Fighting the Sadness

We had a jumpin’ weekend here in the MC household.  My mom came down Friday night and stayed with the kids while Chris and I got gussied up and had a nice date night…  where we spent the second half of the meal in a HUGE, candlelit, whispered fight about holiday plans.  Good times.  But actually, we had been needing to have that little discussion and no matter where or when we had it, it was going to be messy.  So, might as well enjoy a little Bang Bang Shrimp…

Christmas Card-ing Like a Boss

A few weeks ago, I ordered stationary for my kids from Minted.  I raved about it here.  I was so impressed with the quality of my order that I decided to order my Christmas cards from Minted this year, too! Okay, that’s half of a fib. I was totally impressed with my order, but what really sold me on Minted for my Christmas cards was that some of you mentioned you had ordered wedding invitations from them before AND THEY ADDRESSED YOUR INVITATIONS – FO’ FREE!  I have to tell…

Christmas Recap 2012, Part One

I worried that Christmas would lose some of its magic without my dad. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could miss my dad even while celebrating a happy, joyous holiday with my family. Yet another reminder of how grief is a weird, strange beast… We had three Christmases this year. Three. And I documented it all with my real, big girl camera. Unfortunately, I totally forgot to bring my real, big girl camera cord with me to my mom’s house, so I only have iPhone pictures to…

Santa and the Rebuttal

Last night, Bean wrote his letter to Santa.  Well, he dictated it, and I wrote it down word for word. He had some pretty specific ideas that he was passionate about. Namely Rescue Heroes. (Thank goodness he mentioned this several months ago to one of Santa’s loyal elves, so I’m sure an assortment of Rescue Heroes will make it into his sleigh this year.) We left Bean’s letter on our living room table last night, and I told Bean we’d put it in an envelope and mail it to Santa this…

Christmas is Here

This past weekend, I decided that it was going to be Christmas. Like, right then. I’ve had a hard time mustering up the Christmas spirit, but this weekend I was determined to not only find my Christmas spirit, but to rock the crap out of it. I wasn’t feeling well on Saturday, so I spent the day sitting on my couch, wrapping Christmas presents and watching “A Christmas Story” a million times over and over again. I now worry that Bean is going to go to school talking about “electric…

Fa La La La… Nope.

I am a Christmas junkie.  I love it all.  I love the holy season where we celebrate Christ’s birth.  I love the silly Christmas movies.  (FRA-GI-LE…)  I love the music.  I love the lights.  I love the cookies.  I love the presents.  I love the pageants, plays and concerts.  I just love it all.  The day after Thanksgiving kicks off my Christmas season and I don’t agree to put it all away until New Years. But this year has been different. We didn’t put our tree up until two weeks…

The Big 3-0

On Sunday I turned 30. I don’t feel old, but I do feel older. 30 is just such a big number. I have been really excited about turning 30, though. Chris and I did everything in our lives so early that it kind of feels like my age is catching up to where we are. In any case, I’m ready to enjoy my 30’s. And I started enjoying it this weekend. I had a great weekend! On Saturday, I took the kids up to my mom’s house to put up…

“Oh, I’m so nervous!” Gracie squealed. “Why? What’s wrong, Gracie?” said Bean. “This is my first Christmas,” Gracie said. “What if we go into the living room and Santa didn’t leave me any presents?” “Well,” said Bean. “Have you been naughty or nice this year? Santa only leaves presents for nice kids. Is you a nice kid, Gracie?” “I just don’t know! I mean, I did cry for about four months straight when I was first born.” “Oh, yeah,” said Bean. “I remember that. You were awful, Gracie! No one…

Christmas #3: The Recap

Last Friday, we packed up the car once again and drove seven hours to Pensacola, Florida, where Chris and I grew up. My parents moved away after my sister and I graduated from high school, but Chris’s family is still there. It’s nice to have a tie back to my hometown like that, otherwise, I don’t think I’d have any reason to go back. When we go to Pensacola, we stay with Chris’s mom, Jackie, and her boyfriend/partner/male companion/humorist, Charles. Their house has two spare bedrooms and so Chris and…

Christmas #2 Recap

Hi, imaginary friends! I took a little break from blogging last week in preparation for Christmas and to spend some much needed down time with my family, especially my wee ones. I wish I could show you pictures of exciting adventures we had while I have been gone, but the truth is that we mostly sat around in Christmas pajamas, eating popcorn, wrapping Christmas presents, and watching “The Christmas Story” over and over again. (“My father wove a tapestry of obscenities that still hangs over Lake Michigan even today…”) On…
