My Keys to Happiness

Last week at the gym, I tried listening to a podcast instead of music while I was running.  I didn’t like it.  I need the beat of the music.  But, the podcast I listened to was really interesting.  It was a TedTalk on the study of happiness.  This guy had done research and found that people were happier when they were focused on the task at hand, even if it wasn’t a task they were particularly fond of.  When minds wander, we become less happy, according to the study. Considering…

Eff This Healthy Shizzzz

A few weeks ago, I blogged about how I have given up certain things in my life in order to simplify and make myself happier.  One of the things I gave up was dieting.  This was stupid. I have now reached a size where I don’t even feel like myself anymore.  You know those unflattering pictures that sometimes get taken of you by accident?  The ones where you are in the peripheral or the background and you were clearly not prepared to be photographed?  You’re hunched over in the most…

Purging My Schedule

The other day at lunch, I ran up to the grocery store near my school to pick up a few things for an ice cream party I was throwing some of my students.  At the grocery store, I ran into a teacher that I used to teach with.  She has kids my own kids’ ages, and she quit teaching last year to stay home with them for a while.  I asked her how she was doing and what she was getting herself into these days. “Nothing,” she said.  “I gave…

I’ll Miss This One Day

This past Saturday afternoon, we were all in the kitchen having lunch.  We had a baseball game to get to, and Chris and I were hurrying around trying to get ready to go and the kids were goofing around while they ate. And I thought to myself in the middle of the shuffle, “I’ll miss this one day.” I’ll miss the normalcy of intense Pokemon discussions and negotiations over how many carrots have to be eaten. I’ll miss the countless, half-dressed baby dolls that I have to share meals with…

Happy Mother’s Day to Me!

As the kids get older, the Mother’s Days become even better. They are filled with more handmade artwork and lots of “you’re the best mommy ever’s.” My Mother’s Day celebration actually began Friday morning when I had “Muffins with Mom” at Gracie’s preschool. It is the seventh year I have had this breakfast at this school, and every year it gets sweeter and sweeter. (This is Gracie’s painting of me. I am particularly fond of the pink hair.) On Sunday, we packed up and headed to the beach. My favorite…

Good Job, Katie Girl

I’ve been thinking about my dad a lot recently.  I think about him all the time anyway, but lately it has been more than normal.  My mom is selling her house.  In fact, she closed on her new one just yesterday.  I’m so happy for her, but, as it turns out, seeing her move out of the house she shared with my dad is harder than I thought it would be.  On the day that she closed, she texted us the good news and we all celebrated with her.  But…

Guilt’s a Punk

So, the guilt beast showed up this week with guns blazing.  I’ve been feeling pretty great lately about our family, and that guilt bastard sniffed out my confidence and was like, “WHOAH, THERE SISTER.  It’s been a while since I’ve whacked you with mom guilt.  My bad.  Here you go.” WHAM. Guilt’s a punk.   Today, Gracie had a spaghetti lunch for parents in her classroom.  Chris and I have known about this for a few weeks now, and since it is really hard for him to get across town…

Adventure, Exploring, Laughing, and Growing

One of the things I did in the past year without blogging was to plug into my kids activities more.  One of those was getting involved in Cub Scouts with Bean.  He was a Tiger Scout this past year, and we have loved every single minute of it. One of my favorite things about Cub Scouts is how family-oriented it is.  Our whole family participates, even Gracie, and that not only makes it Bean’s extra curricular activity, but really a family commitment. Chris and I are the den leaders of Bean’s…

Half-Assed and Sassy: I’m Back!

(tap, tap, tap) IS THIS THING ON????? (tap, tap, tap) Well, kids.  I just couldn’t stay away.  Turns out, when you’re a writer – even a kitchen table one – you miss writing.  Who knew?! I stepped away for almost a whole year from this bloggity-blog and freelance writing, and what a wonderful decision that has been.  I have stretched myself into whole areas of my family’s life that I wouldn’t have been able to plug into if I had continued blogging.  I’ve become the Den Leader of Bean’s Cub…

From the Mouth of Babes

For Gracie’s birthday, my mom gave Gracie her first real set of golf clubs.  She has given golf clubs to each of the “baby grands,” as she calls them, when they were old enough.  We all play golf in my family, and have for years.  But since my dad’s passing, golf has taken on an even more special meaning for all of us because it makes us feel closer to him. My dad was an incredible golfer.  Growing up, I thought all people were as good at golf as my…
