5 Little Moments

1. Twice a week, I sit in my van for an hour while Gracie goes to tennis lessons.  Bean stays in the van with me.  And it is torture for both of us.  He is bored.  I want to read.  He is fidgety.  I want to sit quietly.  He is eight.  I am thirty-four.  Those are becoming the two longest hours of my week.  Bean agrees. 2. At church this past weekend, I was waiting outside the restroom for Gracie in the children’s building and I noticed this sign on…

Horrible Parenting: Exhibit A

Oh, friends.  I messed up royally this past weekend with Bean.  I have felt horrible for days now and try as I might to tell myself that these things happen, I just can’t shake the guilt. On Friday, we were out of school because of the hurricane, and a friend asked if Bean could come over to swim in the afternoon.  He had been over there for a few hours when the friend’s mom texted and said the boys wanted Bean to spend the night and was that okay with…

First Day of School, 2017

IT’S THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which, at least for the time being, is super exciting around my house. One day, I’m sure this will not be such a happy day for them, but I’m going to soak up their excitement for as many years as I can. Both kids were up and completely dressed by 6:30 this morning, all on their own. Which is a far cry from just last week when I was came home from preplanning most days around 4:00 to find them still in their jammies.…

Catch Ups and Weekends

Last week I was back in school for preplanning and it basically kicked my butt.  I started to regret my afternoon naps and staying in my pajamas all day during the summer because I was not physically or emotionally ready to be awake, alert, and productive for that long.  Holy cow.  But I wasn’t the only one preparing to go back to school.  The kids had “Meet the Teacher” and were both really happy with the teachers they got.  They were also happy to see their friends again. This weekend…

Regretting My Summer

I love teaching and I would do it whether we had summers off or not, but I do love having that time every year with my kids.  Summers have always been my favorite time of year.  I love the beach.  I love the pool.  I love lazy mornings and late nights.  I love leaving the house to run one or two errands and finding ourselves out all day long just on a whim.  And I’ve always been pretty good at summering.  For as schedule-driven as I am during the school…

A Simple Summer Craft: Book Chains

Last week on a rainy afternoon, I pulled out the ol’ craft supplies and gathered the children around to sing songs and make shit. Hahaha!  Just kidding. But we did make a cute little craft called a Book Chain.  I had the kids cut construction paper into strips. We measured out one-inch strips using a ruler.  You can do this for them, but I needed this particular craft to fill a good chunk of time while I got some chores done in the kitchen, so I made them cut the…

Family Theme Nights

We try to have some kind of family-themed night just about every Friday in our house.  It’s a nice way to end the week and the kids really look forward to them.  They talk about them and plan them all week long.  After busy weeks (and lazy days during the summer), it’s nice to be able to connect with each other for a while as a whole family.  Usually, we have dinner at the kitchen table together and then we go down to the family room and let the games…

A Different Kind of Summer

In the first few weeks of summer, I quickly realized that this summer would be… different.  For one thing, Bean and Gracie are starting to separate themselves from each other in some ways.  Not that they don’t still play together all the time or not get along anymore; they are still best buddies and, thankfully, get along really well.  But their ages and genders have just now started to separate them a little bit.  For example, I signed them both up for gymnastics camp for a week because they have…

Raising Stubborn Children (named Gracie…)

My mom gave Chris and I the very best piece of parenting advice ever when the kids were about two and three years old.  She said that she and my dad spent a whole lot of time teaching and disciplining when Ginny and I were really young so that they could enjoy the time with us when we were a little older.  Chris and I took that advice straight to heart and it became our mantra through the really tough ages and stages of having two little kids.  We were…

I Was Mean Girled by My Own Daughter

We are heading to the Keys for a week-long vacation soon, and so I loaded the kids up late last week to head over to Target for the dreaded bathing suit purchase.  Can we all agree that fitting rooms are the devil?  The lighting makes me look like an eskimo, the three-paneled circus mirrors make my stretch marks (which I still have, six years later, thankyouverymuch children…) look like deflated balloons, and the super thin partition walls make it easy for everyone to hear me crying.  The experience simply can’t be…
