A Celebratory Splurge

A few weeks ago, my principal asked me to go on the morning announcements one morning to share some information about a fundraiser I am doing with a club that I am the advisor for at my school. So, that morning, I headed down to the TV production studio with my data and supplies to make my announcement. My principal came in to make an announcement, too, and sat down next to me.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“Oh, I have to make some teacher and student presentations,” she said nonchalantly.

So, I sat there in my chair while she gave out a few awards, and I waited to make my announcement. But when I thought all of her awards were done, she started describing a teacher without saying what this last award was. I was thinking to myself, “That kind of sounds like things I’ve done…” but it could also have been a handful of other teachers, too, so I didn’t think too much about it. But then, I heard her say something about the language arts department chair, and that’s my new role this year. My ears perked up and I sat straight up in my chair.

Something was up.

“…And that’s why I am proud of announce that Katie Brown is our 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year!” my principal gushed – and then balloons and flowers came out and my students started cheering and someone started squealing (I later realized it was me that was squealing)! I was not expecting that announcement at ALL, and I just about wet my pants right there on our morning announcements.

This past weekend, Chris and I went out for drinks and dinner with another couple.  It was just supposed to be a fun night out, but Chris and I used it to celebrate my award. We went to this really fun tequila bar for drinks before hand, and then to dinner at Season’s 52, which is one of the nicest restaurants in Orlando. After dinner, we weren’t quite ready to head home yet, so we went bowling at a place called Kings, which is a chic little bowling alley where waiters serve you in your lane. It was a lot of fun. Actually, a little too much fun. The next morning was kind of slow moving for me… and everyone was really loud… and the lights were really bright…

It was way more money than Chris and I normally spend on a date night.  But, you know, sometimes you just need to splurge to remind yourself that you still can. So, I put on a dress, drank some mojitos (…and a little vodka…and a bottle of wine…and a little more vodka…), and had a great evening with fun people.

And, of course, this guy.

Because it isn’t a celebration is this guy isn’t celebrating with me.
