That’s What Grandmommas Are For
This past weekend, Chris’ mom, Jackie, came to town with her boyfriend, Charles, to celebrate Chris’ sister’s birthday. We had such a fun weekend. We went out for hibachi on Friday night for Annie’s birthday dinner. Bean had been to hibachi once before and he really liked it, but on this night he was a little tired and little squirmy, so we spent most of the dinner walking around the restaurant looking at the koi ponds. But, it was late and he was tired so you couldn’t really hold it against him.
Saturday afternoon and evening Jackie came over to our house to spend some time with Bean Man. We had a great time. He taught her how to play golf and he showed her how to play in his school bus. He also shared his dinner with her and she shared her pizza with him. All in all, it was a great afternoon.
At bedtime, Jackie helped with Bean’s bath and she laughed with us as he enthusiastically brushed his teeth. Then, we all piled into the living room and Bean snuggled with his Grandmomma while we watched Ratatouille. When it was time for Bean to head to bed, I asked if Jackie wanted to put him down and she, of course, jumped right up. I gave her his current favorite books and Jackie and Bean headed off to his room.
About fifteen minutes into the bedtime routine, Chris and I started to hear giggles coming from back in Bean’s room. And then we heard toys banging around. And then we heard squeals. And more giggles.
“Doesn’t sound much like bedtime,” Chris laughed.
Twenty minutes later, we heard little bitty feet padding through the hall and whose face should pop back into the living room, all smiley like? Beanie. Followed by Grandmomma, who insisted that Bean wasn’t ready for bed yet. Even though it was way past his bedtime.
So, the two of them sat up for another half an hour, playing in the living room, reading books, and tuning in and out of the movie Chris and I were watching. When Bean couldn’t keep his eyes opened any longer, Grandmomma Jackie took him back to his room and put him to bed for real.
I think that’s what Grandmomma’s are for. They make sure you’ve hit your fun quota for the day before bedtime. Luckily, when Grandmomma Jackie comes to town, it’s easy to reach that.

What would we do without ’em? They’re always so eager to play endless games and change all the diapers. I need a grandma to move in with me…

Lucky for both of them that you are not the uber-controlling type that I, quite possibly, was.

Wow, I can tell she is Chris’ mom!
And I am 25 and my grandmother is still there to fill my fun quota. She always will be 🙂

You can tell I’m preggers. I’m sitting at my desk at work trying to not to fall asleep so I log in here for a pick me up and cry through both of your sweet posts. Haha I’m a mess 🙂 We’re telling our parents next weekend (we haven’t seen them yet and I want to tell them in person…2 more weeks!!) and I can’t wait for them to know they’ll be first time grandparents. I know they won’t have any trouble filling the fun quota. 🙂

Grandmomma’s really are the best! I had some of the best times with my grandparents, and would not take anything in the world for that! I love how you asked if she wanted to do the bedtime routine! I know it made her weekend!

I think everybody should stay up until they’ve hit the daily fun quota.
I mean, what else are laws for, right?

Some of the best fun moments are the ones had outside the “rules” or the “schedule” – how is it that even one year olds know that getting away with something is part of the fun?!

Cute! Chris mum sounds a a fun grandmomma – lucky Bean!

Oh – i ment to say its alright to break the rules sometimes 🙂

I never really accepted when people told me how spoiled I was by my Grandparents, and still am. That was until a Great Grandbaby came along. I see it now. I cannot wait for my parents to become Grandparents. I know my Dad will be the ultimate rule breaker!

I don’t think grandparents know what bedtime is. But that’s okay. It’s fun to get spoiled now and then!

What a blessed Bean to have someone to keep close tabs on his fun quota! Looking forward to my mom taking that role for our Peanut, too 🙂

That’s so sweet!! We’re in Oklahoma this week and Q-Tip hasn’t made it to bed at her bedtime once…not once! But…we’ll survive I suppose. I just pray we don’t have a two week detox time once we get home!!
🙂
