Honey Harvest Day!

I shared a while ago that my mom has become a beekeeper in the past year.  She has two hives that are out in the middle of a wildflower field and a peach orchard, which means she gets peach honey at certain times of year and wildflower honey at other times of year.  I go through her honey like crazy and am now using it almost always in cooking and baking instead of sugar.  It has so many health benefits!  Plus, it’s yummier than store-bought honey because the store-bought usually…

A Simple Summer Craft: Book Chains

Last week on a rainy afternoon, I pulled out the ol’ craft supplies and gathered the children around to sing songs and make shit. Hahaha!  Just kidding. But we did make a cute little craft called a Book Chain.  I had the kids cut construction paper into strips. We measured out one-inch strips using a ruler.  You can do this for them, but I needed this particular craft to fill a good chunk of time while I got some chores done in the kitchen, so I made them cut the…

Family Theme Nights

We try to have some kind of family-themed night just about every Friday in our house.  It’s a nice way to end the week and the kids really look forward to them.  They talk about them and plan them all week long.  After busy weeks (and lazy days during the summer), it’s nice to be able to connect with each other for a while as a whole family.  Usually, we have dinner at the kitchen table together and then we go down to the family room and let the games…

Sushi, Scavenger Hunts, and Summer Night Shenanigans

This past holiday weekend, Chris was itching for a project.  Originally, I suggested that we paint the kitchen.  This, of course, led to an entire kitchen renovation, which is still ongoing.  More on that good time later… But Saturday night, we needed to make a trip to the hardware store to pick up one little thing for the kitchen project, so we decided to grab dinner at our favorite sushi place first and make a night of it.   We’ve taken the kids here before and they love the chicken teriyaki…

A Different Kind of Summer

In the first few weeks of summer, I quickly realized that this summer would be… different.  For one thing, Bean and Gracie are starting to separate themselves from each other in some ways.  Not that they don’t still play together all the time or not get along anymore; they are still best buddies and, thankfully, get along really well.  But their ages and genders have just now started to separate them a little bit.  For example, I signed them both up for gymnastics camp for a week because they have…

A Soggy, Slumber Party Birthday

This weekend, we celebrated Bean’s birthday with a few of his friends.  He invited five friends over on Saturday night for pizza, a movie, and spending the night (well, except for his longtime bestie, Layla, who is a girl, so we dropped her off at her house after the movie).  Their parents dropped them off at our house at 5:00 and we had pizza and birthday cake.  Then, we loaded the kids up in our cars and headed out in the rain to see the new “Captain Underpants” movie. It…

Happy 8th Birthday, Bean!

Yesterday Bean Man turned 8 years old.  He was lucky this year and his birthday happened to fall on the first day of summer vacation, which was a coincidence that definitely needed to be celebrated.  So, our family spent the afternoon at Disney and Bean set our entire itinerary. He just finished reading the first book of the “Kingdom Keepers” series, which is an adventure series that takes place in the parks of Disney World.  The first book is set in the Magic Kingdom, so that’s where Bean wanted to…

Bulk-Order Lingerie

Before I go into this saga, let’s lay some ground rules.  If you know me in real life, we will not speak of this information I am about to divulge.  However, a small fist bump in acknowledgement of my struggle will be allowed.   Also, if you are a male and we know each other, go away.  This ain’t for you and if you fist bump me about this one day, I’ll fist bump your face.  Okay, now that that is settled… A few weeks ago, I bulk ordered bras and…

Double Trouble

The older kids get, the harder it is to keep a straight face when they are in trouble.  AmIright???? The other day, we were driving down the road and they were getting on my last nerve.  They had been in one of those playing hysterically moods where their “fun” can quickly become “murder charges” in the blink of an eye.  I had been getting onto them to leave each other alone, to settle down, to keep their hands to themselves…  Blah, blah, blah… Finally, I reached the last straw and…

Teacher Friends Are the Best Friends

I’m not usually one to put teaching above any other profession.  Every job is different and taxing in complete unique ways.  If I stood in your shoes, I might not make it until lunch on a regular work day.  If you stood in mine, you may murder a teenager before 2nd period ended.  To each their own.  But, let me tell you, I would put teaching up against any job as being one of the most exhausting career paths. We plan lessons and track data, of course.  But the real…
