Footsie
“Dude.”
“What is it, Beanie?”
“Something weird is going on below my ankles.”
“Those are your feet,” I said. “Remember we talked about those a couple weeks ago when you were sick?”
“Oh, yeah!” said Beanie. “So, these things talk, huh?”
“That’s not all they do,” I said. “You use your feet to walk.”
“Walk?” said Beanie. “You mean you’re not going to just carry me everywhere for the rest of my life?”
“No way, Beanie! You’re heavy!”
“Well, if I’m heavy then how are my feet supposed to hold me up?” he asked.
“Your feet are super strong, Beanie,” I said. “They will hold you up your whole life. So be sure you take good care of them.”
“Hmm…” he said.
“What is it, Beanie?”
“Well, what if I didn’t want to use my feet all the time? What if I wanted you to carry me my whole life?”
“Oh, that’s so sweet, Beanie. But you’re going to go lots of places in your life that I won’t be able to take you.”
“Like where?” he asked.
“Well, like college. Or your first job,” I said.
“You can’t take me those places?”
“No, Beanie. I can’t,” I say. “But I’ll stand beside you every step of the way.”
“Okay,” he said. “I guess my feet will just have to do.”
“Yep,” I said. “I guess so.”

How cute is Beanie!? He looks like he loves his little Bumbo seat. I have heard those things are the best.

Awww, he is SO cute!
I just wanted to give you a reminder about those Bumbo chairs. They are great for teaching babies to use and build their head and neck muscles. But they are only supposed to be used on the floor (for the very high risk of falling), and only for about 10 minutes at a time (because otherwise they also teach babies bad posture).
I’m a Pediatric ICU nurse, and I have seen more tragic and scary head injuries in babies than I would ever care to have seen- and many were due to carelessness and accidents. Remember, babies have “soft spots” because their skulls are not yet fused so they are at a higher risk for severe head injuries. Also, their heads weigh more compared to their bodies, so they are very “top heavy” in chairs in general.
Take good care of that adorable boy of yours!
Katie
Thanks, Nurse Heather!

I love the bumbo

Porter’s legs are so incredibly chubby that we can’t actually lift him out of the Bumbo–one of us has to lift him out while the other one hold onto the seat!
Doesn’t look like Beanie has that problem!
Katie
And to think – Porter was the preemie and Beanie was the fatty!!! 🙂

Yeah, keep telling him about using those feet! I didn’t walk until I was 18 months because everyone held me all the time. Can I go back to those days? They were kinda nice!
