5 Little Moments

1. Twice a week, I sit in my van for an hour while Gracie goes to tennis lessons.  Bean stays in the van with me.  And it is torture for both of us.  He is bored.  I want to read.  He is fidgety.  I want to sit quietly.  He is eight.  I am thirty-four.  Those are becoming the two longest hours of my week.  Bean agrees. 2. At church this past weekend, I was waiting outside the restroom for Gracie in the children’s building and I noticed this sign on…

First Day of School, 2017

IT’S THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which, at least for the time being, is super exciting around my house. One day, I’m sure this will not be such a happy day for them, but I’m going to soak up their excitement for as many years as I can. Both kids were up and completely dressed by 6:30 this morning, all on their own. Which is a far cry from just last week when I was came home from preplanning most days around 4:00 to find them still in their jammies.…

Blooming

A few weeks ago, Chris and I took the kids to the hardware store to get some supplies for our kitchen renovation.  Did I tell you we were renovating our kitchen?  Apparently, we are.  It was an accidental renovation, though, that started with a simple conversation: “I need a project,” Chris whined one Saturday morning. “What about painting the kitchen?” I responded harmlessly. And the next thing I knew, this was happening in my kitchen. In case you can’t tell, that’s Bean putting a hammer through our kitchen ceiling. Demo…

A Different Kind of Summer

In the first few weeks of summer, I quickly realized that this summer would be… different.  For one thing, Bean and Gracie are starting to separate themselves from each other in some ways.  Not that they don’t still play together all the time or not get along anymore; they are still best buddies and, thankfully, get along really well.  But their ages and genders have just now started to separate them a little bit.  For example, I signed them both up for gymnastics camp for a week because they have…

Raising Stubborn Children (named Gracie…)

My mom gave Chris and I the very best piece of parenting advice ever when the kids were about two and three years old.  She said that she and my dad spent a whole lot of time teaching and disciplining when Ginny and I were really young so that they could enjoy the time with us when we were a little older.  Chris and I took that advice straight to heart and it became our mantra through the really tough ages and stages of having two little kids.  We were…

I Was Mean Girled by My Own Daughter

We are heading to the Keys for a week-long vacation soon, and so I loaded the kids up late last week to head over to Target for the dreaded bathing suit purchase.  Can we all agree that fitting rooms are the devil?  The lighting makes me look like an eskimo, the three-paneled circus mirrors make my stretch marks (which I still have, six years later, thankyouverymuch children…) look like deflated balloons, and the super thin partition walls make it easy for everyone to hear me crying.  The experience simply can’t be…

Hello, Summer!

Today was the last day of school for our family.  Hallelujah!  I woke up super early just so I could have time to get these pictures taken, which involves scouring all my computer files to locate the little signs that I have used for the past few years.  Can you see the 2015-2016 year on them?  I tried to mark it out with a gray marker this morning because who has time for Photoshop (and also because I don’t know how to use Photoshop… Summer goal:  learn how to use…

Double Trouble

The older kids get, the harder it is to keep a straight face when they are in trouble.  AmIright???? The other day, we were driving down the road and they were getting on my last nerve.  They had been in one of those playing hysterically moods where their “fun” can quickly become “murder charges” in the blink of an eye.  I had been getting onto them to leave each other alone, to settle down, to keep their hands to themselves…  Blah, blah, blah… Finally, I reached the last straw and…

Spirited Child Update

Wow!  You all gave me such great insight and ideas yesterday in how to deal with Bean and some clues as to maybe why he is acting out.  I think the majority consensus was that this is part of this age (thank goodness) and that being consistent and in communication with him will help us all get through it (thank goodness).  I’m so glad to know we aren’t the only ones riding this struggle bus right now.  Thanks for the encouragement, imaginary friends! I figured since I updated things on…

#Fatherhood #DammitChris

Last night, I was tucking Gracie into bed when she turned her big, baby blue eyes up to me and said, “Mommy, are monsters real?” “Oh, no, sweetheart,” I said, gently brushing her hair back from her face.  “Monsters aren’t real.” She let out a worried little breath and smiled up at me. And then Chris stuck his head in her bedroom door and said, “Except for the ones under your bed,” and then he laughed and left. #fatherhood #dammitChris So, I spent the next five minutes trying to fill…
