Go, Go, Go, STOP.

Oh, friends.  What a wonderful problem I am having right now.  ClassMax is doing so incredibly well.  So much better, so much earlier than we expected.  Which is AMAZING and we are so grateful for this weird journey we are on, but it has thrown us for quite a loop here in the homeland.  Our days are full and our nights are even busier as we work to enter the next phase of development for ClassMax, which only leaves those precious afternoon hours of shuffling kids from one place to…

5 Little Moments

1. Twice a week, I sit in my van for an hour while Gracie goes to tennis lessons.  Bean stays in the van with me.  And it is torture for both of us.  He is bored.  I want to read.  He is fidgety.  I want to sit quietly.  He is eight.  I am thirty-four.  Those are becoming the two longest hours of my week.  Bean agrees. 2. At church this past weekend, I was waiting outside the restroom for Gracie in the children’s building and I noticed this sign on…

Wheat Rice and Pillow Talk

Last night I served asparagus, salmon, and brown rice to my family. It went over about as well as you can imagine.  But the worst offender was CHRIS!  THE ADULT.  I kept giving him threatening eyes across the dinner table every time he almost made a joke about dinner.  Finally, he couldn’t help it anymore when Bean grimaced as he ate a piece of asparagus. “Nobody likes asparagus,” he told Bean.  “We all eat it just because our mom’s make us.” I rolled my eyes and made everyone (including Chris)…

First Day of School, 2017

IT’S THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which, at least for the time being, is super exciting around my house. One day, I’m sure this will not be such a happy day for them, but I’m going to soak up their excitement for as many years as I can. Both kids were up and completely dressed by 6:30 this morning, all on their own. Which is a far cry from just last week when I was came home from preplanning most days around 4:00 to find them still in their jammies.…

Bugs and Rodents and Our Growing Petting Zoo

So, guess what we got… That’s, right, friends. Meet Gus Gus, our adopted longhaired hamster. Now, before you freak out (like my husband did…), let me tell you that I have been lobbying for a hamster or guinea pig for the kids for almost a year now. So, this might seem like a last minute decision, but it has been on the discussion table for quite a while in our house. And when my sweet friend, Jessica, mentioned that her girls had outgrown their pet hamster, I jumped on the…

Honey Harvest Day!

I shared a while ago that my mom has become a beekeeper in the past year.  She has two hives that are out in the middle of a wildflower field and a peach orchard, which means she gets peach honey at certain times of year and wildflower honey at other times of year.  I go through her honey like crazy and am now using it almost always in cooking and baking instead of sugar.  It has so many health benefits!  Plus, it’s yummier than store-bought honey because the store-bought usually…

A Simple Summer Craft: Book Chains

Last week on a rainy afternoon, I pulled out the ol’ craft supplies and gathered the children around to sing songs and make shit. Hahaha!  Just kidding. But we did make a cute little craft called a Book Chain.  I had the kids cut construction paper into strips. We measured out one-inch strips using a ruler.  You can do this for them, but I needed this particular craft to fill a good chunk of time while I got some chores done in the kitchen, so I made them cut the…

Family Theme Nights

We try to have some kind of family-themed night just about every Friday in our house.  It’s a nice way to end the week and the kids really look forward to them.  They talk about them and plan them all week long.  After busy weeks (and lazy days during the summer), it’s nice to be able to connect with each other for a while as a whole family.  Usually, we have dinner at the kitchen table together and then we go down to the family room and let the games…

Sushi, Scavenger Hunts, and Summer Night Shenanigans

This past holiday weekend, Chris was itching for a project.  Originally, I suggested that we paint the kitchen.  This, of course, led to an entire kitchen renovation, which is still ongoing.  More on that good time later… But Saturday night, we needed to make a trip to the hardware store to pick up one little thing for the kitchen project, so we decided to grab dinner at our favorite sushi place first and make a night of it.   We’ve taken the kids here before and they love the chicken teriyaki…

A Different Kind of Summer

In the first few weeks of summer, I quickly realized that this summer would be… different.  For one thing, Bean and Gracie are starting to separate themselves from each other in some ways.  Not that they don’t still play together all the time or not get along anymore; they are still best buddies and, thankfully, get along really well.  But their ages and genders have just now started to separate them a little bit.  For example, I signed them both up for gymnastics camp for a week because they have…
