Goal Setting for 2020

Before I chose passion for my #oneword in 2020, I knew there were priorities in my life that I wanted to make sure I incorporated more in the new year. These were areas of my life that I had let slip in 2019 as I focused on professional growth. I didn’t yet know how these things were related, but I knew that there were eight elements that I felt were missing and wanted to get back to in 2020.

In no particular order, they are:

  1. Writing
  2. Meditation
  3. Growing teachers
  4. Planning
  5. Encouragement
  6. Leading
  7. Family experiences
  8. Playing with Chris

Each of these areas fill my spirit and soul with passion. They ignite me and help me produce fruit in all other areas of my life. Some of them have always been important to me, but some of them surprised me by continuously creeping into my thoughts over the past month as I prepared for a new year. Usually when that happens, it’s the Lord nudging me into places and experiences, so even though I don’t think meditation, encouragement, or leading would be on my list if I were writing it out myself, I can’t leave them off when I hear that whisper in my heart.

That whisper is actually what helped me choose my Bible verse for the year, too. A few years ago, I started adding a Bible verse to guide my year along with a #oneword. This year, my verse is Romans 11:29, “For the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.” Which basically means when the Lord calls, I ain’t got no choice, y’all. And these are the eight areas that kept calling out to me over the past month of reflecting. These are the things I have been given a passion to pursue. I am certain that there will be big things happening in these eight areas this year.

True to my planning roots, I spent the past few weeks thinking through each of these areas and praying over them in order to determine what God wanted me to DO with them. It’s a great list, but what now?!

Actually, I have no idea! hahaha! I was hoping you guys did! hahaha!

I’m in the middle of writing our strategic plan for ClassMax right now and so my tendency has been to format this personal list in the same way that document is structures. I thought about setting goals and then objectives for each goal, but that seems a bit too formal and rigid. Instead, I have settled on this outline format that I keep dropping ideas into. (Side note: A better blogger would probably fix this up into a cute, free printable that you could use, too. Too bad you follow a slacker blogger…)

I’ve been thinking I might want to find some kind of goal tracker or planner or something like that. I’ve thought about PowerSheets, but haven’t committed because of the cost since I don’t even know if I would use them. I found some free templates on Pinterest (search “goal planning template” or “goal tracker”), which are alright, but nothing has really jumped out at me yet. I’ll probably just create one myself in Google. I’ll share it with you, if I do.

What do you guys do? Any suggestions for personal goal setting and tracking? Help me!

I am using the Commit30 planner this year (as soon as it gets delivered). My word of the year is EXPLORE because it has so many possible applications. I’m starting next weekend by exploring my limits by running my first half marathon at Disney.

Explore is one of my favorites! So versatile and limitless! And thanks for the Commit recommendation. I’ll have to look into that one, too.
