A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

First of all, let me thank you for the outpouring of support yesterday!  You all made me feel much better and gave me some confidence about stepping up for my kids.  In answer to a lot of your comments, I received an email last night from the principal thanking me profusely for my email and asking for a description of the staff member so that the incident would not be repeated with other children.  I am really glad Bean is attending this school and I know that this is not…

Happiness and the Rearview Mirror

Ever since Chris started graduate school at Yale, I’ve had this sticker on the back of my car. It’s a simple sticker that says, “Yale University.” At first, it was a badge of honor because I thought it was so cool to actually know someone who went to Yale. After the novelty of the school wore off, I kept it on my car because I was so proud of Chris for what he had accomplished. When he graduated and started working in New York, we kept our connection to Yale…

Thank Full

I am thankful for the home that we live in and for the lives that we will build here. I am thankful for a job that makes me smile every day and for the middle schoolers who allow me to be part of their world for a little while. I am thankful for a church that teaches about the power of prayer, the importance of family, and the strength of faith. I am thankful for friendships that make me a better person. I am thankful for the readers who come…

Tomorrow is Going to Be a Great Day

Tomorrow will be a great day. No. Tomorrow will be a FANTASTIC DAY. Because tomorrow, these boys will be in my house. I’ve missed them in my house. I’ve missed them at my kitchen table. I’ve missed them making plans to show up at our house on a Friday, but then showing up on Thursday night…or afternoon…or morning… I’ve missed them on my back deck after dinner, drinking beer, and talking about nothing until the wee small hours of the morning. I’ve missed them stealing my camera and taking pictures…

Autumn in Orlando

It’s no secret that I had a rough time adjusting to our move back to Florida from Connecticut. But if you were to ask me now how I am doing, I would be able to tell you with 100% confidence that I feel like I am home. I feel like I have planted roots here and I’m happy to grow now. I have done bloomed where I done been planted. Except for one thing. Autumn. (sigh) I just cannot get my head around autumn in Florida. It’s hot here. I…

We Are There

During one of the busiest points of grad school at Yale for Chris, he came home one night to find a hearty, home cooked meal: Chinese take out. We ate at our tiny kitchen table together while he told me about how stressful grad school was, about how he wasn’t sure he could make it through, and about how sometimes he just wanted to give up. I sat with him, listening, holding his hand, and trying to find the right words to help him through, but in the end, it…

Before/After

I didn’t want to post pictures of the new house until everything was just perfect, but then I looked around and realized that that may not be for YEARS. So, I grabbed my camera and happily snapped away. LIVING ROOM – BEFORE LIVING ROOM – AFTER In the living room we stripped the wallpaper and sanded and painted the walls.  We also pulled up the old carpet and re-carpeted.  We took down the window treatments, but we still need to decide on new curtains.  (Ignore the laundry on the couch…

Losing My Mind

I am losing my mind. Seriously. I’m going insane. I’ve heard of mommy brain or whatever you want to call it and I experienced it slightly with Bean.  I’d forget where I put my keys periodically.  One time I seriously forgot where I parked my car and had to call Chris to come get me.  (Low point.)  But mommy brain or whatever you want to call it with two kids?  It’s pretty brutal.  As proof, I submit the following true stories into evidence: Exhibit A: Two weeks ago, I stopped…

I’m Baaaaaaack!

Oh, imaginary friends! I have missed you so! For those of you who don’t follow me on Twitter or Facebook (…cough, cough…shame on you…cough, cough…), let me tell you what I’ve been up to in the past week. First, we spent last week packing up the old house and getting ready to move into our new one. I packed with the kids while Chris and my saint of a father peeled wallpaper and painted at the new house. Occasionally, I’d haul the kids over to bring them beer and Five…

Hump Day Musings

I have sat down to blog for three days now and been stumped. You know in cartoons when a bunch of people try to fit through a doorway, but they all get stuck because they try to go through at the same time? Well, that’s been my brain lately. There is just so much stuff going on that when I sit down to try and let some of it out, it all gets bottled up and nothing comes. So today, I thought I’d just let it all out a little…
