“Mrs. Brown, we have your children.”

This week has been a whirlwind. I have been in a week long digital curriculum training for school, and will continue to be in it through part of next week. I have been equal parts really excited because I geek out over this kind of stuff, and equal parts really bummed because I had hoped I would be floating in the pool with my kids by now. But, I’m hunkering down and trying to focus on the positive instead… at least until next Wednesday.

The digital curriculum sessions last from 8:30 until 3:30 every day, and the days are packed full. I’m learning a lot of new information, and then using that information to turn some of my regular digital lessons into supercharged digital lessons. In the world of geeks and teachers, this is cutting edge stuff. But it requires my brain to work at max capacity all day long. By the time 3:30 rolls around, I am practically brain dead. I can barely have a conversation with someone.

Today, rather than immediately going to pick the kids up from daycare, I went home to take care of a few chores around the house. I planned to pick them up around 5:00 instead. So, I folded some laundry, worked on some writing I had been meaning to get to, checked my email, and then picked up my book.

Picking up my book was the fatal flaw.

It was now 4:30. I had 30 minutes to kill, so I decided to kick my feet up for a few minutes and knock out a few chapters in the book I’m reading (With by Skye Jethani, if you’re interested).

The next thing I know, my cell phone is waking me out of a dead sleep. It was the daycare.

“Mrs. Brown?” the called politely addresses me. “Um… We still have your children. Were you coming to get them soon?”

I looked at the clock on the wall – 6:10.

The daycare had closed 10 minutes ago!!!!!

Mortified, I jumped off the couch and flew to pick up Bean and Gracie, both of whom were none too pleased about being the LAST kids at the daycare.

“Mom!” Bean chastised. “Everyone’s been WAITING for you!”

So, there. Feel better about your parenting. You’re welcome.

And while we’re talking about daycare, these are pictures from Bean’s graduation from preschool a couple of weeks ago. He’s a graduate!

While I know how horrible that feeling is, your kids were safe with people who care about them, and you don’t do that regularly, so give yourself a break! At Colin’s preschool, if a parent is late the kids sit in these little chairs. I’m usually there early, waiting for him to come out, but one day I was the last parent (not even late, just the last one)…..and Colin said, exasperatedly, “Mom, I ALMOST had to sit in a chair!” Geez. 🙂

Wow! After reading this and seeing your instagram feed, I see that you lead an extremely busy life. Wishing you some down time floating in the pool and eating taco dip (I’m sure there’s a Pinterest float to make that possible).

At my son’s first school they would turn off all the lights in all the classrooms except one (they were mostly divided by half walls) and make the kids sit at a table in the one cleaned up classroom. Needless to say, I was only late once. Haha! We’ve all done it. Give yourself a break.

You’re not the first person and you won’t be the last! At least you’re not a regular offender and were embarrassed about it, rather than thinking it’s their problem. (Hmmm….can you tell I’ve dealt with “that parent” before? HA!)

I would love to hear what Digital Training you were in this week! I am working on a project like this (Digital PD) for teachers.

Have you read the book Digital Teaching Platforms (Chris Dede and John Richards)?
