Summer Supplies at the Dollar Store

We are still actively using our game closet on a daily basis around here.  Never more so than in the summertime.  The trick to maintaining this closet, I have found, is to keep rotating through the toys and activities.  Even if the kids outgrow an activity from the closet, I still keep it in there.  You never know when a set of wooden blocks will be needed for a superhero fortress, and we have used counting monkeys as armies, paper weights, dive toys, students in a classroom, and the list…

Household Tricks That Keep Me Sane

Almost from the day Gracie was born, I knew that in order to manage a household with two small children, organization was going to be key. It has taken me several years to figure out what kinds of organization systems work for our family, and I continue to add to and adjust how we keep our house as the needs of our family changes. But today I thought I would share just a few every day tips and tricks we use around our house to keep ourselves relatively neat and…

Clutter Begone: Couponing

I started couponing this summer when our income was reduced while I wasn’t teaching. I never intended to become one of those extreme couponers. I don’t have the time, patience, or… patience. But I did want and need to do something to help us save what we could. The first thing I did was register for a Target RedCard. Since I do all my grocery shopping and about 95% of any other shopping at Target, it just made sense to get their rewards card. There are two kinds of cards…

Clutter Begone: Household Paperwork

Two years ago when I had my little breakdown and hid under my covers for about six months, Chris took over paying our bills as a way to help me out. It was a HUGE load off of me. I was having trouble letting go of things, and money problems were a big stone I carried around in my pocket. Chris taking over the reins was a big switch for us. I’d handled our daily finances since we were married (we have always and still do make our family budget…

Summer of Organization: Activity Closet

Last week I decided to tackle a big summer organizational project that has been on my mind since we first moved into this new house. When we moved in, we sort of randomly assigned closets for purposes. A linen closet here, another linen closet there, a medicine/first aid/paper products closet over there. Now that we’ve been in the house for a while, though, we are starting to find better places for things and better purposes for our closets. I knew that I wanted and needed an activity closet for the…

Summer of Organization: THE TOYS!!!!!

TOYS!!!! STOP THE TOYS!!!! ALL THE TOYS!!!! I really never thought that we overdid it with our kids and toys. I don’t feel like we are always giving them new things. Actually, we hardly ever get them new things. Really, it’s holidays and birthdays that refresh and replenish the toy supply at our house. It is very rare that we just randomly bring home a new toy. And yet toys have taken over my entire house. We have a toy box in the living room, but that quickly filled up…

Organize Me

My New Years resolution was about being healthy and I’m doing a pretty good job with that one. I’m avoiding sweets and haven’t had a Diet Coke since…well…Monday. BUT! Before that I hadn’t had one in WEEKS, I tell you! I’m going with the general rule of thumb that when presented with two options, I will choose the healthier. And life hasn’t been as awful on that path as I expected. Along the way through 2012, though, I seem to have picked up a second resolution that I hadn’t planned…
