A Boy’s World

Bean got a new bed last week.  We traded his queen sized bed (which he loved and we had to promise would be replaced with something infinitely cooler…) for a bunk bed. He and Gracie absolutely love it.  They climb all over that thing, and I constantly find myself saying to Chris, “Someone’s going to break an arm… Someone’s going to break a leg…” We are talking about really redoing his room this summer to make it into an actual big kid’s room. But for now, we are leaving the…

At the End of the Day

At the end of the day, Chris and I are drained. Work has taken a ton out of me. If I go to the gym, that takes more out of me. Cooking dinner, serving dinner, cleaning up dinner – it all takes what’s left out of me. And then there is bath time. Every night, I wonder if I have it in me to do baths. The kids had one the night before. How dirty could they be? Surprisingly, very dirty is the answer to that question. I’m not sure…

The Mystery of Fatherhood

Sunday afternoon, I had some school work to grade, so Chris took the kids outside with him to work in the yard and leave me in peace.  It was just what I needed to get caught up. About an hour later, I realized I hadn’t heard from anyone in a while, so I went outside to check on them. I stepped out onto the back deck and found all three of them standing in the yard. Each was holding their own pair of garden shears. Yes, garden shears. You know,…

Happy 3rd Birthday, Bean!

Tomorrow, June 1, is Bean’s 3rd birthday. But I’m too excited to wait the one hour and fifteen minutes to post this on his actual birthday. We are celebrating tomorrow morning with Bean’s favorite breakfast – powdered donuts! And then we’re taking Lightning McQueen cupcakes to school for a party tomorrow afternoon. Then, after school, we are packing up and heading to our hometown to celebrate with Chris’s mom and her parents, who haven’t seen Bean in a couple years and who have not yet met Gracie. We’re only there…

The Second First Bath

This past weekend we gave Gracie her first real bath. We’ve been giving her sponge baths, but she still had her little belly button nub that hadn’t fallen out yet so we couldn’t put her in a bathtub yet. But she dropped her nubby last week and so this weekend we were GO FOR BATH TIME. (Side note: How gross is the whole newborn belly button thing, right? It looks like they’ve got an ice pop sticking out of their stomach. So weird.) I remember when we gave Bean his…

Moms and Dads

From the time Bean was born, he’s had a special connection with Chris. It’s a tight bond that the two of them share. Bean knows it. Chris knows it. I know it. When he was a newborn, I was convinced that their bond was so strong because I hadn’t nursed Bean and so he attached to Chris. But as Bean gets older, I’m becoming more and more certain that the father/son bond would have been this strong between the two of them whether I was in the picture or not.…
