On the Run

This weekend was pretty active for us.  On Saturday we had to run errands, so we were out of the house almost all day.  And then today we were in New York with friends.  I was a little worried about Bean.  I mean, he’s great with little bouts of excitement, but an entire weekend of going, going, gone?  It was questionable.

But apparently, I worried for no reason.  Bean was awesome.  He was laid back.  He rolled with the punches.  He chilled, man.

He was our little buddy.  Wherever we were, there he was.  He laid around in his stroller, hung out in high chairs at restaurants, laid back on couches at friend’s houses, and beat the crap out of Chris in an intense wrestling match.  He was just fun to be around.

And as if generally being just awesome wasn’t enough, Bean managed to learn a few fun party tricks.  He can now wave goodbye (and hello and basically whenever the urge to wave strikes…).  And he is now about 90% sure who “da-da” is.  You can see him looking around if Chris isn’t in the room, as he says, “Da-da?  Da-da?  Da-da?”  Or when Chris comes into the room, Bean will start up with the “Da-da, Da-Da, Da-Da…”  He still says it when he’s in the middle of a particularly fantastic babble, but you can tell that he uses it on purpose now whenever Chris is around.

I thought I’d be really bummed if Bean said Da-Da first.  I know that its easier to say than “Ma-Ma.”  I was sort of prepared.  But part of me still wanted him to learn my name first.  Its the competitive streak in me.  But to be honest?  I think I am just as excited when he calls Chris’ name as if he were calling mine.  Its some kind of validation that we are important to him.  That we are doing a good job.  That he likes us. And the order of the name-calling isn’t even important really.  Its that his first word is associated with someone that I love, and that makes me swell with love and pride until my heart just about pops.

But, dude.  When he finally does say “Ma-Ma?”  I may actually die of happiness.  Like, for real.

AJ learned da-da first also, it was a little saddening but ok, then when he did learn ma-ma, he would look me straight in the eye and say ‘da-da’. so i would say ‘i’m not da-da i’m ma-ma, say ma-ma’. then he’d look in right in the eye again and say ‘da-da’…then laugh. little booger head. 🙂

Whenever I have some face time with Rohan, I just repeat “Mama – mama – mama” over and over. He looks at me like “she is trying to tell me something important, I know it”. His face gets all quiet and serious. (I also am trying to convince him that Josh is mama too, so “mama” will be his first words no matter what.)

It won’t be for a while though… we are still stuck on “ga”.

Ava said da-da first and I remember being SO proud, My husband John was out of town and we called him and she said it over the phone to him over and over.

This was great and all but I was DESPERATE for her to say my name. Who letting you feed off her body chick, work with me here!! She refused. She said many words before she said ma-ma. I KNEW she was just being defiant and I was right, one day I was listening at her door at nap time and she was in there saying ma-ma the whole time!!! But still not to me, little brat.

Sounds like a fun weekend and it makes all the difference when the baby is happy. My son said dada before mum. At 2 & a half he still calls his dad da. Im sure Beanie will say mama soon. I love the second photo of him – he looks so adorable!
