Confessions of a Laundress

Sometimes I do laundry, like a responsible adult.  I wash it, dry it, fold it, and put it away all in the same day.  Sometimes I even do multiple loads on the same day. Sometimes, I wash a load of laundry, move the load over to the dryer, and then put on “The Notebook” and forget about the clothes in the dryer until Monday morning comes around and we are all naked. Sometimes, I wash a load of laundry, move the load over to the dryer, and then even remember…

Life Changing

If you should know anything about me, know this:  Laundry is my nemesis. Laundry and I do not get along.  I neglect it and in turn it multiplies like rabbits and takes over my entire existence on this earth.  I often ask myself how our laundry situation gets so bad.  I mean, there are two and a half of us.  How could we possibly generate this much laundry?  It just ain’t natural. But I’m coming to realize that most of our laundry isn’t clothing.  It’s all that other stuff.  It’s…

The Sacrificial Laundry Wench

Laundry is my nemesis. It’s like the house guest that just won’t leave. I stumble over it.  Climb over it.  Cry over it. And, yet, it continues to sit there in gigantic piles and taunt me. I know what the problem is, too.  It’s my laundry room.  And I’m using the term “room” here very loosely.  See, in this house, our laundry room is outside in the garage.  Which means that in order for me to do laundry, I have to leave the air conditioned interior of my house and…

The Great Laundry Crisis of 2009

When I started this humble blog a little over a year ago, one of my first posts was titled, “The Great Laundry Crisis of 2008.”   It was about how laundry had taken over my life.   How it sat in piles around my tiny apartment.   How it taunted me and shamed me. I believe my exact words were that it was an act of God. A lot has changed in the past year.   I got my masters.   I bought a house. I had a baby.  …

The Maverick of the Laundry Room

When I went away to college, my mom sent me with a few simple rules. 1.   Don’t take a drink from someone you don’t know. 2.   Don’t overdraft your checking account. 3.   Go to class. 4.   Don’t use anything but cold water when you do your laundry. My mom knew that I was less than a domestic goddess and, quite frankly, warm water was beyond my capabilities in the laundry room.   To hit her point home, she spent my last few weeks at home lecturing…

The Laundry is Back

It is happening again. Laundry is taking over my bedroom, my house, and my life. I literally have run out of clothes. I have been accused once or twice in the past of crying wolf when I say I have nothing to wear (usually while staring into my closet busting with clothes – some with the tags still on them, but that’s a different post). But this morning, I woke up and for the first time in my life I actually, literally, honest to God had not one pair of…

Breaking Up and Breaking Down

Our washing machine is breaking down. It hasn’t broken completely yet, but it is in the process. You can turn it on, but it won’t run a full cycle. I’m having a hard time dealing with this. Everyone knows of my love/hate relationship with laundry (See The Great Laundry Crisis of 2008). My relationship with laundry is a lot like marriage, actually. In the beginning, when I was just starting out on my own in college, it was fun – even exciting – to do my own laundry. I would…

The Great Laundry Crisis of 2008

Here’s the thing – before I got married I loved to do laundry. On my Facebook page, laundry used to be listed as one of my interests. Thats how much I liked it. I considered it an interest. I like going through all my clothes, making them clean again, folding and putting them back in their proper places. That’s just good clean fun. Then I got married to a dirty boy and it all changed. Now, Chris is not a smelly dirty boy. He actually smells pretty fantastic when he’s…
