He Still Makes Me Smile
Chris ran to Walmart tonight to pick up a few things we needed. Its always a crap shoot what you’ll get when Chris goes shopping by himself. The things he comes back with always make me wonder how he even got into the department where a product came from. One time, he brought home a bag of frozen shrimp. Not that this is necessarily a strange thing, but we don’t usually – or ever! – have frozen shrimp in our house. But that night, he wandered by and thought that bag of frozen shrimp was exactly what we were missing in our lives. On more than one occasion he has brought back a bag of cookies or a box of ice cream cones. And sometimes he finds more useful things, like Glade candles or fire started logs when we lived in Connecticut. Its not necessarily that these things are uncommon purchases. Its just that they certainly aren’t on the lists that I send with him.
But last night, Chris came home with a little something extra…for me.
Now, we all know how rare it is for Chris to bring me flowers without me begging for days on end beforehand. So, imagine my surprise when these beautiful flowers walked in our house last night.
But we soon realized that flowers were tricky because all of our glassware is boxed and packed up until we move into a permanent home. Chris and I searched high and low for something to hold the flowers. Our cups weren’t strong enough to hold the flowers without falling over. My iced tea pitcher was too big and the flowers just flopped around in them.
And that’s when Chris disappeared into the kitchen for a while. When he came out a few minutes later, he had made me a vase by cutting the top off of a 2-liter bottle.
Now, I realize that this isn’t really blog worthy. Men bring their wives flowers all the time. And soda bottles are used for a variety of things. But in my house, it was pretty extraordinary.
And it made my day.

nice job, chris.

I agree – definitely blog worthy! You guys are such a great couple, and a great example of a working marriage. Reading your blog definitely make me feel like I’m not alone in the ups and downs that a marriage can encounter (and I mean that in a really really great way). Thanks!
Kara
I LOVE the term ‘working marriage’! That pretty much sums it up. It is a lot of work but can be so beautiful!
Elizabeth
He’s a keeper!
Michelle
What a sweetie 🙂

Where’s the like button? I like this!!! 🙂

My husband’s the same way! Except Dave will gets random, more expensive versions of the things on the list. One time I had pancake mix on the list and he came home with a collectible ceramic tin of some brand of biscuit mix I’d never heard of; and of course it was twice the price of regular ol’ Bisquick! So I started making grocery lists that included brand names:) It’s always a crap shoot with him!
Jessica
Awww that is very sweet. It is blog worthy because it is important to you and thus it is important to us!
Kara
I’ve fired my husband from going to the grocery store alone…several times! They pick up the most random stuff and he always spends $50 more than I would have! Chris did a good job!!!
Caitlin
Who gets flowers all the time? I think that is super sweet (and resourceful)!
Maggie
It’s even sweeter that they are in a 2-liter bottle if you ask me! Agreed on the unsupervised shopping…it usually just results in phone calls like, “Why am I here again?” or “Do you know what aisle that’s in?” or “Did you know dish soap was this expensive? Are you sure we need it?” Oh well, as long as they redeem themselves with flowers and homemade vases…

Totally blog worthy. My husband has never bought me flowers, ever, since the day I met him. LOL
Christina
How sweet of Chris to buy you flowers just because. That’s the best reason to get flowers! Great problem solving Chris!
Julia
Go Chris! what a sweetheart! Do you think he would be available to tutor our less thoughtful boyfriends?!!
Jen at Cabin Fever
That’s so nice and flowers like that can even make a 2 liter bottle look classy!

How sweet!!!

Totally blog worthy. What a sweet gesture from your husband! I know flowers can brighten up a bad day instantly. Especially when they are a surprise.

SO sweet.

Very Blog Worthy!
Way to go Chris! Flowers just because, who knew!? Is it more satisfying without all the begging? (although, your readers LOVE all of your begging and card suggestion posts!)
Elizabeth
It is certainly blog worthy! How wonderfully sweet of him to bring you flowers!
Katy
How sweet!! Great job, Chris!

I would say that is blog worthy… i don’t remember when i got flowers ‘just cause’… since those are the best kind of flowers.
Erin
Good Job Chris! I actually miss it, my husband brought me a rose for every month on our “anniversary” for the first few months after our wedding, I think he stopped around month 4 🙁 haven’t gotten flowers since. But he did buy me diamonds for Christmas so that’s okay!
Jennifer
Chris is adorable and definetly a keeper 🙂 Good job Chris
Casey
Totally blog worthy! My hubby hardly ever brings home flowers… so when he does, it is extra extra special!
MistyK
I hate getting flowers for ‘occasions’. They loose the specialness somehow, but that might just be me. However, when you get flowers out of the blue for no other reason then ‘because’ it means the world.
And if i was you, id be saving that 2 liter vase as a symbol of the good in the midst of the bad.
Good Job Chris!
Brooke
It is blog worthy because it is meaningful in your life, your life that you so graciously share with us. This unexpected expression of love will most likely be a time you remember forever.

Definitely blogworthy, definitely adorable. I would feel the same way. I love my guy but he really struggles with gifts or surprises without a lot of coaching. So when he does soemthing really sweet or fixes something up to “make-do” like Chris did with the soda bottle vase, I really appreciate it and feel loved. Good for you guys!
Abigail
Wait, what husbands bring flowers home all the time?! My husband just gave me (in march) flowers for the first time since we got married!! And that’s 5 years! So kudos to Chris and it totally is blog worthy!
Betty
That is so thoughtful! And honestly (not to show how ignorant I am or anything), but if you hadn’t told me it was a 2 liter bottle, I would never have known!
savannah
I definitely just said “awwwww” out loud. Can I borrow him to train my boyfriend?
Kate
How nice! I love that he not only provided the flowers, but Macgyver-ed a vase too…he’s a keeper!

Hehehe — This made me smile! Way to go, Chris! And definitely agreed on the “men going shopping” situation. My fiance hardly ever goes alone, but I can’t even bring him with me anymore unless I want to end up buying random expensive (& not to mention unhealthy) snacks that we absolutely do not need! Guys….can’t live with ’em…can’t live without ’em…
Christina
Love it! What a thoughtful, sweet gesture. The flowers are beautiful! So colorful. 🙂
Definitely blog-worthy. It brightens everyone’s day.
Maybelline
so sweet of him..!

aww how cute…I completely understand….I have to beg too. My husband just doesn’t get the whole flower thing. Sigh. This post gives me hope…maybe someday.
Megan
Perfect…absolutely perfect!
