f bomb. I’ve gotten a lot of strange looks in public.

OMG! That’s freaking awesome! I have to admit… I’ve heard Zoe try to repeat a few words that I’ve said and {at this age} I tend to ask her to repeat herself a couple times just because it’s so darn funny… and really cute. But, just watch, she’s going to be in the nursery at church and haul off with a “bullshit”… =)

Even though Nate is nonverbal, he has a few words in his back pocket. One of them is “shit.” He demonstrated his capacity to use this word when being filmed with his autism therapists for a “best practices” review by the State. Kid you not: Nate did not want to do the activity, Lisa asked him to do it again, and he slowly leaked out, “Shhhhhhiiiiiiiiit,” ending with a deadpan to the camera. I passed out laughing, Nate’s occupational and speech therapists launched into that soundless, belly hurting laugh, and Ms. Lisa carried on as if nothing happened. Needless to say, Nate’s word debut was edited out of the film sent to the State…. 😉

So hilarious! I still remember my 4 year old, on a tour given by her daddy at the fire station, trying to open a door and LOUDLY saying “HOLY CRAP. Mommy this door won’t open” Oh my goodness. I didn’t know whether to ignore it, burst in hysterics or die of embarrassment.

I’m sorry, maybe I’m still 12 instead of 35, but I have to admit, I think it’s funny. It’s bad, right, because it’s a reflection on me — she had to hear it somewhere – but I laugh, too. And then catch myself the next time I am about to cuss in front of my almost 3 year old. I’m sure Bean was the cutest little potty mouth! Also, is it wrong that I give points for using said word or phrase in context? When my child was merely 16 months she dropped something and said “truck.” The teacher told us this….my husband looked at the teacher and said, was she playing with a truck? Nope, no she wasn’t…..
