Birthday Presents, Part Two

Last week I posted on some of the birthday presents Bean got so that you can see what he’s playing with these days.  At the video chat this week someone reminded me that I hadn’t done the second part of his gifts and so I thought I’d follow up with that today.

Bean’s Grandmomma Jackie gave him a set of the big, oversized Legos.  I wasn’t sure he’d know what to do with them yet, but he definitely understands.  He needs Chris and I to sit with him and help put them together, but he hands you the pieces that he wants you to build for him.  He really likes when we build cars.

He also got a lot of books from his Aunt Annie.  Annie is so great because she always gives the classic books as presents to Bean.  For Christmas she gave him a set of books from when she and Chris were little.  They even had their names written in the front in scribbly handwriting – so cute!  For his birthday, she gave him new copies of all her old favorites, which is great because they were some of my favorites growing up, too!

My Dad gave Bean this Little Tykes Hauler Pop Truck.  I hadn’t seen this one yet and I think it’s a perfect toy for Bean’s age.  It has little balls in the back and when you roll the truck, those balls pop.  It makes a lot of noise, but it’s become one of Bean’s daily favorites.  He also likes it because it’s big enough for him to maneuver himself.  And I like it because he has thrown it around for days and it doesn’t even have a scratch on it.  That’s one tough little truck!

Grandmomma Jackie also gave Bean a few good books.  Jackie always gives Bean books that do something – sing, talk, move, pop up.  His favorite that she’s given him was a book about the different oceans in the world and each ocean scene pops up with these brightly colored fish and plays sounds from that ocean.  It’s pretty cool.  For his birthday she gave him a lighthouse book whose light at the top flashes and it plays music.  It’s called Let Your Light Shine.

And she also gave him this book that she put pictures of her and Bean into.  And then it recorded Jackie reading the story to Bean.  So every night we play the book and it’s like Grandmomma is reading to Bean.  It is so sweet!  It’s called What a Day It Will Be. (I can’t find a link for this anywhere online!!)

But maybe Bean’s favorite present he got was one of the cheapest.  Have you see those small, rubber Cars trucks in stores?  They are $4.99 at Target.  Well, Bean had two of them and he drives them all over our house.  Grandmomma Jackie came through big time and bought him the WHOLE CARS SET!!!  Bean loves them because they are small but still big enough for him to play with and he likes the bright colors.  I really like them because they are small enough to fit into my diaper bag and to pull out when we’re in a restaurant or something.  Big hit with this gift!

Can you see him making the motor noise in that last picture?

All in all, Bean really racked up on his birthday.  He got a lot of new clothes, too, so now he’s stylin’ while he’s playin’!

What about you?  What are your kids playing with today?

We got some of those little trucks for Nate and he LOVES THEM. He flips them over and spins their wheels. We think he’s trying to figure out how it goes. We bought one for Nate’s friend (who’s a few months younger than Nate) for his goodie bag at Nate’s birthday party, and my husband (who also loves the trucks) had a hard time parting with it. They’re like candy! So fun! Love that you posted these toys – good to see what’s holding Bean’s attention. It’s funny – I haven’t seen many of these in our stores so I wonder if toy distribution has a slightly regional slant? Bean – beep, beep!

Tell Aunt Annie to get Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm for Bean’s next classic book. I know I mentioned it on another post, but I’ll say it again! It will become one of your favorites, I promise. (Bean’s too!)

As I have no kids, it seems only appropriate to share what I’m playing with today: the washing machine, my laptop, my camera, chocolate sauce, hangers, wedding lists (for my best friend), the television.

Oh unemployment, you allow me to accomplish so much.

If only you paid me for it.

Love You Forever has ALWAYS made my mom and I cry uncontrollably.

I remember her reading to me when I was little, and she would start crying, so I would have to take over. A few pages later, I would start crying! We could never get through the book without tears in our eyes.

I bought her a copy of the book a few years ago for Mother’s Day and wrote inside, “I’m sorry for making you cry…” and she loved it.

Seconded! I noticed it and immediately started thinking about how sad that book is (and lovely!) There was another one I used to read when I was a kid called “I’ll Always Love You” about a little boy and his dog, who grows from a puppy to adult dog, then elderly, and eventually dies. I think it was meant to teach little kids about death and pets, but oh man. Just thinking about it still gets me choked up!

He looks so big in these pictures! And I totally remember the motor noises. It amazed me after having 2 girls how different my boy child was – nobody taught him to make those noises, or to dismantle his sisters’ doll stroller…

If he didn’t get “Cars and Trucks and Things that Go” by Richard Scarry, he would totally love it. There is a tiny little “gold bug” on each page, and they have so much fun finding him. I especially love the crazy cars that he makes up – like the pickle car.

    You can find it here!

Bubba got two sets of those little “Chuck Trucks” for his first birthday. He ignored them for a month and a half, then one day they were the only toys he wanted to play with. They were his favorites for about four months, until his Godfather gave him a bunch of Hot Wheels!

Lucky Bean! He got some great presents. My son is playing with his Duplo (the big lego blocks like Bean has), also his cars & trucks & tearing around the house on his bike! Im getting my son some more Duplo blocks for his birthday in August – he will be 3. They are unbreakable and he plays with them on most days. Ill have to go look for the post on part 1 of Beans birthday presents as i must have missed it!

    2 things:

Good luck ever reading the book I Love You Forever and not crying. I cry every stinkin time! Okay, so no tears, but all weepy for sure!

My Jack LOVES his little trash truck from that set of cars (it’s the only one we have). He calls it “tash!” He runs it on every windowsill in the house. 🙂

Oh my goodness the oversized legos. Bean is so LUCKY. My brothers and I LOVED those. We much preferred those to normal sized legos (are they duplos? or something? I remember them being called something like that). Just watch out if bean has siblings and there aren’t an even number of pieces. Oh the fights over the long pieces (5 of them, 3 kids, not good, not good).

Looks like Bean had a GREAT Birthday.
