Meatless Meals for a Carnivorous Family

FACT: I eat meat.

FACT: My whole family eats meat.

FICTION:  Vegetarian products are just for vegetarians.

I first discovered MorningStar Farms meatless burgers when one of my close friends became a vegetarian.  We would have cookouts and she would bring over this cute little box of her own Spicy Black Bean Burger.  I was intrigued by this because she would do everything we carnivores did.  She took a bun, smeared on mustard and ketchup, added lettuce, onion, and tomato, and threw a pickle on the side.  Her meal looked just like mine. But she was vegetarian. Untitled “HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!?!”  My mind screamed into the heavens.  “I AM SO CONFUSED BY THIS HERBIVORE!”

Later, Sarah and I would talk about why she became a vegetarian and what she liked about the vegetarian diet.  “I just don’t feel so heavy after meatless meals,” she would explain. Now, I could never give up meat myself.  I loves me a good steak.  But, the thought of not feeling so “heavy” after a meal was enticing to me.  The next time we had a cook out, I bummed a MorningStar Farms Spicy Black Bean Burger off of her.  And I was hooked.

I have since tried a variety of products that MorningStar Farms offers, most recently their Buffalo Chik’n Patty and the Baja Black Bean Pizza (I’m a sucker for black beans, can you tell?).  What I love about these products is that they don’t necessarily try to replicate the taste of these meaty meals.  Instead, they create a taste all their own – and the taste is GOOOOOOOOD. Untitled I have even had the Spicy Black Bean Burger and the Buffalo Chik Patty on biscuits before for breakfast!  And their burgers are great reheated the next day in the teacher’s lounge for lunch. Their full flavor covers up that traditional “fake meat” taste that so many carnivores like myself fear.  MorningStar Farms products don’t have that because they aren’t “fake meat.”  Instead, they are excellent meat substitutions that help me to feed my family in a healthy, crowd-pleasing way.

Tonight, we had the Spicy Black Bean Burger (the house favorite here), and then I put fresh pineapple and grapes in the middle of the table.  Chris added his favorite cucumbers in vinegar, and we called it a meal success!  Giving our kids healthy options during dinner has become one of our best parenting tricks.  They don’t have to eat everything.  They get to choose what goes on their plate.  But they are able to choose because I give them choices that are all healthy and good for them.  Everyone wins!
