Hello, Summer!

Today was the last day of school for our family.  Hallelujah!  I woke up super early just so I could have time to get these pictures taken, which involves scouring all my computer files to locate the little signs that I have used for the past few years.  Can you see the 2015-2016 year on them?  I tried to mark it out with a gray marker this morning because who has time for Photoshop (and also because I don’t know how to use Photoshop… Summer goal:  learn how to use…

Chasing the Cruds Away

Thursday morning, I had a horrible headache, which is really uncommon for me.  By Thursday night, my throat was itching, and by Friday afternoon, I had a fever.  Yuck.  I came home Friday and slept from 7:00 that night (even skipping dinner!) until 8:00 the next morning.  And I STILL woke up feeling like I needed another good 12 hours sleep.  Fevers always make me tired. I spent Saturday morning at Bean’s baseball game, which was nice.  The weather was beautiful and it felt great to be outside in the…

Where is Summer?!?!

Spring has arrived in central Florida.  Our windows have been open almost every afternoon and the breeze is just cool enough to keep the humidity away.  Which means that I have been straightening my hair lately.  I feel like a grown up when I straighten my hair.  Except that it is freakishly long when it is straight, which makes me look a little bit like Michelle Duggar.  I try to balance that look out with tight shirts and short shorts. Just kidding. Although, I did accidentally buy the wrong length…

My Keys to Happiness

Last week at the gym, I tried listening to a podcast instead of music while I was running.  I didn’t like it.  I need the beat of the music.  But, the podcast I listened to was really interesting.  It was a TedTalk on the study of happiness.  This guy had done research and found that people were happier when they were focused on the task at hand, even if it wasn’t a task they were particularly fond of.  When minds wander, we become less happy, according to the study. Considering…

Summer of Books

This summer has been my official “Summer of Books.”  Last year, I really dragged my feet on reading.  I think the year was more focused on learning to balance having TWO kids with extracurricular activities, and there wasn’t much time left for reading.  But, I think I have found the scheduling balance (for now…) and so I have deemed this the summer that I get back to reading. I use GoodReads.com to track my reading (user name: KatieMC).  My favorite feature of the website (and app!) is that you can…

Parenting Mistake #2,659: Video Games

For Bean’s seventh birthday this past June, we made a big step and bought him a Disney Infinity.  I’m not a video game person.  I didn’t grow up with them in our house.  Chris did, but he wasn’t that into them.  But, neither of us were morally opposed to our kids playing video games.  We thought, like anything else in life, in moderation, it would be fun.  And it has been.  Bean LOVES having it. I thought the issue with video games would be the actual games themselves.  But we…

Gracie in Home Depot

Chris had to run to Home Depot this past weekend, and in the interest of creating quality family time, I insisted that we all go along.  This always happens.  And it always proves to be an epic failure for a few key reasons:  Chris takes forever at Home Depot. Chris doesn’t talk to us while he is there.  He muses things over in his head, or counts imaginary measurements out loud, or mumbles about things I don’t understand and no one cares about. Chris takes forever in Home Depot. The kids…

My First Spin Class

You. Guys. I joined the YMCA in our neighborhood, which means I joined an actual gym.  EEK!  The Y in our neighborhood is like a country club.  Seriously.  It’s the prettiest Y I ever did see.  It has a great pool area for the kids, including a splash pad and giant water slide.  It has swim lanes for laps and swim team (which Bean is going to join in two weeks!).  It has a huge, beautiful work out floor with gorgeous racquetball courts, rooms for classes, and even a rehabilitation…

How to Pack for the Beach

We are beach regulars.  During the summer, I try to get out there with the kids about once a week.  Though, they are revolting this week and refuse to go.  What sticks in the mud.  Anyway, after a few summers of beaching it every week, I have become somewhat of a packing ninja. The first thing you have to do is realize that sand is going to get everywhere.  EVERYWHERE.  I used to hate the beach.  I grew up on the beach and still didn’t like it that much.  I much…

Summer Moments

There’s not much to report from these parts lately.  We’ve been doing a lot of this… Which is one of my favorite things to do, so no complaints here. I had to get out of the pool long enough to go to a teacher workshop this Monday and Tuesday. I’m a nerd because I love workshops and trainings. They get my mind going 90 miles an hour. We did some intense planning for next year, and I was just beside myself over a crisis I am calling, “Planner Crisis 2016.”…
