Whatever Gets You Through the Day(care)

Today was Bean’s third day at daycare.  Each day gets better and easier for both him and me.

On the first day when I dropped him off, he cried and cried all day long.

On the second day, he cried for a little bit but his teachers were really fantastic.  They started singing their “Good Morning Song” really loudly to distract him while I left that morning and when he started crying, they just sang louder until Bean was so curious about what they were doing that he finally walked over to see what all the commotion was about.

I know all of this happened because I was plastered to the small window in the door and would immediately fall to the ground whenever Bean looked over in my direction.

I do this because I am as determined to make this separation as hard as possible for everyone involved.

Today when I dropped him off, I let Bean walk into the room on his own like a big guy instead of holding him.  And he walked right in, but then he realized where we were and he started to panic a little bit.  But, once again, his teacher was right there.  I kissed Bean and made my quick getaway and when he started crying, she picked him up in a huge bear hug and nuzzled into his neck until he wasn’t crying anymore.  He was actually smiling a little bit.  Then she gave him Mr. Bear and she carried him over to the cubbies and talked to Bean while he helped her unpack his little bag.

When I picked him up today, he was sitting on the floor in circle time listening to the teacher read a book.  I had never seem him sit so quietly or still before for that long.  It was adorable!  I stood there for 15 minutes before I went in just because I loved watching him!  They said he had a “super” day.  He didn’t cry as much as he has the past two days and wasn’t even too clingy to the teachers.  They go through different activity stations throughout the day and for the first time Bean did them all on his own without having to have somebody hold him.  The only times he would start to cry were either when another child started crying (what a sweet, empathetic little love he is!) or when they changed activity stations.  But they said that was completely normal and would probably continue to happen until he gets used to the routine of the class.  Overall though he was in a great mood, he slept like a big boy on his cot for an hour and 45 minutes, and he ate all his lunch and snacks.

Poor little guy has cried so much in the past two days that he is going hoarse in his little throat, though Chris doesn’t think his voice is cracking because of crying.

“Maybe he’s just becoming a man…” he said.

I think puberty might be a stretch at this point, so I’m going to go with the crying at daycare thing.  That’s why I am so glad that he seems to be doing better and better each day.  Hopefully we’ll get to the point soon where there aren’t any tears throughout the day.  I’m ready to have that Beaner back.

Because Bean’s days are a little more stressful for him right now with all this change, we try to make sure that he’s getting some good, solid fun when he comes home in the evenings.  And tonight that meant rolling around in the backyard with Daddy and the dogs.  Nothing like a little Daddy time to make you forget about a hard day…
