Great Beginnings(?)

Yesterday, while Gracie was at Trolls camp, Chris, Bean, and I moved my classroom supplies into my new classroom at my new school. We have had two full van-loads of my classroom materials sitting in our dining room all summer long and Chris was more than happy to help me get them somewhere more permanent! I’m not going to lie. It was a little overwhelming for me. On one hand, it was such a relief to finally BE somewhere. To know what to expect and to get my hands on…

Purging My Schedule

The other day at lunch, I ran up to the grocery store near my school to pick up a few things for an ice cream party I was throwing some of my students.  At the grocery store, I ran into a teacher that I used to teach with.  She has kids my own kids’ ages, and she quit teaching last year to stay home with them for a while.  I asked her how she was doing and what she was getting herself into these days. “Nothing,” she said.  “I gave…

It’s Why I’m Here

This week, my sweet dad has been driving over an hour to my house every morning in order to stay with Bean during the day so that Chris and I don’t have to miss work to stay home with him.  My mom came down today, too, and so Bean had twice the fun with Nana AND Granddad.  And they’ve nursed him back to health.  He is a little cranky, but I think mostly that’s from being cooped up in the house for five days straight.  He hasn’t been running a…

Home Sweet Home

We spent this past weekend unpacking more boxes.  And unpacking more boxes.  And unpacking even more boxes. I should mention here that we had five different friends help us move out of the old house and into the new one and every single one of those people commented at one point or another that they didn’t understand how we had so much crap.  I would like to suggest that the reason for this is because I am married to the King of All Pack Rats.  Chris will not let me…

And Now Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Programming

Anybody there? (tap, tap) Hello? Helllllloo? HELLLOOOOO???? (tap, tap) Bueller?  Bueller? Oh, imaginary friends, how I’ve missed you so!  We have never been separated so long before and I do have to say that absence definitely does make the heart grow fonder because I just kept thinking as I sat on the phone with AT&T every day yelling at someone in India about my internet connection not working, “Gosh, I wonder what those crazy imaginary friends are up to these days?” Though, when I tried to explain to the person…

In Transition

This weekend we moved out of the house we’ve been renting for the past six months.  I’ve never been happier to leave somewhere before.  After the break in, it was next to impossible to make that place feel like a home.  We are meeting today to sign our lease on our new house which is much bigger, in a much nicer neighborhood, and even has a pool!  This nice little upgrade is brought to you by TWO INCOMES!  Yay for employment! Unfortunately, we can’t move into the new house until…

On the Sunny Side of the Street (Freaking Finally!)

Well, ain’t it nice to see you all again!  I have missed you!  But I had a much needed little time-out with the fam and we are all in a much better place today.  I guess I should bring you all up to speed because there has been a LOT going on ’round these here parts. After the break in last weekend, we packed up basically our entire house except for the furniture and went to stay with my parents.  It has been so nice to be here and to…

Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds

Once upon a time there was a little mutt puppy named Lucy.  She was beloved by her owner named Katie and all was right with the world. Together, Katie and Lucy explored the world together. It was a happy time, even if Katie did often insist on dressing Lucy in ridiculous outfits. Lucy loved Katie so much that she even forgave her for The Hat Incident of 2003. And then Katie married a boy named Chris and though Lucy needed some time to adjust, she eventually came to love Chris,…

The Truth Is

The truth is that since our move to Florida, things have been off for me and Chris. The truth is that I don’t know how to make this into a funny story or find a life lesson in this right now. The truth is that some nights after the baby goes to bed, we don’t talk at all. The truth is that we have more days with tension than we do without. The truth is that we are both quick to anger lately and that we don’t let any mistake…

How Motherhood is Forcing Me Out of My Comfort Zone

Being a mom has thrust me into lots of situations where I wasn’t comfortable.  There was the whole modesty issue that I had to work through.  There was getting used to cleaning up other people’s bodily fluids as they project out of their body.  There was coming to terms with staying at home with Bean.  All of these things – and countless other examples – were situations where motherhood forced me to do things that I normally wouldn’t have been comfortable doing.  But, I’ve learned that in parenting is no…
