Everyday

Everyday when Bean and I get home from school, we unload both our backpacks and then we head out to the driveway.

Everyday I sit in a lawn chair while Bean collects acorns in a giant plastic pretzel tub.

IMG_5897

Everyday he sits in the driveway for what feels like hours, painstakingly collecting acorn after acorn.

IMG_5901

Everyday he fills his plastic pretzel tub, insisting on putting the lid on the tub after each and every acorn is delicately placed inside the tub so that no acorns spontaneously jump out when he’s not looking.

IMG_5902

Everyday he collects acorns until there are enough to make a loud noise when he swings the tub around and when he feels the balance is just right with the universe, he then dumps out his acorn treasures right there onto the driveway.

IMG_5907

Everyday we then count how many acorns he has collected and after we get to three, Bean gets bored and walks away, leaving me to count by myself.

IMG_5910

Everyday after collecting and dumping and collecting and dumping, Bean moves from the acorns in the driveway to the acorns on the sidewalk.

IMG_5896

Everyday he plops himself down and begins collecting brand new acorns.

IMG_5918

And everyday he usually finds at least one sidewalk acorn that is good enough to share with Mom.

IMG_5916

Everyday there is usually not plumber’s crack involved in the collecting of acorns, but on the days that there is I giggle and giggle until Bean looks at me and says sternly, “No,” and so I stop giggling.

IMG_5912

Everyday we wait for the Big Moment when Daddy’s car pulls into the driveway.

IMG_5921

Everyday he gets out of the car and pretends to be surprised to find us there.

IMG_5923

Everyday he says, “Well, what are you guys doing out here today?” and Bean shows him the acorns he has collected.

IMG_5924

Everyday Bean tells Chris everything that happened at school as they stand right there.

IMG_5930

And everyday Chris chases Bean back up the driveway when their conversation is finished.

IMG_5939

Everyday Chris catches Bean, who thinks this is the most fun game in the whole world.

Before we had Bean, I worried that having a baby would change us too much. That we would lose that spontaneity that we loved. I worried that our lives would become routine and boring and that they’d be the same thing day after day. And to a certain extent, that has happened.  But I have to tell you that everyday I learn that routine can sometimes be such a blessing when it involves people you love.

Every single day when I come home, I know I am the luckiest woman in the world. And that’s a pretty good routine to find yourself living.
