12 Hours on a Couch

The first few weeks of school have been overload for our family.  We hosted five large parties at our house in three weekends.  It was lots of fun and we loved every minute of it, but when we realized our first weekend without any plans was also a three day weekend, we felt like we deserved something really great.  Something really special.  Something AMAZING.

I sat on the couch for 12 hours and it was everything I hoped it would be.

Friday night was rainy and mushy, thanks to the last of Hurricane Hermine, so we ordered pizza and had a family movie night in the family room.  We rented “Angry Birds” from iTunes, stuffed ourselves with pizza, and spent some time together in PJ’s.  It was pretty great.  I went to bed that night thinking, “We should really do more of this relaxing together thing.”

So, I decided to do more of it on Saturday.  Saturday morning, I sat up my little nest on the couch in the family room and got to work on two equally important tasks:  grading student work and watching the first College Game Day of the football season!  WHOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

Chris hung out with me all morning and I got so much school work done without even moving off the couch.  Even the kids hung with us for a while.

By lunchtime, though, Chris got antsy.  He went to put chili in the crockpot for dinner and to hit some golf balls with a friend at the driving range. Not wanting to be a complete lush while he was being all responsible or whatever, I got up and changed… into clean yoga pants. Then, came back downstairs and settled back into my nest. I spent the next three hours grading papers, watching football, and napping off and on. It was glorious.

By dinnertime, the family had come back. Which was nice. 12 hours of sitting on a couch by yourself is pretty awesome, but it’s even more awesome when you have your people there with you. We settled in with big bowls of chili and watched the Gator game.

We sent the kids to bed at halftime, and Chris and I stayed up to watch more football. It was a pretty good date night, and I didn’t have to change clothes, do my make up, or even get off my couch!

I sat on the couch all day as people came and went around me. I only got up to go to the bathroom and forage for food. While I don’t think I could do this every weekend, it was certainly a nice change of pace and a treat for a day. Also, turns out, I’m pretty good at just sitting down. And we should always work hard at our talents.

I’m so wise.
