Parenting Mistake #2,659: Video Games

Parenting Mistake #2,659: Video Games

For Bean’s seventh birthday this past June, we made a big step and bought him a Disney Infinity.  I’m not a video game person.  I didn’t grow up with them in our house.  Chris did, but he wasn’t that into them.  But, neither of us were morally opposed to our kids playing video games.  We thought, like anything else in life, in moderation, it would be fun.  And it has been.  Bean LOVES having it. I thought the issue with video games would be the actual games themselves.  But we…

Gracie in Home Depot

Gracie in Home Depot

Chris had to run to Home Depot this past weekend, and in the interest of creating quality family time, I insisted that we all go along.  This always happens.  And it always proves to be an epic failure for a few key reasons:  Chris takes forever at Home Depot. Chris doesn’t talk to us while he is there.  He muses things over in his head, or counts imaginary measurements out loud, or mumbles about things I don’t understand and no one cares about. Chris takes forever in Home Depot. The kids…

My First Spin Class

My First Spin Class

You. Guys. I joined the YMCA in our neighborhood, which means I joined an actual gym.  EEK!  The Y in our neighborhood is like a country club.  Seriously.  It’s the prettiest Y I ever did see.  It has a great pool area for the kids, including a splash pad and giant water slide.  It has swim lanes for laps and swim team (which Bean is going to join in two weeks!).  It has a huge, beautiful work out floor with gorgeous racquetball courts, rooms for classes, and even a rehabilitation…

How to Pack for the Beach

How to Pack for the Beach

We are beach regulars.  During the summer, I try to get out there with the kids about once a week.  Though, they are revolting this week and refuse to go.  What sticks in the mud.  Anyway, after a few summers of beaching it every week, I have become somewhat of a packing ninja. The first thing you have to do is realize that sand is going to get everywhere.  EVERYWHERE.  I used to hate the beach.  I grew up on the beach and still didn’t like it that much.  I much…

Summer Moments

Summer Moments

There’s not much to report from these parts lately.  We’ve been doing a lot of this… Which is one of my favorite things to do, so no complaints here. I had to get out of the pool long enough to go to a teacher workshop this Monday and Tuesday. I’m a nerd because I love workshops and trainings. They get my mind going 90 miles an hour. We did some intense planning for next year, and I was just beside myself over a crisis I am calling, “Planner Crisis 2016.”…

When Bean is Away…

When Bean is Away…

For Bean’s 7th birthday, my mom took him on a trip to Washington, D.C.  They are having a blast, and I’ll share details about their trip once they get home and I can hijack my mom’s camera.  For now, she is sending me pictures on her phone every few hours, and I can just see the pure joy on Bean’s face.  It’s his first trip away from home without us, and so far, I think we miss him much more than he misses us! But no one misses Bean more…

A Perfect Father’s Day Fore Us All!

A Perfect Father’s Day Fore Us All!

On Father’s Day, the kids and I took Chris golfing.  It was the first time we have played as a family of four on an actual course, and not just at the driving range. I was a little skeptical at first.  I mean, golf is everything my kids are not – polite, quiet, contemplative, old.  And yet, they rocked it and had a blast in the process! I learned so much about them on the golf course, actually.  For example, I learned that baseball has completely ruined Bean’s golf swing….

Eff This Healthy Shizzzz

Eff This Healthy Shizzzz

A few weeks ago, I blogged about how I have given up certain things in my life in order to simplify and make myself happier.  One of the things I gave up was dieting.  This was stupid. I have now reached a size where I don’t even feel like myself anymore.  You know those unflattering pictures that sometimes get taken of you by accident?  The ones where you are in the peripheral or the background and you were clearly not prepared to be photographed?  You’re hunched over in the most…

Why We Cancelled Our Family Vacation

Why We Cancelled Our Family Vacation

I’m supposed to be camping in the mountains right now.  Did I tell you about that?  Back in March, Chris and I decided that it would be super fun to take the family camping just outside of Gatlinburg the first week of summer vacation.  For several weeks, I pinned every Pinterest pin possible (say that five times fast) about what to do with kids in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.  I even came up with a little schedule for our vacation. And then May and June happened. I don’t know about you,…

Summer Fail.

Summer Fail.

Yesterday was the first, real, official, full day of summer in our house.  I had big plans.  BIG PLANS.  I made a summer schedule, a summer bucket list, and a list of home projects I wanted to complete.  I WAS READY. And then I failed horribly. Here is what I did yesterday: The dishes The laundry (I just folded what has been sitting in my bedroom in baskets for two weeks now.  That counts, right?) Cleaned out the refrigerator Took Daisy to the vet (Spoiler Alert: She’s huge and healthy.)…
