A Bean and His Dog

When we rescued Molly from a shelter almost two years ago, we thought she’d be a perfect friend for our little dog, Lucy.   But Lucy didn’t want a friend.   She was an independent woman.

That hasn’t really changed over the years.

So, that left Big Molly to her own devices.

Sometimes that meant she got bored and destroyed things.   Sometimes that meant she forgot she was a dog and tried to eat off the dining room table.   But mostly that meant she just waited around for something to happen.

And then one day, something happened.   We brought Beanie home from the hospital.

Molly was curious about the Bean from Day One.   She immediately started sleeping in the nursery with him, right next to his crib.   And when he was awake, Molly wanted to be wherever he was.   At first, she was very cautious.   She seemed to know that Beanie was teeny tiny and so she was just near him at all times.

But the bigger Bean has become, the closer Molly has gotten.

And sometimes she gets a little close.

A little toooo close.

But she can’t help it.

She just loves that Beanie.

I think she likes the way he smells.   Like vanilla.   And poo.   Molly’s two favorite thins.

So, Molly just follows the Bean now from room to room, toy to toy, activity to activity, playing right along beside him.

It used to bother me that Molly got so close to the baby.   She was always leaving him covered in dog hair.   And her kisses were like a bath for the Bean.

But then I see the two of them together.   I see how gentle Big Molly is with Beanie.   I picture them in a few years.   Beanie and Molly.   Finding frogs and hunting worms in the backyard.   And I think to myself, “How bad can dog hair really be?”

So, its okay with me if Molly likes to be close to Beanie.   I think Beanie likes being close to Big Molly, too.

(Psst…Too close, Molly.   A little too close…)

That is so precious! I’m sure Molly’s maternal instincts have been kicking in and to be honest, I think it is wonderful that not only will Bean have a built-in playmate, but likely a fierce protector if necessary.

AWW! I had a dog like that when I was a baby too! I would sit in those walker things that have wheels on the bottom and he would follow me wherever I went. If anyone came near he always had a paw right there on the tray in front of me like it I was his baby or something. Then if anyone got too close for his comfort he would growl. I have a picture of it somewhere. They are going to be such good friends!

Why don’t you tell them more about Dame Lucy and what she’s likely to be doing while Beanie and Molly are hanging out?

Cute post. I think Molly & bean will be the best of friends. We got out golden retreiver pup when my son was a baby – its so cute now to see them playing together. Our dog is never rough or bites or anything. I used to be a little worried about the dog hair but not so much now 🙂

I enjoy reading all about having 2 dogs and a baby. One day we’ll probably have a baby to add to our 2 dog babies and sometimes I worry about dog hair and how crazy they get around the house.

I am the total opposite of dog-lover this side of heaven, but even I think this post is precious. If I could get past the hair, the slobber, and the poopy behind (I just can’t do it!), then maybe things would be different…
But your doggie seems so sweet, and good to your little man. Pretty cute.

we brought our black lab, Kirby, home when he was 8 weeks old, only a month before our son, AJ, was born. i’m surprised i’m still sane! they have definitely grown up together, and AJ knows Kirby’s language better then i do now. they know when they are playing and when they are annoying each other. AJ gives Kirby commands and feeds him breakfast and dinner. Kirby shares his kennel and lets AJ crawl on him. it’s really sweet. i love all the pics on the post, there will be many more to come!!!

This makes me happy! We have a big dog who lives inside with us…he does everything with us…even sleeps right beside us in the bed. I’ve always been a little cautious about “what if” when we have a baby. How will he respond, will he eat baby’s head off, etc. We’re not planning on a baby any time soon, but this makes me happy to see such love. I hope our Bailey will love the little baby just like Molly loves Bean.

We are dog people. Our dog was our first born baby. . . And we love other people who let their dogs love on their babies! Such a wonderful way for children to learn about compassion and unconditional love!
Plus, look at how darn cute they are together. So glad you had the Bean for her!
