I Bake. Sort Of.

Last weekend I tried baking homemade brownies from scratch.  It didn’t go well.  It never goes well.  In my soul, I know I’m not a baker.  I know that I just don’t have the precision to be a baker.  I’m more of a “pinch of this” and “dash of that” kind of kitchen goddess.

Recipes are not my thing.  Directions and measurements are not my thing.

Recipes are made to be broken.

You wanna know your first hint that I’m not a good baker?  Check out my work station.  And keep in mind that this was supposed to be a one-bowl recipe.

You never see messes like this on the Food Network.

And I won’t even try to tell you what I looked like.  I couldn’t take a picture of it because I was too dirty to pick up my camera at that point.  But lets just say that my apron was helpless.  Hopeless.  It did what it could, but I think it knew I was a lost cause.

Another reason I’ll never be a good baker is because I’m a peeker.

I’m a peeker.  I don’t wait for the timer.  I don’t do the toothpick test.  I just open the oven every 10 minutes and stick my finger into whatever it is I’m baking.  Not too effective.  Not to sanitary either.  Actually, I should apologize to all past dinner guests.

Sorry I stuck my finger in your food.

Eh.  Well.  What am I gonna do?  Good thing Chris doesn’t really have a sweet tooth and I like Oreos better than homemade just about anything.  Isn’t it great when things work out like that?

    They sure looked delicious!!

I do stuff from the box, because I’m so OCD when I follow recipes that I take FOREVER. it’s like I think the world might end if I don’t get every step and ingredient EXACTLY right!

    How did these brownies taste?

I also like to be ‘free-spirited’ with my measurements. I made pancakes when my sister was in town last week. The batter turned out very very thick-more like pizza dough. she asked if i’d made them before, i said, ‘yeah, but they come out different every time’. more fun that way.

They look VERY tasty! Just wait til Beaner cries while you are trying to make supper! I’m totally not a peeker; I want everything just right!

I just started baking this past year since we moved to Florida. I started with chocolate chip cookies, and wouldn’t stop until they were perfect! I’d bake loads of them until one day I was just…done. *lol* I haven’t decided what I’m going to move onto next, but my Dad has requested I learn to make homemade yam pie before Christmas. 🙂
