Fall, You’re Late to the Party

I love seeing people’s pictures of fall on my Instagram and Facebook feeds.  I obsess over chunky, soft sweaters, warm, leather boots, orange and red foliage, and even Starbucks cups filled with pumpkin spiced whatever (even though I am not a coffee drinker, not a Starbucks customer, and not a pumpkin spice fan…). But, alas, fall is only a season of my dreams because I live in Orlando. It’s been so dang hot here in Orlando, it’s not even funny.  One day a few weeks ago, we woke up to…

5 Little Moments

1. Twice a week, I sit in my van for an hour while Gracie goes to tennis lessons.  Bean stays in the van with me.  And it is torture for both of us.  He is bored.  I want to read.  He is fidgety.  I want to sit quietly.  He is eight.  I am thirty-four.  Those are becoming the two longest hours of my week.  Bean agrees. 2. At church this past weekend, I was waiting outside the restroom for Gracie in the children’s building and I noticed this sign on…

Big God. High Peaks.

We are halfway through the first quarter of school and I am happy to report that I am finally hitting my groove at my new school.  I’ve gotten to know my students and absolutely adore them.  I’m getting involved and meeting other teachers, which means my days aren’t as lonely as they were in the beginning.  But my favorite part, without a doubt, is living in the same community where I teach. There are definitely some setbacks to this.  The week of the hurricane, our family ventured out into the…

Hurricane Irma

This past Sunday, Hurricane Irma hit Orlando with a vengeance.  Thankfully, we had enough time to prepare, but we weren’t exactly sure what we were preparing for.  We knew we were going to get hit, but didn’t know if it would be a direct hit as a category 3 or 4 or if Irma would come up the state and hit us as a category 1.  For a while there at the end of last week, we weren’t even sure which side we would get hit on – from the…

First Day of School, 2017

IT’S THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which, at least for the time being, is super exciting around my house. One day, I’m sure this will not be such a happy day for them, but I’m going to soak up their excitement for as many years as I can. Both kids were up and completely dressed by 6:30 this morning, all on their own. Which is a far cry from just last week when I was came home from preplanning most days around 4:00 to find them still in their jammies.…

Bugs and Rodents and Our Growing Petting Zoo

So, guess what we got… That’s, right, friends. Meet Gus Gus, our adopted longhaired hamster. Now, before you freak out (like my husband did…), let me tell you that I have been lobbying for a hamster or guinea pig for the kids for almost a year now. So, this might seem like a last minute decision, but it has been on the discussion table for quite a while in our house. And when my sweet friend, Jessica, mentioned that her girls had outgrown their pet hamster, I jumped on the…

Blooming

A few weeks ago, Chris and I took the kids to the hardware store to get some supplies for our kitchen renovation.  Did I tell you we were renovating our kitchen?  Apparently, we are.  It was an accidental renovation, though, that started with a simple conversation: “I need a project,” Chris whined one Saturday morning. “What about painting the kitchen?” I responded harmlessly. And the next thing I knew, this was happening in my kitchen. In case you can’t tell, that’s Bean putting a hammer through our kitchen ceiling. Demo…

Family Theme Nights

We try to have some kind of family-themed night just about every Friday in our house.  It’s a nice way to end the week and the kids really look forward to them.  They talk about them and plan them all week long.  After busy weeks (and lazy days during the summer), it’s nice to be able to connect with each other for a while as a whole family.  Usually, we have dinner at the kitchen table together and then we go down to the family room and let the games…

Sushi, Scavenger Hunts, and Summer Night Shenanigans

This past holiday weekend, Chris was itching for a project.  Originally, I suggested that we paint the kitchen.  This, of course, led to an entire kitchen renovation, which is still ongoing.  More on that good time later… But Saturday night, we needed to make a trip to the hardware store to pick up one little thing for the kitchen project, so we decided to grab dinner at our favorite sushi place first and make a night of it.   We’ve taken the kids here before and they love the chicken teriyaki…

A Different Kind of Summer

In the first few weeks of summer, I quickly realized that this summer would be… different.  For one thing, Bean and Gracie are starting to separate themselves from each other in some ways.  Not that they don’t still play together all the time or not get along anymore; they are still best buddies and, thankfully, get along really well.  But their ages and genders have just now started to separate them a little bit.  For example, I signed them both up for gymnastics camp for a week because they have…
