Mom of the Year

Tonight was Halloween.

Bet you’re wondering why Bean’s not wearing his Buzz Lightyear costume.

Let me tell you why…

We invited Bean’s best little friend, Elle, over for dinner and trick or treating. So, I had to leave work, get to the kids Halloween party at their daycare, get home, dinner cooked, and two kids into costumes all within a two hour period. I was running around like a crazy woman.

But I got home and everything was ready to go by the time company showed up. We had a great dinner, and the kids were rearing to put on their costumes. Finally, it was time. I put Gracie into hers, Elle got into hers, and it was Bean’s turn to get dressed. Only, I couldn’t find his costume anywhere. I looked in all his normal hiding spots. I checked through the 10,000 bags and totes I had carried around all day. I looked all over my car. And nothing. Nada. Zip.

Where was Buzz?????

And that’s when the cold panic of certainty set in. I knew where the costume was. I just knew.

It was in Bean’s cubby at school.

They had a costume party and parade at school, and I’d sent him to school in his costume. But he had changed out of his costume after the parade and the costumes were put in their cubbies. And I had not checked his cubby that day.  And the daycare had closed an hour ago.

Cold panic. Cold panic. Cold panic.

I came downstairs and told my mom and Chris what had happened, and the blank stares and crickets chirping told me that this was my burden to bear. I had to tell Bean… by myself.

Thankfully, Bean is about the easiest going kid in the universe. When I suggested that he wear his dinosaur costume from last year, he perked up and squealed, “YEAH! I love dinosaurs!”

Whew!

Costume drama aside, we had a great time trick or treating tonight. The kids were awesome! And it was way more fun going at this age than in the last two years when we had to really do everything for the kids. This year, the kids marched themselves right up, rang doorbells, said trick or treat, and collected their loot. It was super easy for me and Chris. We did take turns helping Gracie, though. At the first few houses, we walked up with her and helped her hold her pumpkin. But by the fifth or sixth house, she was like, “I got this…” and she just marched her sassy stinger up there by herself with the big kids.

We had a great time and proved once again that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent.

At least, I hope not. Because if perfection is the standard, then I am in a mess of trouble…
