Summer Supplies at the Dollar Store

We are still actively using our game closet on a daily basis around here.  Never more so than in the summertime.  The trick to maintaining this closet, I have found, is to keep rotating through the toys and activities.  Even if the kids outgrow an activity from the closet, I still keep it in there.  You never know when a set of wooden blocks will be needed for a superhero fortress, and we have used counting monkeys as armies, paper weights, dive toys, students in a classroom, and the list…

Celebrating a Five Year Old in Style!

Michael turned FIVE last SUNDAY, people. FIVE YEARS OLD! How did this HAPPEN!?!? My womb is saddened by this news.  She feels old and useless.  And old.  And empty.  But mostly old. We had a hard time figuring out what to get him for his birthday this year.  We thought about a scooter, like Gracie got for her birthday, but he didn’t really want one of those.  We asked if he wanted a new bike since he is getting so tall for his, but he wasn’t too excited about that…

Making the Dollar Store Work for Teacher Gifts!

This year, we have seven teacher gifts to give.  SEVEN.  That is one drastic downside of daycare.  There are so many teachers to thank!  Gracie has three alone in her classroom, and then Bean has two in his.  But I’m also giving gifts to Bean previous two teachers since he had them for more than half the year (and since I love them so much!). Seven gifts adds up to a lot of money.  I would love to be able to spend $20 or even $30 on one significant teacher…

Basic Meal Planning

Occasionally, I post pictures of various parts of my meal planning process on Instagram.  Inevitably, I get people who want to know more about my meal planning process.  I’m always hesitant to blog about meal planning because I’m afraid what I do might not be complicated enough to really be considered “meal planning.”  The phrase alone sounds like you need some kind of healthcare or nutrition degree to put one together.  But I do consider what I do to be meal planning, and it does save our family money and…

#MCreads

I was sitting in a meeting this afternoon next to a new young teacher.  He can’t be more than 22 or 23 years old.  I was waiting for the meeting to begin, and while I waited I sat with my nose in a book, as usual.  He politely asked what I was reading, and when I told him a little bit about it, he kind of snorted and went back to sorting through emails.  “I don’t have time to read,” he said smugly.  “There’s too many important things to be…

Christmas Card-ing Like a Boss

A few weeks ago, I ordered stationary for my kids from Minted.  I raved about it here.  I was so impressed with the quality of my order that I decided to order my Christmas cards from Minted this year, too! Okay, that’s half of a fib. I was totally impressed with my order, but what really sold me on Minted for my Christmas cards was that some of you mentioned you had ordered wedding invitations from them before AND THEY ADDRESSED YOUR INVITATIONS – FO’ FREE!  I have to tell…

Christmas 2013: Part One

This year, I tried something new with my Christmas shopping.  I spent September and October buying all the kids presents.  I am basically finished with their Christmas now, which leaves me the month of November and December to get everyone else done.  I thought I’d share what we’re getting the kids this year, since I actually got my act together before the week of Christmas for once! Christmas this year for the kids is all about replenishing and replacing things in our game closet.  I’ve blogged about our game closet…

Freshly Minted

A month or so ago, I went to a birthday party for my sweet college roommate’s daughter.  After the party, Neal’s daughter (via his even sweeter wife, Kylie, I’m sure) sent me a thank you note for attending.  AND IT WAS WRITTEN ON HER OWN STATIONARY!  I loved that! (That’s me and Neal.  We survived four years of college together, and now we’re both trying to survive parenthood, too.) Because I was on the look out for stationary for my own kids now, I was super excited when Minted.com reached…

Giveaway Winner and Bedtime

It was the first day of school for me today. I welcomed 120+ students into a new school year, and, let me tell you, that is some exhausting work! I am BEAT! And I wore super cute shoes, but I am not used to being in wedges again so my feet are swollen and blister-y tonight. A small price to pay, though. I needed the coral shoes to tie in my coral cardigan… duh! Bean had his first day of preschool today, too. He was so excited to start. Chris…

Tried and True Baby Products: Day Five

If you’ve been around these parts for any amount of time, then you’ve met my sister, Ginny.  Ginny and I are only 14 months apart in age and, over the years, our friendship has grown incredibly close as we navigate marriage, family, and parenting together.  As close as we are, though, Ginny and I raise our babies in slightly different ways that work best for our families.  I am learning to love that about our friendship.  She has some great perspectives and thoughts on parenting, and I’ve learned a lot…
