Weekend Recap: Summer Countdown!

We had a long, lazy Memorial Day weekend.  We were supposed to get some nasty weather from a tropical storm, but the rain never came.  It was super windy and cloudy all weekend, which made everything kind of…blah… but the rain was really minimal.  But even with the weather, we were outside most of the weekend.  Ahhh… Florida life…  We are counting down to summer these days and with weekends like this, our summer countdown is going by faster and faster!

Friday Night

On Friday night, I met some of my teacher friends from my previous school at Disney for a girl’s night out, Disney style.  Out of these girls, I’m the only one who doesn’t have an annual Disney pass, but I bummed my way in on a family pass with one of them.  Whoop, whoop!  I had never been to Disney without my kids before and there were a lot of differences.  Mostly, I caught myself looking around for the kids about four million times.  It was weird to not have any responsibilities!  And I could eat something completely by myself!  Normally, we share food when we go to the parks because they give you so much and because it’s crazy expensive.  But this time, I ordered my own dinner, dessert, and late night snack and didn’t have to share with ANYONE!  It was heaven!

Saturday Morning

Saturday morning, we went with Chris to his hockey game.  He plays in a pick up league every Saturday morning on the other side of town, but we are usually running in a thousand different directions and so the kids and I hardly ever go with him.  But with everything winding down for the year, we found ourselves with a completely free day to spend.  It’s always fun to watch Chris play.  He’s played hockey since he was a kid and it’s fun to see him playing now with his own kids watching.

He is always getting onto me for taking pictures of him during the game.  “None of the other guys have families here taking pictures…” he whispers to me.  So, I sent Gracie over to the bench during the first intermission and told her to take a picture.  She did pretty good!  🙂

Saturday Afternoon

After hockey, we dropped Chris at home so that he could shower (holy hell, hockey players smell!) and I took the kids up to the library to return some books and get new ones.  We are making our summer reading lists right now and I’ll be sure to share them with you later this week.

We ran home and ate lunch at the house before we all went out and jumped in the pool for the afternoon.  It was cloudy and dark and windy, but no rain or lightning, so in we went!

Saturday Night

That night, we had a big dinner and then had game night at the kitchen table.  Chris’s granddad has been staying with us for a while while he waits for a medical procedure to be done later this week, and we have been soaking up this time with him.  He lives in the Virgin Islands where he works for the Red Cross on hurricane relief and recovery, so we only get to see him a few times a year. It’s been nice to have a few weeks of meals and relaxing and game nights with him.

Even Gus came out for game night!  Although, he was no help to me because he ate my grapes and kept getting in the way of my dice rolls.  For our game night ideas, check out this post.

Sunday

Sunday morning I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a bus.  I didn’t have any sickness symptoms at all, but I was EXHAUSTED!  I thought maybe it was this drabby weather that was getting me down, but I could barely keep my eyes open!  Luckily, we only had a birthday party on the calendar, and so I just kind of propped myself up in the corner of the patio against Chris until it was time to go.  Everyone else had a blast, though!  We came home, had some dinner, and I was asleep by 8:00 and then didn’t wake up until 10:15 the next morning!  (By the way, someone mentioned at the party that these giant swan floats are on sale at Michael’s right now for BOGO and that they have swans, flamingos, wine glasses, and more!)

I posted to Instagram about it and the general consensus seemed to be that I was “end of the year teacher tired,” and there were a TON of you out there who were in the same boat!  My last day with students is this Wednesday and then I have post-planning on Thursday and Friday.  I don’t think I’ve ever been more ready for summer.  My summer will be really different this year as I transition into work for ClassMax full time.  I am still not sure if this will be my new full time job in the fall or if I will continue teaching, and that uncertainty is weighing on me, too.  I’m sure that’s a lot of the exhaustion I feel.  Change is brewing, and we all know that I don’t do well with change.

For now, though, I’m trying to focus on one day at a time.  One foot in front of the other.  And with weekends like this one,  thanks for friends and family, it makes that black cloud of uncertainty a little bit less scary.
