Preparing to Become a SAHM
Things are winding down at school for me. And as the end of the year draws closer, I realize that summer vacation is drawing closer as well. It’s all I can think about. I can’t wait to sleep in a little, go grocery shopping on a Tuesday morning (instead of throwing dirty looks and elbows in the Sunday after church crowd), put lemons in my hair and lay out by the pool. Summer is glorious for teachers, and any teacher who denies that is either doing it wrong or lying to your face.
One thing that I did NOT think about in my summer daydreams was the fact that I would have two children with me all summer. Not quite sure how that slipped my mind, but it just did not register in my margarita-hazed thoughts. When it finally dawned on me that I would have two kids home with me this summer, I can’t lie. My first thought was, “FUUUUUUUUUUDDDDGGGGEEEEE!” which was quickly followed by, “HOW WILL WE ALL SURVIVE?!?!?!” which was quickly followed by, “WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH THEM????? ALLLLL SUMMERRRRR LONGGGGGG????”
But then, last weekend, we had our first family weekend in the pool. Chris has been fighting with that darn pool since we bought the house. First he had to fix the pump, then the timer on the pump, then get it all cleaned, then he got it all fixed and ready and a cold snap came. So, he spent the next week keeping it clean so that when it was warm enough, we could all get in. And then we went out of town. Two weekends in a row. And that sent the pool into a downward spiral. He has spent the past two weeks getting it back to swimming shape and just last weekend it was time for the inaugural swim.
AND IT WAS AWESOME!
We spent the entire weekend outside, either in the pool or the yard. The kids had a blast, Chris and I had a blast, the dogs had a blast. It was just a really great time. And then I remembered how much we were in the pool last summer. How tan Bean and I got. How much we both loved swimming. And now, I’m excited about summer all over again!
I’m co-chair of my church’s vacation Bible school this year, so Bean will be doing that for one week, and he’s doing a summer camp at the theater where Chris works for a week, both Bean and Gracie are taking swimming lessons at the local Y, and we’re traveling some, too. It should be a busy, full summer and I can’t wait!

And this is the time of year that I become jealous of my teacher friends (definitely NOT during testing season, though). And that last picture of you and Gracie makes me miss slobbery, open-mouthed baby kisses so very much!

Wonderful! It’s finally dawning on my husband (a professor) and me (an adjunct instructor) that SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE! So this post makes me excited. We went for a lovely walk by the lake this evening, and this week we don’t have to do any lectures! Just grade papers and write! Yay!! We don’t have a pool, but we do have a cottage to go to on the beach on Lake Huron:-B

I love that you say they are doing it wrong or lying LOL!! That is the one complaint I hate teachers throw around “Oh but you don’t know how hard it is.” UM ‘scuze me? I get paid the same as you and I only get 5 days off a year. Y’all get a SUMMER (and holidays and spring) break. 😉 Your job is so darn hard and inspiring, but …. you still get summer vacation. Also, y’all look so happy in that pool, Bean’s face down look is cute!

You’ll nail the SAHM thing again 😉 Do you belong to any of the local FB mom groups? They’re a great way to find out about multi-age playdates in Orlando. I have heard meetup is good, but I haven’t used it. If all else fails, the library story times are always awesome and lots of teachers like you seem to pop up there during the summers. Have fun!

Good luck keeping the kiddos busy but definitely enjoy the summer!

I was gonna say – I seem to remember being jealous of you lounging and enjoying a lot of pool time last summer – when you had an infant and a toddler – and doing just fine (I’m glad you remember it now, too!). I’m sure it’ll be hectic, but I’m looking forward to relaxing vicariously through you this summer. Good luck getting through the last few weeks of school, first, and then onward to the pool time!!!

That is the same reason I love being a tax accountant. After tax season I only work 2 days a week until the next tax season starts.

By the time August rolls around you’ll be wondering where the time went and thinking of all the things you meant to do that you couldn’t fit in. 🙂

It is a glorious perk of being a teacher, although summer always goes much too quickly. Only 11 more school days until summer begins for this teacher! I hope your summer with your own kiddos is truly wonderful!

I’ve been teaching for seven years and still haven’t figured out that whole summer “vacation” thing – somehow I always end up teaching a summer class, signing up for a workshop or participating in a curriculum planning group. This summer, I’m doing all three. I think I am so terrified of being a SAHM, I find a way to work through my summers! That way, my husband stays home as Mr. Mom while I go off to work.

Pool! Jealous. You did great last summer! Also, love that you forgot you had kids all summer too, I can totally see me doing that. Lol.

I am super jealous that you get the summer off with your babes! I would love to do that…. It sounds like you have a ton of great stuff planned and that pool will definitely be a godsend for the summer! Oh, and my daughter is doing the open mouth kiss, too. Its the most adorable thing everrrr Cabin Fever in Vermont
