A Keto Update
I have been on Keto for almost three months now and am down a total of 26 pounds. I dropped more than that at one point, but I gained a few back as a result of frequent travel for work. For information about how I started my keto journey, check out this blog post.
The past two weeks, though, I have not necessarily fallen completely off the wagon, but I’m definitely sitting on the back of the wagon with my legs hanging off the side… I haven’t been strictly keto, but I have been low carb. Mostly, the difference has been adding back in some fresh fruits and veggies. That summertime produce is juicy and sweet and too tempting to resist! I think of it more like Weight Watchers, where carbs from fruits and veggies don’t count against me right now. That is definitely NOT the keto way, but it has been a nice compromise for my two week break.
I’m still doing pretty good with avoiding straight up sugar and processed foods. Although, we went to the movies and I enjoyed a bag of Twizzlers way more than I ever have in my entire life. 🙂 My latest dessert favorite has been cups of strawberry sugar-free Jell-O with two tsp of Cool Whip on top. It is the best summer treat and satisfies my sweet tooth. So does watermelon, which has a shocking amount of carbs in it (22 carbs per slice, y’all!). I’m trying to eat it sparingly, but they are so good right now in Florida!
My other splurge over the past two weeks has been sandwich wraps and soft taco shells. I have just about saladed myself out, so switching to wheat wraps for sandwiches and soft tacos instead of taco salads has been a nice little break. I try to avoid the chips that usually come with the soft tacos, but I did accidentally devour a basket of chips and queso the other night when we went out to eat. I’m not quite sure what happened. I remember feeling guilt and then I blacked out and woke up with queso covered lips and a broken chip in my hand… so strange.
The good thing is that even with these little changes to my diet, I have managed to stay pretty consistent in my weight. I fluctuate in a three pound range on a daily basis, which I feel is pretty consistent and steady. But I am pumping myself back up to get onto keto again hardcore after the 4th of July. I have 15 more pounds to lose to get to my goal weight that I set at the very beginning of this journey and I’ve still got my eye on the prize. However, prize or no prize, I plan to face plant some ice cream and hot dogs on the 4th… I’m pretty sure that’s a law, right?
Another change I have made lately is trying to add in some physical activity with my diet. Having lost so much weight, it’s time I start toning up all this droopy skin! So, I am trying to swim, walk, or bike every day to help close my exercise and my steps rings on my watch. It’s so hard, though, because it’s crazy hot here right now. My car said it was 100 degrees this morning at 10:30! Getting out and moving around in those temps feels like you are wading through oatmeal outside. Yuck! But, I keep reminding myself about how good I feel when I take care of myself and so hopefully that will help keep me motivated to move.
All in all, I’m still really liking the keto/low carb life. I love the food, I feel like there is a lot of variety, and I stay full all the time. My energy levels tend to go up and down, but I’ve noticed that has a lot to do with my water intake, so I have been making a point to keep that up. Let’s hope this next round of strict keto can help me kick these last 15 pounds as quick as I lost the first 25!
