Pop Some Popcorn – It’s Vacay Pictures!
This past weekend, our whole family met in Tybee Island, Georgia, for a long weekend at the beach. My parents rented a beautiful condo for us and we all brought food and drinks and settled in for a weekend of relaxing, chatting, and a lot of fun. With Chris and I getting ready to close on our house THIS WEEK (cross your fingers, toes, and eyeballs, please!), we were in full-on decorating mode and so we instantly focused on how beautiful and doable this house’s style was. It was exactly how we envisioned our new house being decorated and so we walked around for the first hour we were there taking notes on paint, furniture, textiles, and patterns.
This is the living room on the main floor. In the first picture that’s me, my Dad, and Bean hanging out right after we arrived.
From that living room, you look down this long hallway area that opens out onto the porch. Inside, there’s a wet bar just before you enter the kitchen and dining rooms.
The kitchen was open and big and wonderful for gatherings with large families. We hung out in there a lot. This is my Mom making homemade peach ice cream. Yummm…. And that’s Bean waiting for scraps.
This is the dining room, which we did not use the whole time. Dining room tables in my family are for holding stuff – bags, toys, mail, etc. We are couch eatin’, porch sittin’ folk.
The bedrooms were so pretty, too. My mom and dad very generously gave Chris, me, and the kids the master bedroom, which was awesome. It gave us room to spread out with all of our stuff. Bean Man was super excited because we bought him his first sleeping bag (with Buzz Lightyear on it, of course). We actually put him in the closet! Don’t judge! We left the doors open and put blankets and pillows down on the floor with his sleeping bag on top. It wasn’t even like a closet then. It was more like an alcove with his sleeping bag in it. He thought it was the coolest thing ever. Then, we put Gracie’s pack and play in an actual alcove in the bedroom, close to our bed.
Although, every morning we somehow woke up with all four of us in our bed. I have a new appreciation for king size beds these days.
There were two other bedrooms in the condo. My sister and JM had the queen sized bedroom and my parents (who, may I remind you, paid for the house) took the room with the two twin sized beds. My parents are such great hosts, even when they aren’t hosting in their own house!
Bean’s favorite part of the house was the elevator. That’s right. An elevator. It went from the ground level where the cars were parked in the garage up to the third floor with the bedrooms. I thought it was kind of excessive, really. I mean, the house wasn’t that big. But it made moving our suitcases all the way to the third floor a lot easier.
Equally as cool as the elevator to Bean were the stairs. He’s not allowed on stairs without me and Chris normally, so the idea that now there were stairs IN THE HOUSE was too much for him. He went up and down and up and down and up and down all weekend long.
My parents got to town the night before anyone arrived and then we showed up on Friday afternoon. My sister and John Michael couldn’t get out of town until late on Friday, so Friday afternoon, we hung out and played around the condo. It was a great way to start our fun weekend!
We went to dinner that night to a place called The Crab Shack. It was along this bayou and marsh area and basically looked like 10 or 11 giant decks with tables on them.
Our table was right on the water with such a beautiful view. A perfect way to start our vacation weekend.
What I loved the most about this place was that there was so much to do there. Bean loved the stray cats that sniffed around from table to table, looking for fish scraps. Chris loved the alligators that you could feed.
It was just a fun place to hang out with your family!
Check back tomorrow for Day Two of our weekend vacay! Don’t forget your popcorn!

That place look incredible! I love the way they decorated too! I wonder if I can steal any of these ideas…especially those two lamps. Are you in love with the lamps?

Tybee is a lot of fun! When Hubby and I first got married we lived in Savannah. We are Gulf Coasters like you, and total beach bums… needless to say we spent most of our free time on Tybee and on Little Tybee. Glad you had fun! Can’t wait to see what you did on Day 2!

Sounds like a fantastic start to your vacation! I’m jealous that you are so close to Savannah…it’s one of our very favorite cities. Enjoy! 🙂

Looks like a great vacation. Very jealous of all the family time together in Savannah!

The last pictures with Bean and the alligator made me laugh, my son always says let’s go in the alligator…he wants to ride in the elevator!

Oh my goodness, I had to laugh when you said where Bean slept! My kids ~still~ talk about the vacation we took when they slept in the closet…sounds terrible, but they loved it 😀 Glad you all had a wonderful time!

We put our daughter in the closet too! It was huge so like you said, it was an alcove. Looks like a fun time!

Oh man!! Matt and I lived in Savannah for 3 years while we finished up school. We LOVE Tybee. The Crab Shack is where we went for one of our first dates! I can’t wait to see what else y’all did!

Wow, the house looked really nice, and you guys looked like you had a blast. And weren’t closets made for kids? Just kidding, but really not a bad idea.
Sandy
you mean it isn’t normal to have your kids sleep in the closet on vacation? shh, don’t tell my son!

Hi Katie! I just got back from that area last night! We also had dinner at the Crab Shack and it was our favorite place out of a 2 week vacation to Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach and Asheville. Good eats and so entertaining for my 2 year old son!

I used to live in Hilton Head Island with my ex (ha!) and I worked in Savannah. We used to go to Tybee all the time, but we never ate at the crab shack. If I can ever convince my husband to go on vacation there, (live in Oklahoma..boo!) I must go check it out! Glad you guys had a good time!

Your parents ROCK!!! Such sweethearts! LOVE the pictures. LOVE the vacation house. Can’t wait to see more. How’s Ginny?

I love Tybee Island! Is that near the north end or the south end of the island? We typically stay near the south end (by Little Tybee) the whole time. There is a Pizza place that is DELICIOUS near the big boardwalk.

__ LOVE THAT___ I’ve always felt crappy for not utilizing my dining room table for eating.

Thanks for sharing. Everybody looks so happy!

I’m one of those silly people who reads your blog just ’cause I think you’re funny (and an amazing writer!), instead of actually having kids of my own or much else in common with you, really…
Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say for my first comment that The Crab Shack holds a special place in my heart, and I’m so glad you were able to enjoy it with your family! My now-fiance took me there for our first date, way back when we were students in Atlanta. He asked me out to dinner, wondered if I liked seafood, and then told me the BEST seafood was about 4 hours away. We’ve been back many times since then!

Here in landlocked KS I drool over anything that has to do with the sea, fresh seafood, etc. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your vacation. Suzanne

Ooh! The hubby and I went to Savannah and Tybee in April for our one year anniversary. I loved climbing the lighthouse there. The view from the top was gorgeous!
