I’m Becoming My Mother

Growing up, there were things my mom did that I just could not understand in my juvenile, young adult mind.  In fact, I didn’t understand them fully until I became a mother myself. She rode in the car without music on.  This used to drive me crazy.  She would never turn the radio on.  In my young mind, I could not fathom how you could drive around all the time without music blaring in your ears.  And then, a few months ago, I was driving around with music blaring in…

Recital Pictures So Cute, It Might Break the Internets

You. Guys. Gracie had her tap recital this weekend.  Holy cow.  Cute doesn’t even begin to cover the extent of the pink, fluffy, adorableness in these pictures. As you all know, Gracie is quite the riot.  She is feisty, energetic, loud, and bossy…  But only really in our house with our family.  When she is in school or out somewhere with friends, Gracie tends to be more on the shy side.  And these pictures capture that so well. Look at her sweet little face.  She looks terrified.  And she really…

Happy 5th Birthday, Gracie Girl!

We have been counting down for this birthday since the day after she turned four.  Tomorrow, Gracie Girl turns five years old!  “A WHOLE HAND!” as she has reminded us for at least the past six months.  I interviewed Gracie last night about the excitement of her birthday, and I love this video because you can see so much of her personality in it.  Plus, I love to watch her talk.  It never gets old to me.  I could listen to her talk for hours.  That girl cracks me up.…

Half-Assed and Sassy: I’m Back!

(tap, tap, tap) IS THIS THING ON????? (tap, tap, tap) Well, kids.  I just couldn’t stay away.  Turns out, when you’re a writer – even a kitchen table one – you miss writing.  Who knew?! I stepped away for almost a whole year from this bloggity-blog and freelance writing, and what a wonderful decision that has been.  I have stretched myself into whole areas of my family’s life that I wouldn’t have been able to plug into if I had continued blogging.  I’ve become the Den Leader of Bean’s Cub…

The Man I Didn’t Marry

When we were in high school, I loved him because he didn’t care what anyone thought.  He didn’t care what he should or shouldn’t do.  And I loved him for that freedom because when I was with him, I felt free, too. In college, he began to love me as an adult.  Not a perfect adult (are there any perfect adults?), but in that “I will love you for the rest of my life” way.  And I loved him for that promise of what was to come. In the earliest…

#oneword2015

Hello again, imaginary friends! I missed you so while I was away, but I did enjoy a much needed break from my blogging grind stone.  I have been soaking up time away from work and responsibilities and just focusing on playing with my kids, spending time with my sweet hubby, and hanging with my family.  It has been refreshing and renewing for my mind, body, and soul, let me tell you. I’ll post about what shenanigans were had over our Christmas break soon, but the New Year has been on…

The Hardest Part of Kindergarten

I was somewhat prepared for Bean starting kindergarten this year.  I read a few articles about it online, talked to some friends who had been through this before, and reminded myself that Bean was fully prepared to face this next milestone.  But nothing prepared me for the hardest part of kindergarten I have had to face. My husband. Chris is having the hardest time adjusting to Bean being in kindergarten.  I think he feels like Bean is too young or small or something to be dealing with all of this.  Of…

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

First of all, let me thank you for the outpouring of support yesterday!  You all made me feel much better and gave me some confidence about stepping up for my kids.  In answer to a lot of your comments, I received an email last night from the principal thanking me profusely for my email and asking for a description of the staff member so that the incident would not be repeated with other children.  I am really glad Bean is attending this school and I know that this is not…

Sideline Momma

Last week, I took the kids to the Downtown Disney splash pad. It’s one of our favorite summertime places. We went early in the morning (before 9:30) to avoid the summer Disney traffic. But since it was the week after Fourth of July, the crowds were a little slimmer. That’s actually a good insider tip for Disney. Plan your vacations the week AFTER a holiday. Most people come during the holiday week, so the lines are a lot shorter in the parks the following week. I’m still trying to learn…

Family Photo Prep Time

This coming weekend, we are meeting with the fabulous Jenn Hopkins for our annual family portraits. To be honest, every time we have done these, I have not thought about them until, like, the day before the session and then frantically tried to pull everything together from our closets so that we looked somewhat coordinated. This was in 2011. Look at my babies! And will you please look at Gracie’s chubby little legs and Bean’s sweet little baby face?!?! I die! This was from Gracie’s newborn shoot… Oh, Lord. My…
