When Children Change Your Lives

Recently, I saw a preview for the Dreamworks movie “Delivery Man,” starring Vince Vaughn.  It looked like something right up my alley.  The perfect comedy of errors which leads to self-reflection and improved character.  (Pretty hefty meaning for Vince Vaughn, right???)  The movie is a hilarious and heartfelt movie about a man who goes on an unexpected journey to find his children that he never knew he had. Watching the preview in the movie theater made me stop and think about how drastically mine and Chris’ lives have changed since our own two children came into our lives.  It’s not actually our lives that have changed so much, I guess.  I mean, sure, we now spend the majority of our time chasing children as opposed to drinking beer on our back porch.  We still do drink beer on our back porch from time to time.  And, yes, we do find ourselves saying strange things now like, “Don’t hit your sister with the golf club,” or “No, you can’t bury our LIVING dog in the back yard.”  So, in those respects, our lives have definitely changed. IMG_8392 But really, what has changed the most is who Chris and I are as a couple.  When we had children together, it was like we suddenly opened up this giant reservoir of love in our marriage that we never even knew existed.  We have loved each other for just about our entire lives, but when we looked at these two perfect little people that we made together…  I don’t know.  It was just a different, deeper kind of love.  It was a love that I feel to my core, deep, deep down in my bones. Chris and I have learned together as parents.  We’ve grown together.  And we’ve changed together.  But throughout every trial and triumph we have faced in parenthood, that reservoir of love has continued to deepen and flow.  It seems endless at times.  Like this deep abyss of warmth and love and light that radiates out of each of us because we have done this incredible thing together.  Because we are DOING this incredible thing together.  We have created babies and we are raising them as one family.  Together. I hear so many young couples say that they aren’t ready to have children yet because they are enjoying their time together.  And I completely understand that.  Chris and I were married for five years before we had Michael, and it was a lovely time together.  We needed that time together.  But, I often want to smile and whisper to those couples, “Oh, sweetheart, you just have no idea how deep your love can be.” But I stop myself because I don’t want to give away the happy ending.
