Bean and the Kitten

Chris and his sister, Annie, grew up in a cat house.  They had kittens and cats all the time.  Their house was next to a national park and so they always had cats running away to those woods and when that happened, it wasn’t long before they’d have another one.  Or another five.  Cats rotated through that house faster than I could count.  Both Annie and Chris and even Chris’ dad are insistent that one of their neighbors (who, admittedly, was a weird, weird woman) sacrificed them in some sort of ritual.  I don’t know about all of that, but whatever was going on, it wasn’t good for cats.

A few weeks ago, Chris’ sister got a second cat.

Don’t worry, she now lives here in Orlando and there have been no signs of neighbors who are interested in sacrificing cats in her current neighborhood.

Anyway, Annie got a little kitten that she named Loki, after the god of mischief in Norse mythology.

Annie’s a smartie fartie.

Isn’t he pretty?

I’ve never actually been a big cat fan.  Chris though loves cats.  He had one in college named Shadow.  That cat was of the Devil.  If anything should have been sacrificed, it should have been Shadow.  That darn cat (does anyone remember that movie?!?!) would climb up doors and sit on top of them silently and when you walked by, he would jump on you.  I hated that cat.

So, whenever I see particularly playful kitties, I am haunted by the memory of that stupid Death Kitty.

But Loki was pretty cute.  And when he played, he wasn’t out for blood.  Which I appreciate in a cat.

Bean seemed to be in Chris’ camp on the cat love thing though.  He loved Loki.

Loki was unsure he returned Bean’s affection.

What Bean was not so crazy about was Annie’s older cat, Bo.  Especially when Bo cornered him.

“H-H-Heeeey, Kitty,” said Bean.

“Be a good kitty and I’m…just…gonna…”

“…RUNAROUNDYOUREALLYFAST!”

“I’M ALIVE!  I’M ALIVE!”

The rest of the night, Bean played with the kitten.  He was more his size.

So, the verdict from last night was that we will not be getting a cat.  At least, not anytime soon.  For one thing, with two dogs, a toddler, a husband, and Elvis and Costello, there are enough living things in my house at the moment.  For another thing, Bean and Chris would terrorize a cat.  And lastly, I don’t need anything else in this house that sheds.  Molly and I have that market covered.

But, it’s great to have Aunt Annie to let us come play with hers.

As long as they aren’t sacrificed anytime soon…

Loki looks just like my Archibald when he was a baby. Kittens and kids are fun, but they also carry diseases like ringworm from their mama. (It’s not really a worm. I don’t know why they call it that.) Some kid showed up at school with ringworm a few weeks ago and, lo and behold, he had just gotten a kitty. They also are good pouncers and scrachers, which makes me nervous with Nate, since he moves pretty fast too.

    Nevertheless, I want a kitten. Someday we’ll get one….

I grew up without pets in the house. When I met my partner, she came into the equation with her 2 year-old cat — who didn’t like me very much from the start as I was a stranger. Eventually she grew to like me when she found out that I would give her food and clean the litterbox.

Years later she was not happy when we brought a baby into the house. First of all, the baby was now in HER room, which she saw as a slap in the face. But then it was making noise and sudden movements. Ultimately she became scary to our son so she wouldn’t be disturbed. Since then (he’s 7 now) they’ve made their peace, but they’re better in separate rooms.

But we inherited a new cat as well when our kid was 6. Those two play very well together. I guess it depends on knowing where one’s territory lies. 🙂

Kudos to you on (a) the very cool monkey shirt bean is wearing; our son had the same one! and (b) naming your lizard friends Elvis and Costello.

I loved That Darn Cat when I was little, now that’s a classic. And I’m with you on not feeling the love of cats – sure, some are lovely, but some will act all nice, then turn on you without a second though.

    Cats are like terrorists.

    Man, that’s deep.

Okay, not really. Still, if you’re cross-stitching a pillow, I’ve put for my saying suggestion.

I hear ya’ on the shedding thing. We don’t have any animals in the house because it’s bad enough to have my hair every where. I don’t something else that is worse than me to clean up after….

I am with you, I am not a cat person. Don’t get me wrong they are cute and it is really hard to say no to that cute little kitten but I just don’t want to keep up with a litter box.

  • Kate

The pics of Bean and Bo in a stare-down are just too darn cute! Cats are much cuter in pictures than in real life though – too much fur to clean up!

  • Annie

The funny part about that night was, while you guys told me you wanted Bean to come play with Loki..I knew it was really just Chris who wanted to 🙂 We’ve just have cats for too long in our family..Maybe when you’re in a bigger place you can get Chris a kitten 🙂

    haha Shadow! From Homeward Bound!
Ever since I was little and saw that movie, I’ve wanted an American Bulldog (like Chance from the movie)

FI and I aren’t really cat people either- except for my godparents cats- they’re really fun! But we’re more dog people

Ew I now have cat nightmares! I was once stuck in my cousins house in the room where the cat slept. He jumped on my bed and STARED at me all night! I’m pretty sure he came up to my ear and whispered, “Ima killllll you Katie! Ima killl you!”

I love cats. I have two. Batman and Captain Morgan (he only has one eye). They love everybody and never attack. They just purr and knead. My husband was not a cat person until I got Batman. Now, he carries him around the house like an infant and calls him “little baby”….despite the fact that he’s a full grown cat. Its different when you raise them from kittens!

The pictures of Bean cornered by Bo had me laughing out loud: ) So cute! You could tell exactly what he was thinking just by looking at his cute little face.

My parents inherited a devil cat named Shadow also…must be in the name.

Note to self- refuse to associate with anything named Shadow.

  • Niki

Beautiful kitties. I adore cats and have three of my own. As well as a toy poodle, which some say are more like cats than dogs, but mine is very much a dog with the barking and the fetching and the chasing of our cats. 🙂

  • Katie

So weird: my grandparents also had a cat named Shadow. She was also the Devil. Seriously, she would hiss at anyone who came near, and was generally evil. Maybe it’s in the name…?

  • Sarah C. H.

Haha, I’m not a cat person either. I like them, I just don’t want one. Thank goodness my husband is the same way but I dread the day that our future children say, “Mommy can we get a kitty?”

  • Diana @ A Little Bit of Life

My cat, Cadillac, who happens to be bigger than Lucy (16 lbs 13 oz) enjoys beating the living daylights out of my husband’s pitbull Blue. I feel that it mimics my relationship with the hubby since we know who is really in charge! 🙂 I’m hoping the Jellybean we have on the way gets along with both the cat and the dog!

  • Mindee@ourfrontdoor

I would get a new kitten every year, I love them so. But that would make me the crazy cat lady so we just have two and they grew up so they aren’t as much fun anymore.

    Maybe just one more . . .

  • Courtney

Cute cat. I think you’re right though, 2 dogs, a toddler and a husband (ok and the lizards) are enough for one house right now, at least till you guys move.

  • Beanie's Nana

The expression on Chris’ face in that first pic looks exactly like Beanie. I’ve seen him have that same expression and I was shocked to see it on Chris’ face. Like father, like son.

  • Kristin

I love my cats! They are all very social and friendly (well, except for the feral one, but we don’t count her). But, I must admit that the best part about being pregnant is that the husband has to handle the litter box. 🙂

  • Tressa

LOVE Bean man’s facial expressions when he is trying to get by Bo. CUTE CUTE!

I’m not in the cat/kitten camp at all….never

  • Megan

We aren’t so much cat people here either. It’s kind of weird though…my grandparents live on a farm and when I was little they had cats out the ying yang. Barn cats…nothing inside. Anywho…I was obsessed with them! I spent hours and hours and hours playing outside with those cats. And now…I’ve apparently developed some skin allergy towards them and I wouldn’t want to live with one.

But they are fun to play with some times.
