A Halloween First
Halloween has never really been our thing. It’s fun and we love the candy, but dressing up and pumpkin carving and staying up past nine o’clock? Eh…
For the past few years, we’ve dutifully gotten the kids costumes and taken them trick-or-treating, but that’s really been it. And that was okay because the kids were too little to really know what was going on anyways.
(Bean even wore the same costume two years in a row because I accidentally left his Buzz Lightyear costume at school last year… #fail)
(He was also apparently a dinosaur for three years in a row and I only JUST NOW realized that when I put these pictures together… #doublefail)
But this year, the kids are older and so I have insisted that we go through all the normal Halloween activities like all other normal families. And first on my list was a pumpkin. We have never bought a real pumpkin and carved it before as a family! Isn’t that insane?!?!
This past weekend we didn’t make it to the pumpkin patch, and so I begged and pleaded and tried to make it happen one weeknight this week as a family, but Chris just would not cooperate. So, I packed the kids up and took them myself to get a damn pumpkin last night. Then, when Chris got home from work, we carved them together. I got Bean and Gracie smaller pumpkins, and we got one big family pumpkin to carve.
I gave the kids markers to decorate their pumpkins while Chris and I carved the big one. It wasn’t until I saw Chris start to carve into the pumpkin without digging out the insides that I realized – CHRIS HAS NEVER CARVED A PUMPKIN IN HIS LIFE BEFORE!!! Oh my goodness! I had no idea! He didn’t know what to do! So, I showed him how to cut the top off and dig out the guts, which was way more disgusting than I remembered it being.
Then, I drew the face and he did the cutting.
The kids had a great time, and Chris and I did, too!
Chalk another victory up for new family adventures! Who knew?!??!

Oh my gosh. I’d forgotten about Bean in his lion costume! That’s made my day. Ooohhhh I can’t believe how grown up your children are getting! xx

Cute punkins! (The human kind and the vegetable kind :). Just a quick tip: stock up on the pumpkin knives when they are on sale this week. They are great when you are just starting to let kids help with cooking and they are just learning to use knives, because they are much safer and much easier to hold than normal knives. When I was a kid we used our (many) pumpkin knives year round.

My husband had never carved one either! We turned that around 🙂 And great tip on the knives, HeatherM!

I am embarrassed to admit that I, too, have no idea how to carve a pumpkin. I believe I will need a lesson in this before next year when Aubrey is old enough to know better 🙂

And on the other end of the spectrum, this is the first Halloween we haven’t carved a pumpin in yeeeaaaars. I miss the roasted pumpkin seeds!
