Thank Heavens For Little Boys
IT’S A BOY! IT’S A BOY! IT’S A BOY!
I WAS RIGHT! I WAS RIGHT! I WAS RIGHT!
HE’S HEALTHY! HE’S HEALTHY! HE’S HEALTHY!
Though that pretty much sums it up, I should probably provide some details here. My doctor and our genetic counselor called me yesterday to tell me that genetic testing confirmed we are having a little boy! And the best news of all is that he is 100% healthy!!!!! I did pass the Fragile X gene on to him, but it didn’t mutate very far at all so he will be healthy and, of course, happy!
Hang on a second while I climb into my pulpit…
I don’t believe in just praying when the times are tough (though that is what brings many people to God). I believe it is equally important, if not more important, to thank the Good Lord when prayers are answered. So, if you’re the prayin’ kind, throw a little “shout out” up there in praise and thanks for our healthy baby boy. All of us are made in God’s image, and I am so thankful that God saw a healthy baby for our family. And while we’ve all got our fancy church panties on, lets pray for those who have a very different conversation with their doctors. It could have gone terribly differently in about 2 seconds for us, and I can’t imagine what someone would feel like to receive that phone call.
Okay, I’m coming down from the pulpit…
My favorite part was that he was healthy. My second favorite part was that he was a boy (cause that means I may actually have something resembling intuition, which is just the coolest Mom tool ever). My third favorite part was telling Chris. They actually told me the sex a day before they called with the Fragile X results. I went in for a doctor’s appointment and they were able to show me the little *you know* on my ultrasound. Chris was at work, so he didn’t get to be there. But I took the picture home with me and was actually excited that I’d get to be the one to tell him.
I stopped by Babies R Us and picked up a blue bib that said, “Messy Man, Just Like Daddy” on it. I wrapped it up and when I got home, I sat Chris down and made him open it. He just kind of looked at it for a minute, then looked up at me.
“The doctor told me today,” I said.
And then, I swear, I think the sun shined from inside Chris’ head. In 10 years, I have never seen him smile like this. It was almost like the smile he had on our wedding day, but without the nerves. It was just pure and big. He sat there for just a second and then said quietly, “I wanted a boy.”
If I hadn’t been so excited myself, I would have cried. Or jumped his bones.
We immediately called our family, and then we went out to dinner and talked about names the entire time. And Chris led the conversation! He had opinions (actual opinions, not just opinions in opposition of mine), he had thoughts (actual thoughts, not just thoughts in opposition of mine), and he didn’t mention Charlie Brown ONCE!
We have a name in mind that we are about 90% sold on right now (TBA later, I’m sure), and we spent the night randomly testing out the name in conversations. Like, Chris would suddenly shout in the middle of a conversation,
“So-and-so, pick up your toys!” or
“So-and-so, get out of the beer fridge!” or
“So-and-so, is that a girl in your bedroom?!?!”
After each he would declare, “Yeah, that sounds good.”
I’m excited its a boy because I’m going to make him a momma’s boy for life. I’ve already decided. He’s going to love sweater vests and he’s going to write thank you notes and he’s going to hold the door open for girls and he’s going to learn to dance and he’s going to learn to change a tire and he’s going to learn to read novels and we’re going to talk about them at the dinner table and he’s going to learn to shine his shoes and he’s going to keep his room clean and at Christmas he’s always going to insist on giving me one present on Christmas Eve because he just can’t wait.
He’ll be the husband I never had.

ok, ok…. you had me until that last paragraph when you made him sound like a sissy…. we will not have a sissy momma’s boy… not on my watch… and IF you had a husband like that you would die… you need a real man to control your bad habits 🙂 but i love you just the same.
