Eff This Healthy Shizzzz

A few weeks ago, I blogged about how I have given up certain things in my life in order to simplify and make myself happier.  One of the things I gave up was dieting.  This was stupid. I have now reached a size where I don’t even feel like myself anymore.  You know those unflattering pictures that sometimes get taken of you by accident?  The ones where you are in the peripheral or the background and you were clearly not prepared to be photographed?  You’re hunched over in the most…

10k On-the-Fly

I’m slowly getting back into running again.  I’m up to three or four times a week, and it feels so good.  Well, mentally, at least.  Physically, I’m freaking sore!  My calves are throbbing, my back is aching, and my thighs feel like they’ve been put in one of those paint shakers at Home Depot.  As my dad always said, getting old is hell!  But, I’m doing it one step at a time.  If I don’t feel like running on a day when I planned to run, then I walk.  If…

Running Out of Time

So, I casually mentioned in a blog post last week that I signed up for a 10k. And no one is freaking out about it, so I thought I would say it again to give people ample time to die laughing. I SIGNED UP TO RUN A 10K THIS WEEKEND. This is funny and terrifying on several levels. Level One – I have never run a 10k before. Ever. In fact, the farthest distance I have ever run was 8 miles. And that was at my peak last year. Level…

Running Around All Crazy Like

Well, against all odds and against everything I thought I knew about myself, I have actually stuck with this running thing.  Who knew I was so determined and athletic?  (Determined athletes still groan and moan when they roll out of bed at 6:00am for a work out, right?)  I continue to impress myself, and I think that’s important.  We should do something every day that impresses us.  It’s how we grow. The thing that I am loving about running is how it has become so much more a part of…

Dear Sarah

My best friend, Sarah, is in Michigan with her husband’s family for the summer.  I miss her like crazy.  She’s been in Canada at their family cottage for the past two weeks, which means I haven’t been able to talk to her because she’s technically “traveling internationally,” according to AT&T.  But I know she read my blog every day, so this is my attempt to reach out to her.  Because I miss her.  A lot. Dear Sarah, You’ve been gone for almost half the summer.  I miss you so much! …

The Fourth Mile

Though it is summer, I am continuing to run six mornings a week.  I’ve learned that I can go further and feel better if I alternate long runs and short runs, so every other day or so I keep my run only about a mile and a half.  On the other days, I run anywhere from three to four miles. And that’s as far as I can go. I don’t know if this is normal for a runner, but I have hit a major wall in my running.  No matter…

Better Run, Run, Run

I can usually tell how I’m feeling about life in general based on how my running is going. Right now, I can barely get my butt out of bed. I am dragging fo’ sho’. I haven’t skipped a day when I was scheduled to run yet, but I have certainly shortened my distance and slowed my pace. This morning, Sarah was going to run with me but she texted at 5:15 to say she was taking a rain check. I laid there for a while, dozing in and out of…

MamaBear 5k

This past weekend, we went to Atlanta to spend some time with my sister and brother-in-law. On Saturday morning, we got up early because John Michael and I were running a local charity 5k with a friend of mine from high school. I’ve mentioned before that I am a new runner and one of the goals I’ve set for myself is to run a 10k in November. This 5k was a little warm up just to see how I was doing with my first round of training. We met my…

MIA

I’ve had a bit of a rough week. Nothing major, just one of those times when several things come to a head at once. I’m taking two classes right now for my teaching certification, and that has added the equivalent of two college class loads to my plate. Homework is an adjustment. Not to mention school is winding down and so my students seem to be on crack. I can’t get them to settle down, and so my work days are long, exhausting days right now. Add in a few…

Yes or No

I’m reading this book called “Mile Markers,” by Lance Armstrong’s ex-wife, Kristin Armstrong. She is a runner who has a blog on the Runner’s World website and who has written several books about life through the eyes of a runner. This particular book is about the “26.2 reasons that women run.” Sarah gave it to me to read. I was a little skeptical at first because while I am continuing to run five to six days out of the week, I still wouldn’t call myself a runner and so I…
