“Hey, Bean,” said Molly. “What are you doing?”
“I’m just sittin’ in my tunnel,” Bean said. “Wanna come in here with me?”
“I don’t think I can fit,” said Big Molly.
“Sure you can! Here, I’ll pull you in,” said Bean.

“It won’t work,” said Molly. “I’m too big!”

“Well, then I’ll come out there and sit with you!” said Bean.

“Oh, Bean,” said Big Molly. “You’re the best!”

“Thanks for offering to come out here with me, but why don’t you stay in your tunnel and play and I’ll just sit out here beside you.”
“Okay, Big Molly,” said Bean. “I like it when you’re beside me.”
“I’ll always be beside you, Bean,” said Big Molly.

“Come on, Beanie,” I said. “Let’s put on your shoes for our fall family picture.”
“Oh, man!” said Beanie. “I hate wearing shoes!”
“I know, Buddy. You don’t have to wear them for long.”

“Well, I don’t know,” he said. “Are you sure I don’t look silly?”
“No way, Bean! You look so handsome in your fall outfit!”
“Yeah, but you’re my mom,” said Beanie. “Molly, how do you think I look?”

“Pimpin’,” said Molly. “You look pimpin’.”
“Pimpin’” repeated Beanie. “I can handle that.”

“Okay, Mom. Lets do this fall family picture thing.”
“Okay, Bean,” I said. “Say cheese.”

When we rescued Molly from a shelter almost two years ago, we thought she’d be a perfect friend for our little dog, Lucy. But Lucy didn’t want a friend. She was an independent woman.
That hasn’t really changed over the years.

So, that left Big Molly to her own devices.

Sometimes that meant she got bored and destroyed things. Sometimes that meant she forgot she was a dog and tried to eat off the dining room table. But mostly that meant she just waited around for something to happen.

And then one day, something happened. We brought Beanie home from the hospital.

Molly was curious about the Bean from Day One. She immediately started sleeping in the nursery with him, right next to his crib. And when he was awake, Molly wanted to be wherever he was. At first, she was very cautious. She seemed to know that Beanie was teeny tiny and so she was just near him at all times.

But the bigger Bean has become, the closer Molly has gotten.

And sometimes she gets a little close.

A little toooo close.

But she can’t help it.

She just loves that Beanie.

I think she likes the way he smells. Like vanilla. And poo. Molly’s two favorite thins.

So, Molly just follows the Bean now from room to room, toy to toy, activity to activity, playing right along beside him.

It used to bother me that Molly got so close to the baby. She was always leaving him covered in dog hair. And her kisses were like a bath for the Bean.

But then I see the two of them together. I see how gentle Big Molly is with Beanie. I picture them in a few years. Beanie and Molly. Finding frogs and hunting worms in the backyard. And I think to myself, “How bad can dog hair really be?”

So, its okay with me if Molly likes to be close to Beanie. I think Beanie likes being close to Big Molly, too.

(Psst…Too close, Molly. A little too close…)
