My Keys to Happiness

Last week at the gym, I tried listening to a podcast instead of music while I was running.  I didn’t like it.  I need the beat of the music.  But, the podcast I listened to was really interesting.  It was a TedTalk on the study of happiness.  This guy had done research and found that people were happier when they were focused on the task at hand, even if it wasn’t a task they were particularly fond of.  When minds wander, we become less happy, according to the study. Considering…

Why I Quit My Happiness Project

April has come and almost gone.  There have been no Happiness Project updates this month for one very simple reason:  there is no more Happiness Project. I struggled with quitting my Happiness Project for the same reason I struggle to quit anything.  I don’t want to give up.  I want to see something through until the bitter end, whether I’m happy about it or not.  But after much reflection in March, I realized that this definitely defeats the purpose of a happiness project at all. I started my own Happiness…

Teacups of Nots

Oh, what an Easter we had, friends!  What joy!  What blessings!  What happiness! Our table was full of food and treats… Our baskets were full of eggs… Our backyard was full of children… Our house was full of family and friends. What more can you ask for? So often, I focus on the “not” in my life. What’s not in my closet. What’s not in my home. What’s not in my paycheck. What’s not in my driveway. What’s not in my marriage. What’s not in my life. And I think…

Art Festival Goodness

This weekend, we loaded the kids up on Saturday morning and headed down to the Lake Eola Arts Festival. Lake Eola is this giant lake in the middle of downtown Orlando. The city has spent tons of money in the past few years cleaning up the lake and making the area a really nice place for families to visit. There is a playground and always lots of ducks to feed. Plus, they have wide, clean sidewalks and big areas of grass to play in. Normally, we don’t get downtown much…

Busy Doing Nothing Important

I was going to sit down and write an apology for my sudden disappearance from the blog world.  I was going to explain how busy I have been and how much I have been doing.  But then, I realized… I haven’t been busy at all.  And I’ve loved every minute of it! The past two weeks have been full of deliciously unimportant-important time spent with my kids and Chris.  Afternoons are low-key and slow-paced for once.  I’ve been leaving work on time instead of staying later, which means afternoons with…

Happiness is a Minor Change Away

My Happiness Project has been on temporary hiatus for the past two weeks while I get back on my feet.  But I’m back up and running again, and so I’ve recommitted to my January and February goals.  From January, I am continuing to stick to my bedtime.  And even Chris is joining in on the fun now.  He gets bored sitting downstairs without me, so he has been coming to bed when I do.  It’s actually been good for him, too.  He even told me the other day he feels…

Lessons I Learned This Week

This week has been a doozey, imaginary friends.  I had a bad reaction to a medication I was put on and have been shaky, dizzy, and fatigued all week, for about 24-hours we thought we might have to put Lucy down, I was basically eaten alive by a parent at a conference this week, Bean had a terrible stomach bug and threw up for two days on every linen and car we own, work has suddenly imploded, Chris has missed work so much in the past two weeks that he…

Smooth Operator

Part of my February goals for my happiness project includes having a smoothie for breakfast during the work week.  So far, it has been going pretty good.  I’ve posted some pictures on Instagram (yes, I’m that person who posts pictures of their food…) and have received lots of questions about the smoothie operation.  I’m sure there are lots of other ways to make them, but here’s what I’ve been doing… I went to the grocery store and bought a few essentials – blueberries, bananas, spinach, a fresh pineapple, frozen strawberries,…

My Happiness Project: January Recap

I looked at my calendar this week and was shocked to find that January was almost over already!  Holy crap!  Where has the month gone?!?!  Maybe I have SLEPT IT AWAY!!!!! In case you missed it, I am doing my own “Happiness Project” in 2014, based on the book titled (obviously…), “The Happiness Project.”  For the month of January, I focused on getting more sleep.  It was essential to my health and my happiness that I get more sleep this year, and I am happy to report that I am!!!…

Small Change. Big Happy.

My name is Katie, and I am a purger. It drives my husband crazy, but I can’t help it.  I throw things away.  Sometimes it’s things that are trash.  Sometimes it’s things that are collecting dust.  Sometimes it’s things that I don’t like.  And sometimes it’s things that belong to Chris.  But I throw them all away. I don’t like clutter or piles of things sitting around.  My philosophy is that if you have been able to live without it for a year… or a month… or a week… or…
